Thank you so much for sharing this! Everyone I knew in the UK called them the "Austin Princess", including myself... Even the local Mega dealership, which sold everything from the Mini, Austin Allegros, Morris Marina & Ital, Rovers, Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Jaguars, Daimler, Rolls Royce, Bentley's and everything in between, in the days, called them the "Austin Princess".... They were listed in all the car accessory shops catalogues as Austin too... Probably also listed under BL in those same catalogues too, I'm sure, but they were all under the same company anyway... No need for a special tool when taking the cam shaft off, I've done it several times and there's nothing special, just need to take notes... OMG! I feel for you there, with the broken cylinder head bolt. I have never had that happen before, and absolutely no one I knew over the many years, had ever had that happen to them... not a known problem, from where I am in England.... Best of luck pal....

The greatest Austin I had must have been a "managers special" Allegro Equipe. Manager of a dealership in Dorset had this Allegro with "options" like a full webasto vinyl roof, uprated suspension, power steering, large twin SU carbs and some uprating on the camshaft and modifications to the valvegear. Bought it off the chaps widow who was too frightened of the thing to drive it. Inside it was all black vinyl including the roof and the seats were finished in the same black and red tartan found on TR7's, had six 52mm Smiths auxiliary gauges plus the standard quite extra Equipe gauging, the only nause was the valve stem seals were blown so when putting the foot down it became like a passing cloud behind, thing could eat XR3 Fords and had longer legs than the Escort XR3i, even won a pullaway with some Porsche bloke well up until 40mph then whatever he had kicked in and vroomed off. Great motor. I was minded of this as the old lady had told me how she had scrapped another of his cars, a Princess 4R as she was told it was worthless... what a shame it ended in the crusher esp as likely it would have been in as good nick as the Allegro as handy being the manager of an Austin-Rover dealership with all them apprentice trained mechanics on his paycheck :D

The only one of the era I never owned was a Princess. I had landcrabs, Maxi's, even a surprising Ambassador which I bought as scrap for £10, put on some new tyres and did some fluids right on the sellers driveway and took it to an MoT station to cover me for the drive home and apart from some very minor advisories it flew through the test O.o Tester noted it had been "Ziebarted" which prob saved it from Leyland Rouge eating in, a day with a washer and T cut and it looked like a brand new car. Swapped it for a very nice metallic burgundy Rover SD1 VDP, the Ambassador was still motoring around Bournemouth 5 years ago so still alive :D

That is bad luck and a big delay to progress. Previous ownership bodges can add hours or days to that one hour job. Not just previous owners of course, but those entrusted to look after and maintain the cars. It is far from rare in the professional environment. Over the past five decades, I have been buying and investigating problem but still nice cars previous owners have been frustrated by and given up trying to get right. That has revealed many professional failings and downright bodges. I have images of those my investigations have revealed. Invariably the poor car, engine or Head Gasket gets the blame when the real blame lies elsewhere.
You're taking this set back in your patient stride is admirable. There is an even nicer car in that Princess when you have completed your checking and maintenance. That will be your reward.

That sucks about the bolt, given welding can mess up a metal's hardness, it doesn't seem like a good idea to weld that one back together as it would be more brittle which of course made it break, it'd need heat treating to anneal the metal to make it more "stretchy", but that's one of them dark arts that metal forgers know, and I wouldn't know where to begin to get this sort of thing right given it's a critical component... :S
