It's enlightening to see how he matured as a traveler from these early episodes to his last ones with Parts Unknown. Here he comes across as demanding and not at all curious as to why it's so difficult to get a mechoui on demand in a little town with few tourists (as someone who lived in Northern Africa can attest, this is not an on demand kind of thing -- he would have had better luck connecting with a family during the holidays or a celebration like a wedding, when they would have been more than welcoming given typical Berber hospitality.) I think it's emblematic of the process of maturing that one follows as one goes from being a tourist to a traveler, which he clearly was towards the end of his journey. RIP, AB.
It struck me a little like that, too. Though I understand Tony's desire to experience the "real deal," I kept wondering why the show's producers couldn't have made arrangements beforehand to prevent everything from being such a hassle. Honestly, I think if it had been me, I would have been fine with the couscous. Especially upon hearing the slaughtering would have to be done in the ritual way, which is none too pleasant for the animal, to say the least. I guess that is something that would only occur to a soft (hypocritical, considering factory farms) American, who is not the host of a cooking show. Oh, well.
If they knew he was coming and what he wanted they would have sacrificed a young lamb for him. I saw the Bedouins took their live animals with them and sacrificed and cooked them in the desert. Nice fresh meat, not lying in a sack in the desert heat all day, attracting the flies......
Really well said. I was surprised how difficult it was to watch this episode. Everybody was so clearly uncomfortable. It reminded me a little of an episode I saw where he went to the Ozarks or something and kept trying to find someone to feed him squirrel or duck. He eventually just had to cook it himself, and the locals were grossed out. There were like, “man we eat chicken.”
Well said sir. I was thinking the same thing, having no knowledge of North African hospitality and culture, it seemed like he was completely taking everything for granted and super jaded. Kinda a pompous twat if I’m honest. I felt a little embarrassed for him. But I do remember his later episodes of shows like parts unknown and no reservations he spoke often about how he was embarrassed about his earlier visits and how he regretted some of his depictions and attitudes. Undoubtedly this was an episode he was referring to. He definitely gained more empathy as he aged as well as self awareness
“If I got hit by a bus next week a thought that would give me comfort is that I’ve seen the sunset over the Sahara...life has finally lived up to it’s advertising.” RIP
@15:00 "I mean if a utility chef like me ends up sitting in the middle of the Sahara desert, eatin my way around the world, what does it all mean? I mean who woulda guessed? I have done every damn thing wrong my whole life. Musta done something right to end up with this.... how did this happen? This is really beautiful" Man this scene hit me hard. I have had this same feeling in similar places but never heard it articulated like this. Really moved me.
I wonder if he saw so much, experienced so much, felt so much, felt so deeply, saw such intense things and his depression just still made him feel empty inside. Depression is real. If you feel this way, reach out for help. There’s no shame in it, it is a natural thing. I didn’t start watching him until recently and geez, what a loss to the world. His death must have disheartened many far and wide. Rest In Peace Anthony
He really lived a rich and fulfilling life and even though I didn't know him, I loved and still love watching his travels. His smile makes me smile 😆, he was truly great😢. You are truly missed Anthony Bourdain RIP🙏🙏🙏.
Wow ❤ i have never seen anthony bourdain this happy and i saw al lot of videos back in the days.. moste of the artitst from the world live in Morocco this day he should have also emigrated and maybe he would be still happy like in this episode. Rip legend 😊
That was something i used to laugh about with his griping about tourists. He was almost worse cause he wants the real experience but when told what the everyday real experience is he just can't take it and wants what he thinks is what the locals do.
I wish I can watch this again... I saw that back in while that "desert sand pit-cooking lamb or goat"; not the that pit-stove.... but the real authentic style.
I love this...It's enlightening, a dream since I was a child, to experience what Tony Boudain did sat on the desert and saw the sunset/starts...Wow. in the desert like Morocco.. God, I pray I can experience this before the coming of the LORD Jesus. Tony may you RIP
i had a whole roasted lamb on the rotating spit once, took small pieces off with the crispy skin while it was still cooking to taste ,it was amazing exp
Amazing how they got a full on electric lighting rig and a fully stocked bar out there in the middle of the Sahara?……mmmm, so real…..they got “genuine” places like this near Dubai…..lived there 10 years ago
Tony is a beautiful soul and was great in these early episodes.. But this is definitely him before he truly reached his enlightened peak lol... Grumpy, a little bratty, making demands and negative comments about smells right in front of everyone lol
First time I've Tony really frustrated. How many times has he said, "I want a whole roasted Lamb"? No trees, no wash basin, no toilet. Now that is roughing it, hope you come out on top.
That is a Tandoor. AN oven like Indians use. What Tony wanted was a Gulf Arab way of cooking in a trench filled with coals, a goat or fish wrapped in leaves, buried in the coals and sand. Face it, He got the full tourist experience.
I wonder if any of these people he visited actually enjoyed his company. His observations and descriptions are good television but he does seem disconnected from the people around him.

You can rest assured he was robbed I studied with moroccons and if a moroccon drinks alcohol then hes very dangerous coz that's a major no no in their culture and if they are willing to ignore that they can be very ruthless. I had religious moroccon classmates and went over to their modest family homes for free . Extremely hospitable. Had Anthony ran into some decent moroccons he would have eaten for free .

To be fair. Bourdains references of other "cultures" at this point as with most of his career were still western movies about the "other." Still a fan but we shouldnt ignore bourdain still had a rather shallow view of africa and asia at this point.
If you travel and your eating at your hotel or a cruise ship, why the heck are you traveling folks? I don't recall EVER ordering fries/chips, hamburgers etc on my trips. Even in Hawaii I didn't eat North American food. Eat where the locals are lined up. They know the best places. No. Not McDonald's lol Side note- I'm almost 45 and I grew up eating all parts of the animal. I didn't realize it wasn't normal for North Americans to eat Liver, kidneys, tongue, heart etc. The problem is alot of people don't know how to cook them. Older generations just boiled the crap out of everything lol

Abdoul is a very honest man, he makes sure they won’t scam him when buying the sheep , he was really angry about the price

Life finally lives up to the advertising.... what a promo to life from bourdain
There will never be enough AB reruns for me. Love you Tony.
I love you, too. Tony.
I'm a huge fan of Zimmern.
Watched this many times,
But Tony’s charm never fades. Miss you, Tony.

“When Tony gets hungry, something dies!” Miss u my friend!
Anthony Bourdain used food to bridge divides between people and cultures, teaching us all about humanity. There are no more shows like this. RIP.
RIP Tony, we love you and miss you.
He really lived a rich and fulfilling life and even though I didn't know him, I loved and still love watching his travels. His smile makes me smile 😆, he was truly great😢. You are truly missed Anthony Bourdain RIP🙏🙏🙏.
feel the same..I never met Tony but it always made me happy just to know he is part of the same planet. Very sad to understand that's history now.
This was the first episode I saw of Tony and I've been a fan ever since; you are dearly missed!
"I didn't come all the way here to sit in a hotel eating cous cous" so funny
He wanted the aughthentic one...not sitting in a tent.
Wow ❤ i have never seen anthony bourdain this happy and i saw al lot of videos back in the days.. moste of the artitst from the world live in Morocco this day he should have also emigrated and maybe he would be still happy like in this episode. Rip legend 😊
I want someone with IBS to make this culinary tour
I felt that in my gut
That was something i used to laugh about with his griping about tourists. He was almost worse cause he wants the real experience but when told what the everyday real experience is he just can't take it and wants what he thinks is what the locals do.
We miss you tony, i cant imagine what you would be doing during this pandemic lockdown 🤣🤣🤣
So glad i found this, i did not know he had a previous show....Repose en Paix mon Ami.
i might have seen a show or 2 back then but Im glad these are available too. Anthony had such a versatile way of articulating his travel experience.
Amazing!!!
I was in Morocco in 2017 what an amazing place this was so much fun to watch!!!
This episode is such a gem
I wish I can watch this again... I saw that back in while that "desert sand pit-cooking lamb or goat"; not the that pit-stove.... but the real authentic style.
I found Morocco the most exotic place I have experienced on my travels so far.
He looked so happy here. Even in the last scene he cracks a smile 😊
This episode, for me, was one of the best! Bismallah
Just because its in Morocco doesn’t make it the best, he seems so annoyed the whole episode lmao
Is that a made up word from a Queen song?
I love this...It's enlightening, a dream since I was a child, to experience what Tony Boudain did sat on the desert and saw the sunset/starts...Wow. in the desert like Morocco.. God, I pray I can experience this before the coming of the LORD Jesus. Tony may you RIP
Well good news is Jesus is dead.
Bismillah and a Heineken, the Moroccan way. Gotta love Abdul.
Tony's vests are hilarious tourist wear sillyness. I miss him so much.
Rest in peace Anthony Bourdain.
one of the best episodes in his entire career
😂 was thinking the opposite. But maybe you were joking
I was thinking the opposite, he seems annoyed and frustrated the whole episode lol
Love you and miss you Anthony
This is a great adventure. Thanks for the experience :)
Incredible how the middle of nowhere in Morocco is far more interesting than anywhere in America…..and healthier.
The various iteration of his shows has always been hit or miss for me. This episode hit it out of the ballpark.
There is a point for every one where we can not get new huge impressions. He was at that point having done everything.
Lovely to see this content!
Love these episodes, and they always have great music. Does anyone know the music from 5.00 on the clip?
Agreed..to sit in solitude with lovely eats good people to absorb such loveliness.
This episode is such a gem😅
Beautiful episode thanks for the upload
i had a whole roasted lamb on the rotating spit once, took small pieces off with the crispy skin while it was still cooking to taste ,it was amazing exp
happy birthday... we miss u
Ahh Tony. You are missed.
Amazing..
The Great Bourdain!!

Most of us have bad news for any living animals Anthony...lol..so missed!
Never underestimate the willingness of the greedy to throw you under the bus.
I hope Tony found his inner peace. If anyone reading this is contemplating suicide please call the prevention hotline, you matter.

"Life finally lives up to its advertising"
I was invited to eat this in the Sahara in Tunesia. I worked and lived there, a tent hotel but nobody there in Ksar Ghislaine , Fantastic.
Tony is a beautiful soul and was great in these early episodes..
But this is definitely him before he truly reached his enlightened peak lol... Grumpy, a little bratty, making demands and negative comments about smells right in front of everyone lol
His younger years is what made us fall in love with him. Bad boy, cigarette smoking, New York chef🙏🏽
He was apparently a very troubled soul.
@@Margaretv-x8l one thing doesn’t cancel out the other
Life finally lives up to its advertising .
I would not aspire to be Anthony Bourdain but he entertains me all the more!!!!
I would trade places with him in a heartbeat if he was still with us. I think id want to be his friend
Pay per view in France " Save the Cretin" Hillarious
rest in paradise
nice trip when whas this video maket?
it looks like 2001 2003
The mastery of the Baby is the reincarnation of Anthony Bourdain
First time I've Tony really frustrated. How many times has he said, "I want a whole roasted Lamb"? No trees, no wash basin, no toilet. Now that is roughing it, hope you come out on top.
'if tony gets hungry, things died...' sigh, if only you stay hungry tony...
He was killed by the Clintons
So when (and what) do the crew eat on Tony's tours??
The crew eat Tony's leftovers after filming the meal scene. Really!
flintstone -sized portion🤣🤣
I want a whole lamb, cooked in a clay oven like i saw in the movie ....and i want the testicles! HA HA ...
That is a Tandoor. AN oven like Indians use. What Tony wanted was a Gulf Arab way of cooking in a trench filled with coals,
a goat or fish wrapped in leaves, buried in the coals and sand. Face it, He got the full tourist experience.
Eventually he did get the one in the hot coals in one of the middle eastern desert tribes he visited. I can't remember where it was.
@ 10:38 - is he saying $19 or $90?
I heard $90
I heard $490.
Remember dis grate man question why would he think about it he got everything
I´m definitely like Anthony Bourdain, doing the typical tourist activities, spend he hole day at the pool is not my idea of a perfect journey
I wonder if any of these people he visited actually enjoyed his company. His observations and descriptions are good television but he does seem disconnected from the people around him.
6:20 Hahaha when he takes a bite of that yellow thing next to the snickers bars the guy behind the counter smiled like "lol he actually ate it"
TONY
Where in the heck did he find booze in Rissani?
that's a good question
Prohibition has never and will never work. Someone makes hooch, everywhere. Guaranteed.
International hotel such as the one he was at are allowed to sell it to those who aren't from that country or a different religion.

After eating goat testicles, I suppose no one can say he didn't try everything 😆. RIP 🙏
Anyone catch how much the lamb cost?
It was 90 dollars, and Tony just shrugged it off.
Abdul saying the testicles are an aphrodisiac is pretty funny. Poor Tony, alone in the desert, eating an aphrodisiac with men.
The greatest dilettante in the culinary world.
Anthony is my God.
90 or 19 dollars for the sheep? Nevermind I saw the CC 90 bucks. I think they ripped off Tony and ZPZ with that price
19 $ for the whole lamb ?? O.0 are u serious

Why do you suppose he offed himself? Maybe he was diagnosed with some sort of disease and wanted to go out in epic style?
What the new doco just released called RoadRunner. It's all about what lead to his suicide.
I wouldn't call suicide going out in epic style.
This tour guide was terrible! The food looked delicious though.
I like Bourdain but he kinda looks like Jeffery Epstein.
