    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive TH-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 1996 Rover 216 SE Convertible (1.6 Cabriolet/R8), we get interrupted by aircraft (again), put the famous Quentin from Furiousdriving through his paces, complain about the R65 gearbox, do not operate the hood, go for a risky drive with no microphone and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    This is such a nice car. I watched all of Matt's videos as he was getting it back up and running and ultimately into the wonderful condition it is today. Sadly lack of space and an ongoing long term Capri project prevents any chance of me being able to purchase it. Thanks for the video sir :-)

      Thank you, Rob! I was with him the day that he bought the car, it hadn't even been transported home yet, and I saw it at various stages of repair over many months, so it was great to finally get to have a go in it. We all have that problem with space, don't we?

    I think you enjoyed that! Matt made an outstanding job restoring that car .

      The bushings in the gearbox will need some attention at some point, as it is a bit floppy (standard for an R65 of this mileage), but other than that, there's not a lot to do!

    I watched Quentin from Day 1, and being partial to convertibles, loved it. So I'm not surprised that you thoroughly enjoyed driving Quentin! A lot of time, effort and money 💷 was put into Quentin, and I felt this was one Mr. Richardson should have kept.
    I do hope this goes to another loving home.
    I will say nothing compares to driving, and riding, in a convertible, NOTHING.

      Well sir, we did have some fun, and Quentin drove a lot better than he did when Mr Richardson first bought him. The intention always was to sell him, even from the start, so that is what he did, although a lot of people did get upset about it.

    Its good to see Quinton again! I actually saw it in the metal at the NEC Restoration show. Well done to Matt for bringing this car back to life!

      I only waited two years to have a go, but I did finally manage it. I had seen him at various stages before the show in March, he was looking very shiny there indeed.

    Quentin the convertible is one of the best I seen in a long while. If only my bank account was a bit more willing.
    Also, sorry for disturbing you while you were filming this.

      No problem at all, sir! I had quite forgotten until you mentioned it. It's hard to resist buying a nice R8, it seems...

    Ah, Quentin. Matt put in a huge amount of effort in restoring this car, there were many times where it seemed a challenge too far. However it paid off and it's a mighty fine example of one of these. Another excellent review Sir!

      I was there with him the day after he bought it, sir, before it had even arrived at his house, so I was keen to actually drive it when I got a second chance. One huge amount of work, as you say!

    It’s a lovely car and the level of finish is outstanding, someone is going to inherit a super example. Great that you could have an open air review!

      I think it's up for auction now, I hope that Chris gets a good price for it. The gearbox could do with some new bushes (typical for an R65 gearbox of this age and mileage), but apart from that, it's pretty exceptional.

    Quinton.... One of my favourite R8's. A really enjoyable review and glad you got to sample Quinton.
    See I managed to sneek into the video at the end up on the balcony, but was interesting to see the review filmed from another angle as well.

      You did indeed sneak into the video, Mr Watters, and we were glad to see you there! It had only been two years, but it was worth the wait.

    So good to see a chap in his element.
    I do believe that you smiled for the the entire 16 minutes of the review.
    No argument either, Quentin must be one of the finest examples of the Rover R8 Convertible, if not the very best.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apart from the typically floppy R65 gearbox (it just needs some new bushes, apparently), this car is hard to fault and a pleasure to drive. After two years of waiting, it wasn't a disappointment at all.

      Yes it's incredible looking the red top really sets off the brilliant silver paint job. Rear electric windows would of been better on Rovers part tho.

      I'm sure if we were running Rover at the time, those little niggles and oversights wouldn't happy.
      The Sterling would of been rear wheel drive, 5 stud wheel nuts, beige leather interior a no cost option, it's the little things.

    Thanks for this video! I felt like watching a retro Rover review after watching nearly all episodes of Cracker (Hint Hint!). Jokes aside this is a fascinating car. Given the Honda connection, I find it surprising that Honda did not consider a similar cabriolet model. This looks like fun! Reminds me of the Renault 19 cabriolet to some extent. I am not sure if this particular model was sold in New Zealand, although the 216 had a following here. I keep thinking I have seen one though.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know R8s were sold in Australia and New Zealand. Honda had sort of replaced the Concerto by the time the Cabriolet came out with a car called the Domani (although it continued alongside for many markets), so I don't think they were really bothered about niche variants of the old model by then.

    • @alaricbragg7843
      @alaricbragg7843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes we got the Domani, but only as used imports. Some were even produced by Isuzu and called Geminis!

    It is one hell of a restoration, i think there were times when Mr Richardson nearly gave up on this car. Me personally I dont like the red roof but thats just me................Also who put the block 3D letters on the reg plate, (not a fan) i dont think it was Matt?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure about the plate, sir, I prefer the standard plates as well myself, but each to their own, I suppose. It was a huge job, and I would never have been able to keep going through it all as Mr Richardson did.

    It has the wrong wheels on the car, these are Coronet, they should have the 6 spoke turbo wheels which were fitted to the facelift Cabriolet and Coupe models from the 96/97MY onwards, except the VVC models which again had different rims. When Matt bought the car, it was fitted with the pre facelift 7 spoke rims. Still looks good and a nice save. As with all Cabriolets you get a lot of scuttle shake, they never feel solid unlike the saloons, estates or coupes as they are true monocoques.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have also seen the Rover 200 BRM type wheels on these (very similar to the slightly later Cosmos wheels on my old Rover 45 V6), which do look very good, even if they are not standard. Yes, Mr Richardson has swapped around various alloy wheels on his R8 fleet. This took absolutely ages to complete (he bought it in May 2020), but it was absolutely worth it.

  • @roygardiner2229
    @roygardiner2229 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would like to ask you what the spares situation is on Rover cars from this era. I like the R8 models but also instinctively like the "baby" Mercedes Benz (190E). However, it seemed from a video I saw on the Mercedes Benz model that spares can be difficult to obtain. I suspect Rover spares are far more readily available.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well sir, you can get a lot of bits for them, as they are shared with a lot of other Rovers and Hondas, the most difficult bits are interior trim, glass and body panels, but these R8s do have a really supportive community of owners (I should know, I have owned two myself), so that helps a bit too. I did drive a 190E on the channel last year, and that was great too.

      Having owned three R8 Rover 200s myself, I can confirm that they are quite good cars, although they do tend to need a bit of work to keep them going.
