Audi S3 Review

  • The Audi S3 is a fun, small and dynamic compact luxury sedan. Based on the same platform as the VW Golf R, this is a premium take on a similar fun-to-drive formula. The S3 has a 2.0L turbocharged, direct injection engine with almost 300hp. This German sedan is a premium offering from Audi and should be a winner with Canadian drivers.
    Competitors to the S3 are the Mercedes CLA, Audi S4, BMW 2 Series, BMW 3 Series, Acura TLX, Acura TL, Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, Volvo S60, Volvo V60, Cadillac ATS, Cadillac CTS, Mercedes C-Class, Subaru WRX, VW Golf R, Volkswagen Golf R and the BMW X1.

    Zack, is the Golf R available with a sunroof yet in Canada? That one seems like one of the best performance values you can buy today and its interior and build quality aren't too shabby either. Seems like there's a long wait list for it, doubt there's the same demand (and low supply) for the S3.

    You forgot to mention how the 19 inch wheel package also gives you Audi magnetic ride. Definitely better ride quality than the VW counterpart. Before I bought my S3 I tested a few Golf R’s, and I find the S3 is just a more practical daily driver all around.

    • @happyisblue
      @happyisblue 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Audi is great, but VM isn't. I know VM owns Audi, but Audi is still better. If the S3 is based on a VM product, I'll be a little afraid of the reliability... I think getting a higher trim like A4/S4 will be better, as it's a fully Audi product. Just my two cents, but man, I really like the performance of the S3. :) BTW, the 2017 S3 is coming out

  • @renp8780
    @renp8780 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone said. These can be had for a great price while the Golf R, your paying full MSRP. So when you take that into consideration the price gap shrinks fast. I have been to several VW dealers and they have few if any Golf Rs, won't budge on the price, and offer NO test drives even if they have one. For a bit more money I can have a S3 with a nicer interior and exterior (subjective), and get to take it out and try it before I buy

    Why it is that all these manufacturers can not provide the buyer a choice between manual and automatic transmission is beyond me. .....such poor service. ....such lack of providing what the customer wants. .........I just don't see the positive in it for the customers.

  • @asmi06

    I was looking at this car, but really this seems like a car for nobody. If you want a two seater (like you've mentioned for young family), you're much better off with A5, if you need a 4 door car - A4. But since many young families tend to expand over typical period of car ownership (3 to 5 years), 4 seater makes more sense. I've asked that question to my Audi sales rep (I've ordered SQ5 and it's supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks or so), and he actually has same opinion.
    I was also looking at Q3, but it felt a little too impractical compared to Q5, it also lacked some options which I consider essential (like ventilated seats). So I wonder what's your opinion on Q3? What kind of clients does it target?
    Thanks!

    Interesting. Most other reviews say to the opposite to you - that the Golf is sharper, harder an faster turn-in.. I own a Mk7 and I'm tossing up whether to go an Mk7 R or a S3 hatch.. quite honestly the Golf is great value.. The one thing I dont like about the Golf is the leather - it's much nicer in the Audi.

    • @seang3538
      @seang3538 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +W-_-T Ok, M235/C class will both be upwards of 60K+, the IS200T is slow and awd is not available. Agree though when compared to the Golf R your "for that" comment makes sense.

    • @omgitsme435
      @omgitsme435 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean Gray Not sure where you're pricing it but you can easily option both IS and C class to around 52k or less since their base prices are around 38k. I didn't try pricing the M235i. C300 and IS 200t are both around 6.9 0-60 or less, not exactly speedsters but not slow either. The interiors of both are way better in my opinion with the C class being leader until the new A4 arrives anyway.

    • @omgitsme435
      @omgitsme435 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Z Why's it way better? The IS has been praised by many people and it shows in sales as well. The new turbo engine really brings the package together. I'd rather sit in the C class cabin than sprint 2 seconds faster..

    Great review as always. No denying that is one beautiful car. I'm sounding like an old fart but why does everyone focus on great power? "Class leading..." I've been driving for 30 yrs with no more than 145 hp cars and never for safety reasons "needed" more power. If you tow things that's one thing. But for our speed restricted Canadian roads...why?

    • @asmi06
      @asmi06 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Evan Lee It's simple - fun. I currently drive V8-powered sedan and is about to get brand new SQ5. The satisfaction you receive the moment you floor the pedal will ensure you will never ever want to come back to less powerful cars. As for speed limits - well I've got a track within reasonable distance from me so I go there from time to time when I want to be able to just floor the gas and not worry about speed limits. Driving at 200+ km/s is a lot of fun!

    Coming out of a manual 2013 VW GLI, autobahn, with navigation my natural next step was the Golf R. Drove it and really liked it. Same day made my way to Audi to drive the S3 and 3 hours later I walked out of Audi with a glacier white S with every bell and whistle. Yes, there are days that I miss manual, but what I don't miss are the materials used in the VW's. Anyone who thinks that the Audi fit and finish is not a step up most likely cant afford one. The Golf R is great car and there's always something to be said for a manual but the S3 is simply superior.

    • @efreitorhabibulin238
      @efreitorhabibulin238 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Penstar1919 hey, I'm deciding R vs S3, does the S3 really worth extra 15k? LED headlights, sunroof and magnetic ride are really nice to have... but damn 15k extra, man.

    • @Penstar1919
      @Penstar1919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Efreitor Habibulin you're right, 15k extra is a lot but you certainly do not need to go with all the options. If you are set on having all the options then yeah it'll be significantly more expensive than the VW. For me, the options have been worth every penny. The 19 inch wheel and mag ride package is awesome, sunroof I cant live without and the LED package is far better than standard HID's. I've had HID headlights in every car since my 2000 S4 and I cant live without them, but now that I have LED's I wonder if I could go back. Our other car is a 2012 fully-loaded Tiguan with the auto-leveling HID's and the LED's in the S3 are much better. Another aspect of the LED package that I love is that its not just outside the car. The full LED package extends in the cabin and the car looks oh so nice at night. For me, the Golf R's interior (where you actually spend your time) was way to similar to my GLI and the S3 is a nice departure from that look. It's all about what you want to spend and what you're looking for from a car. If you want the 4 rings quality, better warranty, better service, automatic loaners, etc., then the S3 is certainly the way to go. If you're just looking for something fun and fast, with some nice features, I'd go with the R. Keep in mind none of this takes in to account the manual/auto issue, that can be a deal breaker for sure.

    When I bought my 2017 A4 I was going back-and-forth between these two and I’m glad I didn’t go with Audi’s 3 series As it is too small and much cheaper looking (interior) then my car’s, although my car is just premium plus and not S line still I would choose my car over this at any given day especially now that I’ve almost driven the whole winter here in Toronto
    A4 is a 5.4 sec. car that is standard, it’s a way better option for any Audi or German car buyers. Don’t believe me go and test drive them both..

  • @Packerm87
    @Packerm87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really want this car. I live in the US and 5-door cars are being faded away. Manual transmissions are even being faded away DUE to DCT. My friend TEST DROVE it, and he said the car shifts so fast he couldn't keep up with it. DCT are very expensive but more sporty to drive, manufactures are able to put more stability computers in the car to help with aggressive driving. This car is NOT focused for track driving thats why it does not have a Manual transmission. It targets 50k buyers that don't care about shifting but want a FUN car to drive. In the US the WRX even comes with an auto trans now and its EVEN a CVT. Times are changes folks, just have to get use to it. If you are a die hard manual driver, you will end up sending more time in used lots now then the show rooms. +Motormouth Canada, idk about the Canada market but can you agree?
