If the MLS thinks they can compete for viewership for the majority of their season with NFL, NBA, NHL, and the big euro leagues (especially the Premier League), they need to get a leadership. MLS gets a lot of their viewership because for the majority of the season (in warmer temps) they only compete against baseball, and in quite a few of the cities, there is no baseball team.

The last Norwegian Eliteserien regular season ran from Mar 31 to Dec 1. MLS could take a winter break starting in early December then restarting in mid February. Northern teams could go on long road trips until mid March. That being said, I prefer the current schedule.

thats barely a change to the current schedule. Which starts in February and the Playoffs end in December.

The weather would be an issue for Canadian and Northern US teams with an Aug-May schedule they'll probably need long road trips in the winter, once the calender hits March then that'll be where the long stretch of home games is....the cold in the Champions Cup vs Mexican sides can be a massive advantage for the Canadian teams, I remember Arsenal playing Spartak Moscow in Moscow in December years ago, it was apparently stupidly cold, the Arsenal players on TV were visibly feeling it, Spartak looked fine, Spartak won 4-1, Canadian teams would have a similar advantage

A winter schedule will kill the Canadian teams in MLS and there will never be any others that could ever join it!! Soccer in Canada has to operate the way it does in countries like Sweden, Finland and Russia. The problem of course, will be that such a Canadian league will be a development league where players will leave to make their big bucks in other leagues (UK, Germany, Italy, Spain); but that's what they do even now.

Vancouver City Council really screwed over the Whitecaps when they blocked the stadium. Right now we have the lowest revenue in MLS and that is because of the lack of a stadium.

You guys don't know what you are talking about. Jordan Hamilton who couldn't cut it at TFC as as a back up, is one of the CPL's top players in their top team. The CPL could never in a million years generate enough revenue to compete with MLS or be anywhere near its size. A team the quality of TFC's title winning squad could never be assemble in the CPL.
The CPL is a nice little league for smaller towns to have football in this country.. a Metropolitan like Toronto warrants a team that can compete for Concacaf. That's never gonna happen in the CPL. It's a death wish to want us to regress to that level.

MLS doesnt need to focus its planning and growth on 1/10 clubs. They need to focus on the 9/10. Minnesota would be little different than the Canadian team, Chicago as well. The winter break will have to be longer than in most of Europe, but if Russia can use the bi-yearly schedule then so can Canada and USA. It's asinine to argue against it.

The last time the Canadian dollar went low we lost several NHL hockey teams and a basketball team. Its hard for Canadian teams to compete with the lower dollar and less tax advantages. Are cross border leagues still possible!!

Winter season would be awesome but having the NFL and NHL in the way, play from Sept to Nov, go on a winter break from Dec to Feb after Super Bowl weekend & play the MLS Cup in May. Cut the games to 30. Play your conference once (14 games), opposite conference (15 games) and an rivalry week. 12 team playoffs. Maybe even do a neutral site final just promote it the right way.

The MLS has really gotten worse over the years. It was fun to follow in the era after vancouver and montreal joined the league, but it's just a caricature of soccer league at this point. Overexpansion and Apple TV are just the icing on the cake at this point. I have not payed much attention the last 3 years and i care even less today. I think the CPL is more appealing today.
