Thank you MIT for providing this. It's helping me immensely with software design requirements and specifications. I know beggars can't be choosers, but I really wish the audio was clear. It feels like my ears are violated.
ocw.mit.edu/courses/aeronautics-and-astronautics/16-842-fundamentals-of-systems-engineering-fall-2015/lecture-notes/ there are lecture notes for the 1st part of the course, I think that's useful.
In the example of the microwave, the weight was listed as a spec, but what if there's a requirement that states: "The microwave shall weigh a maximum of 45lbs." What category is that now?
On the difference between requirements and specifications: unfortunately, English is a fuzzy language, as you can "specify requirements", therefore i've personally seen a "Requirements Specification" document in the automotive field
This is also an academic exercise. Professor is making distinctions. In business (which are controlled by contracts) these terms can be defined at the beginning of the contract.
Is there a mathematical way to model requirements and specification? Because as is, the current distinction given seems ambiguous. E.g. If I included "The microwave should be made of stainless steel" then I would have a requirement instead of part of a specification as in the example around minute 24. Is there a precise model? Thanks! :)
Two main reasons students aren't recorded: Intellectual Property (IP) and recording setup. 1) IP: Students aren't normally recorded. To record students, their permission must be secured for publication. 2) Most cameras for recording are setup to capture the instructor and the chalk.white boards. Recording students requires extra production work.
I am extremely poor, yet I am the epitome of research and understanding. Teach me Systems Engineering. It is a "Game to Me", because I love, ? Think greater than ignorance? My hint is an Element of?
😂😂😂😂 i before coming here commented that some evil country had implanted a time bomb inside an innocent civilian prisoner that exploded during funereal...and my comment was deleted by this App for violating community guidelines...nice... Anyhow , i am here to wacth this lecture where sound is already annoyingly low☹️
Lecture recordings shall be clear to understand the words of the speaker, including any questions and answers. Thank you MIT. Love this stuff.

Great lecture by Olivier de Weck
camera randomly pointed at a soldier, thank u for ur service lul
Give this guy a raise!
please upload course 1. Systems Engineering Overview and Stakeholder Analysis, thanks.

@@shenyang2007 thank you so much for this link
Love this, but at 13:52 I almost had an heart attack
thank you
Thank you for uploading this to youtube. Very helpful. The audio could be better though...

Requirements. Specs are only known when the product is out.

Subtle evangelism!! 👍❤
Great lecture!
In many Project Technical Specifications I have seen are essentially just requirements. This is spinning me out.
This is also an academic exercise. Professor is making distinctions. In business (which are controlled by contracts) these terms can be defined at the beginning of the contract.
They make new things so for them these are different for businesses where customer are different but products mainly same both are same

It is unambiguous so it is a specification, being precise enough in the given context is another story
Look up Axiomatic Design
55:30 They've done it, right?
I want to watch part 1 of the course...
Sorry, session 1 and 12 were not recorded! To see what we do have, visit the course on MIT OpenCourseWare at ocw.mit.edu/16-842F15.
quite good information,thanks.
Shall -> Must avoids misunderstanding.
YES!!!!!
Lockheed just threw me into a system engineering role. I’m was a manufacturing engineer
Big Difference 🤦♂️
1:33:24 see this time for the solution of the problem.
The camera should focus on the student who is speaking.

Yup that why used the word “should” and not “shall”.

Watching in 2024 - James Webb is launched and operating! for over a year now.

audio almost makes this unwatchable.
IllICITGRYNE my thoughts as well. There’s a difference in volume between mics and it’s huge
Requirement: EPFL shall mute their mic when not in use.

😂😂😂 For Moses, shall covert to goal, but for DOD, NASA it is shall. 😂😂😂

Are you serious when you say that people are not well medically and professionally trained in Africa
That was not what he said … he said “may” not be … just as training could be not as extensive in rural areas of any major industrial country.
MIT: So incompetent they can't record clean audio.
Hey MIT u need quality control .The voice is not clear for EPF1 Room. This has made this video unwatchable.
