I loved the Adventure Island series, one of the toughest games to beat was the 1st one. I did know about the Monster Series, but I never knew there was 4th title. Thanks for your thorough investigative research!
One weird thing about Monster Lair/Dragon's Curse (The US Localizations of the 2 Wonder Boy 3s) is that they both had totally different names for the hero, but Monster Lair's manual calls WB "Adam" and Dragon's Curse's calls him "HU-MAN" - while the first is probably a random name and the latter is probably playing off of Hu-Cards, the unintentional connection to He-Man across both is pretty funny.
I have no idea why I've played this, but I have. I found it just after playing Adventure Island 3 and 1, and found it a big departure from those two, unsurprisingly. I couldn't even get out of the first few screens!
Anime Bug-tte Honey's intro was allegedly sung by Takahashi himself. What a chad. Hudson didn't get its own Yoshi counterpart only on Adventure Island, but also on Bomberman in a form of sentient kangaroos Louies. However it seems the developers intentionally forgot the team of kangaroos as it might have been hectic for players to keep up with all the stuff they already have to worry about in 4+ player PvP arena. They didn't exactly help balancing out the games either.
I had absolutely no idea there was an adventure island IV it makes super adventure island II seem like less of a bizarre choice. Can’t wait to try this one out. I like the adventure island series. They’re fun games with good graphics and interesting environments
I find interesting how Master Higgins' sprite becomes cuter with each game, less like Ron Jeremy (his weird lip always looked more like mustache to me) in a Flintstones parody and closely to cutesy kid heroes like Mega Man, Little Nemo or Little Samson
I remember discovering the fan translated version and being enthralled with it. I was never the biggest AI fan, but I loved the metroidvania aspects this game had.
I think there's an error at around 3:20. The Dynastic Hero is a re-skin of Wonder Boy in Monster World, not Dragon's Trap...but with a list of series releases so fractured, who can even be sure.
Man, just when I thought I finally had a handle on the convoluted history of Wonder Boy/Adventure Island you go and mention spinoffs and anime adaptations. I was not ready for this rabbit hole to get any deeper.
Also prior to New Adventure Island, the PC Engine got Adventure Island - which was Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. Mega convoluted series but it is what it is.
to Miyamoto's credit, I doubt Yoshi could have been pulled off on the stock famicom hardware available at the time of super mario bros.' development in 1985. Gonna need some mapper chips for that one
I would love to see an Adventure Island Anniversary Collection along the lines of the Contra and Castlevania ones on modern platforms. Konami did use that as an opportunity to officially localize the NES version of Kid Dracula, and localizing formerly Japan-only games does seem to be something of a minor trend in the last few years, so I'm hopeful
I didn't play much adventure island that much as a kid not until the Wii virtual console. Which I downloaded the turbo gfx 16 version. And couldn't put it down. Went out and bought all the US versions I could find. For pretty cheap too. Gotta realized this was what? 07. And the retro boom was starting to go up in price for old games.
The New Adventure Island soundtrack slaps. I love the PC-Engine/Turbografx soundchip. It's so instantly recognizable. Nothing sounds quite like it, and it sounds less muffled than the SNES soundchip, and beefier and less scratchy than the Mega Drive one. It's probably my favorite console soundchip from before we got access to redbook audio.
I had never heard of this one before and now I'm glad I have. What a fascinating little game; it's good Hudson took their chance at one last hurrah for Famicom before sailing off into the sunset, so to speak. I really like how the game seems to give particular attention to animation frames for Master Higgins crouching. On a system where every couple bytes you can scrounge up count, even considering highly advanced mappers, it's neat to see them put some extra oomph into something so small.
Wait... Bug tte Honey combines Adventure Island gameplay with a cool-ass-lookin' Arkanoid-style game and some kind of flying game, and you're theorizing it DISCOURAGED Hudson from pursuing the Takahashi Meijin games any further?! I wanna hear more about Bug tte Honey -- that game looks frigging awesome! ;)
Great work as always. And you're right, Wonder Boy was inspired by Super Mario Bros. Ryuichi Nishizawa has previously said the original game was an attempt to make a better platformer after playing Super Mario Bros. on Famicom.
Oh man, I totally forgot about Adventure Island 2. My cousins had that game back in the day, and I never got very far. Nice to remember the game and get some history on that rideable dinosaur.
At least the Famicom went out on a high note rather than something like a yearly sports game series limping along and updating stats. Also, I think it's wise to ignore the early 2000s attempts to reboot the series.

Super Adventure Island 2 on the SNES was how I learned the word 'delete' when I was 6 years old, as I chose it on my friend's cartridge he had loaned me with full completion and some kind of special gold armor. Forgot the name of the game for a decade or two afterward then found it in some nostalgia thread on some forum.... now I wince for my former friend every time I see that title
I never even knew they had made an adventure island 4, I always assumed the series stopped at 3 and then made its way to snes. Still at least the game itself is easy to play through emulation and its definitely something I should try myself. I remember being a big fan of adventure island II and as a kid I use to rent that game as many times as possible when I went on my summer holiday. Strangely enough the original adventure island and adventure island II have been the only nes games that I've actually played from the series.
Man, Higgins & Tina are so CUTE in IV. What a glow-up. The smaller character sprites are somehow more detailed. (maybe it's just the outline making them look smaller)
I hadn't considered how late the AI sequels really arrived. It's easy to look at games from two different console generations and assume one is the newer than the other, but that isn't always the case. (And if you look at the palm trees in AI3, they _very much_ look inspired by Sonic, lol)
A slight correction. PC Engine Dynastic Hero was a port of Wonder Boy In Monster World, Wonder Boy 3 the Dragons Trap was rebranded as Adventure Island for PC Engine, and Dragons Curse for the US TurboGrafx. It gets very confusing just with the naming scheme.
I suppose the only reason why Konami hasn't done a port or remake to modern consoles is that they'd have to outsource it. An unexpected patron request but an extremely fitting one.
They have been using M2 for their recent classic game collections, so finding someone to do it isn’t a issue. They just need to make the executive decision to do it.

What makes it extra confusing is that the next game in the series is Monster World IV (but it would be Wonder Boy VI 😄🤦♀️)

I found out about Bugtte Honey a few years ago and sought out a couple of episodes. It is much like a Japanese version of Captain N.

Watching Adventure Island IV reminded me of Tomba in a handful of ways. I wonder if Fujiwara was influenced by it in some way.
