    I often have to flag fruit or grafted branches with pink or blue tape to find them again. blue is for grafted varieties and pink is for fruit.

    Maybe myth : Excellent summer fruit yield is a indicator of a harsh winter to come.

    My strawberry plants all but a few have died/dried to a crisp. This heat and sun in summer is brutal. First summer with them will they bounce back or should I use the pots on new things

    • @SlackerU
      @SlackerU 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 84f & try to get as many hours possible near that temperature throughout the growing season. We might all need high-tunnels for winter-cover & summer-shade.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they're dried up, it's likely not possible for them to come back. You need to work on your green thumb, Dean. Really try to learn about the soil and you'll be a pro in no time.

    • @RollTheWindowsUp_WISAD
      @RollTheWindowsUp_WISAD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RossRaddi I just don't have a way to shade them. I was only asking if I keep the head somewhat alive by keeping the soil moist. Which has always been even when they starting dropping all the leaves. Will they come back in winter. Guessing not. I never thought my strawberry plants would survive a full year on my roof. But yea I need tk learn more

      Some of us just don't have the right weather others with beautiful food forests have! This 110deg dry heat is brutal on plants ☹️

    • @RollTheWindowsUp_WISAD
      @RollTheWindowsUp_WISAD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Laurel-Crowned yea I mean I'm in the middle east its brutal on my terrace unless I invest in shading and stuff but I'm just an amateur trying to grow what ever I can without killing myself over it. I don't think ill grow strawberries unless j find good deal in the winter but otherwise each year they will suffer

    Hey Ross, what Gumi do you have in your garden? Is it multiflora or latifolia and which cultivar? Also, how many degrees minus have your Gumi endured yet? Beautiful Garden you are growing there!

    Why prok persimmon is your favorite? Persimmons so small and already flowering. My persimmon is 12’ tall, have just 3 first flowers. I like your Pawpaws.

      Prok is very early. The earliest astringent I know of. Very reliable, good fruit quality, productive.

    Have you tried oregano oil and epsom salt? It’s good for bacteria. I’m doing no dig and barely amend my soil, just compost.

    • @SlackerU
      @SlackerU 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To max out my garden I needed nitrogen & a foliar iron-&-zinc spray for high-phosphorus lockouts after rain-storms. IDK about oregano oil but I've got the plant in the garden.

    • @Laurel-Crowned
      @Laurel-Crowned 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlackerU is that why my potted plants have been dying after a rain storm these past two years? I've always had great results with rain water but these past two years have been killing every thing and they're not getting over watered

    • @SlackerU
      @SlackerU 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Laurel-Crowned I'm no expert at potted plants. My current preferred method at watering potted plants is to dunk the pot in a tub of water to ensure I get any hydrophobic patches in the pot, sometimes I add a drop of soap. There is a inedible mushroom here that makes my soil hydrophobic as it takes over.

    Have you tried growing any of the newer hybrid persimmons like JT-02 or Sestronka? Also do you have any persimmons that actually produce pollen? Most of the varieties you mentioned are 100% female so the bees working them wouldn’t be contributing to pollination. So true about young persimmons being lanky! My 2-3 year old grafts have to be heavily staked so they don’t fall over.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not tried newer hybrids. A lot of persimmon variety trialing in my future.

    • @hhn6
      @hhn6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RossRaddi my most hopeful grafts this year are the hybrids Sestronka and a PVNA hybrid. Hoping they grow strong! My friend reports Sestronka is a lower vigor tree with huge fruit and better than Hachiya too!

    Ross do you have any insect pressure on your fruit trees? If so, how do you treat?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. I talk about insect pressure at the end of the video. The worst thing I'm dealing with is lantern flies. Those thus far have no answer.

    How do you protect your fruit trees from plum curculio? Do you think mulching and improving the soil has led to predators killing off the population in your yard? thanks

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weaker trees get hit with plum cucurlio harder than the healthy trees. As soon as I improved the soil and therefore the health of the tree, plum cucurlio became a non-issue.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if the bug ecosystem changes I've seen had an effect. It could be the soil, it could be the many sources of food for predatory insects increasing their numbers.

  • @abdellahmouhtafil9869
    @abdellahmouhtafil9869 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ross, I live in northeast Philadelphia as well. I had a big big plum cucurlio problem that wiped out most of my peaches, nectarines, apples and pears. Were you affected at all? If so, any advice? Please and thank you

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Change the bug ecosystem in your yard. I talk about that at the end of the video. For plum cucurlio specifically, make sure you remove all fallen fruit, thinned fruit and infected fruit on the trees. Do not let them complete their life cycle.

    Aren't Pawpaws native to your area? There are probably enough native pollinators around, carrying Pawpaw pollen from trees in the area

    • @agpawpaw5912
      @agpawpaw5912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but they are rare here

    • @RossRaddi

      There are no pawpaw trees in the area. The only native ones I know of are at least 5 miles away bordering Philadelphia.
