The first time I sang this was in July 1972, the night I publicly accepted Christ as my Saviour at Duke Street Baptist Church, in Richmond, Surrey. A friend was being baptised that night. I was in the front row of the balcony, the next thing I knew I was at the front of the church, weeping and singing this hymn I'd never heard before. A few weeks later I was also baptised. I had fought against salvation for several years. The first person to witness to me was a Salvationist euphonium player, Wendy Boon.

I've lost count of the times I've played this in many army bands. I've never once been able to play it without coming under conviction.
