You can hear Robert’s approach to Matte Kudasai in another song he recorded a few years earlier called “North Star”. It appears on his album “Exposure” lyrics sung by Daryl Hall.
Exactly what i felt when i first listened to "Matte Kudasai". Two beautiful songs with Fripp's guitar signature. I love his more melodic approach in these.
I simply LOVE this song. Definitely my favorite King Crimson song, and perhaps my favorite song of any artist. I am not a big fan of KC's material prior to the Discipline album, although one of my best friends was an absolute nut over them and tried to convert me. However, when he brought the Discipline album to our room from the very first listening, I was mesmerized thoroughly. Fripp is just one of the best technical guitarist that I have ever heard. If you don't believe me, how many bands are out there covering the KC material from the 3 albums released in the 80's. Watch a live performance of these songs and see the skill required to create and reproduce it over and over. I never saw the KC lineup that recorded the Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair albums (Fripp, Belew, Levin, and Bruford), but I did get to see these albums performed by BEAT - without Fripp or Bruford in the lineup. However, filling in were Steve Vai and Danny Carey - not too shabby. I have only been godsmacked by any erformance once or twice in my life, but this show was the greatest display of the mastery of your musical instrument, and of technical skills that well exceed their contemporaries. When they played this song at the BEAT concert, I literally almost cried, and not because it has a significance of any event - just because it was, and still is, one that reaches me somehow. It is difficult to explain because very little provokes this level of emotion for me. I was honored to see four of the best artists of their instruments all on one stage playing a marvelous selections from three albums that took me back to 1980 again. I only hope that they will continue to perform this show in the future.
In case someone brave wanted to sing like Adrian Belew ;) Still, by the windowpane Pain, like the rain that's falling She waits in the air Matte Kudasai She sleeps in a chair In her sad America When, when was the night so long? @@paulinab634 I don’t think anyone else could do what Adrian Belew did singing this song. It is his. Probably his finest vocal work. Between his vocalizing and Robert’s sumptuous guitar chordings, this is one of King Crimson’s most lovely moments, and the much needed respite from the intensity of the rest of Discipline.
@@AmbientMusicStudio Considering how many of the songs in the 80's were about Belew missing his wife, I bet it's about their melancholy if him being on tour instead of his home in America with her.
Call me crazy, call me nuts, but I've always associated this song with Yoko Ono, alone in the Dakota building, just after the death of John Lennon. "She waits in a chair, in her sad America....."
No ebows at that time I don't think. I believe it's just high gain with no reverb and the tone rolled all the way back. I think he was going for a violin sound, much like Duane Allman used slide to emulate harmonica!
Fripp sustained guitar is gorgeous -- reminded me of the 70 band. Belew recently said he didn't like the version with this guitar on top... it's over his seagull guitar sounds. Anyway.
I love this song. Saw King Crimson perform it in Toronto, Ontario and Camp Fortune, Quebec during the 80's tour of "3 of a perfect pair." Thanks for sharing it. But what happened to the vocals? KEH
Incidentally, the *answer* to the question, "When, when was the night so long?" ~~~~ Well, that was about 30 years earlier, when Hank Williams wrote: "I've never seen a night so long, When time goes crawling by. The moon just went behind a cloud, To hide his face, and cry."
Ebow ? my favorite tune the standard b of eadgbe is tuned up to c there is chord in this which is most difficult its such a beautiful song its worth the pain to get it though. you have to fret the note at first fret and let e string ring open below that. This sounds like an ebow to me or some sort of sustainer..
WOW! Nice. I hope someone has added this to the original to save me from doing it.Reminds me of Robert on Eno & Blondie tracks but, well, it's the Fripp & only
i was expecting him to talk about it but he just played about it. why not!
That’s how he talks!
Possibly the most remarkable artist of the last century.
The future, if it still exists, will view Robert Fripp very favorably.❤
I sure as hell do! One of my favorite guitarists. Him and Steve Vai. Vai being my all-time favorite.
You can hear Robert’s approach to Matte Kudasai in another song he recorded a few years earlier called “North Star”. It appears on his album “Exposure” lyrics sung by Daryl Hall.
He commonly "recycled" guitar parts from one tune to another.

Played this song for a few girl friends back in the day..... they just melted. And so did I .

Same. I'm still melting😁...
Love hearing both parts together. Thank you!
Sensitive interplay! :)
Awesome to hear this. One of my fave KC songs. I've copped Fripp's clean and distorted tones with my guitar so many times it's thievery.
one of my favorite songs...of all time
If only every "thief" had such excellent taste. Cheers!

Fantastic stuff!🎸🎶
I'm not sure this song ever needed a vocal after hearing this.
I really think the vocals are special for this song, but this would have been fine to hear instead.
Pure frippertronics!
The vocals are great too. Some of Adrian’s best singing IMO.
@@antoniolima9815 Not at all, actually.
precious man
This is perfect and glorious in so many levels :')
Just pure amazingness.
In her sad America
"America" originally referred to the new world, and not just the USA. Not sure that's what KC means, but at least it defuses the politics a bit.Maybe?

Very enjoyable blend. Thank you.
This song always reminds of Hendrix’s ballads.
Yes!
Little Wing
robin trower?
its the double stops i feel like
Hendrix did say that KC was the greatest band ever and that they were a huge influence on him
Esto es lo hermoso de la música, el sr. Fripp elaboró hermosamente un colchón armónico en el cual descanza la bella melodía de Adrián Belew.
Genios!!
So chill!
So sublime. Wow
Fascinating
The beginning licks from Robert... Little bit reminiscent of the Peace motif from Poseidon?
That was entirely intentional, to connect the new KC to the old.

I think a Fernandes Sustainer and a Big Muff pedal
