Thanks for the more level-headed take on the Unity "drama", its so irritating to see people jump on the bandwagon without actually knowing what's going on.
The problem isn't with games that you pay for or have a subscription to play. Freemium games and free games that use skins and such to sustain are affected most. You get an audience of 10m downloads, barely manage to gain 200k dollars in the last year and instantly you have to pay (even at 0.01cent/install) 100k dollars. In a single check.
Since I have fiber everywhere, I almost install game each time I want to play them. I automatically delete everything not played the past week every time I saw some, and just reinstall it when I want it. Also, I'll at least install most games 3 times, one on my main pc, one on my laptop and one on my steamdeck
I really think in terms of the unity change then retroactively changing the TOS is on the verge of being illegal and also you’re only talking about payed games. What about free games so you make no money and then you are the dev that makes flappy bird per day on unity. You’d be paying more money to them than you’ve made in your entire life. I really think it’s short sighted not viewing indigenes and free games as severely suffering from this change.
It was clarified that its only after 200000 downloads and $200000 made, then it is retroactively charging them for those 200k, but not for any past downloads before Jan 1st 2024. It still destroys indie devs, with them having to pay way more in both fees as well as how much the revenue split hits because they typically have cheaper stuff. For any $1 game hosted to apple or steam, they will be getting charged 50% of their revenue from this and the store revenue. Devs already have to pay for game refunds as well, so less than 50% before paying any of the workers for the project. On top of this, every dev has to pay unity a flat $2k a year to be able to use it at all.
@@cameronsheffield8579 I didn’t see where they mentioned the the number of downloads/income. I just don’t see how they can possibly change this without someone like the EU getting involved seeing as they are the lead platform and accessible tech is key.
SUNSfan can rename their company and keep their monetization like Arcadia Redux (Dota 12v12) did. I am not sure this can solve the problem but Arcadia Redux is doing this

the unity exception for big companies makes it more of a big middle finger to indie devs
