The NATO Phonetic Alphabet is a spelling alphabet (also known as telephone alphabet, radio alphabet, word-spelling alphabet, or voice procedure alphabet).
The 26 code words in the NATO phonetic alphabet are assigned to the 26 letters of the English alphabet in alphabetical order as follows: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

As a travel agent, I use this alphabet on a daily basis to communicate with hotels and other agencies. It is not that difficult to learn
Really a good communication tool used in aviation to avoid confusion when spelling out words.

I use this to spell out my maiden name to people. it's only 14 letters, but it can take up to 2 minutes for the other person to get it. so, yes, it is helpful for both parties.
