Currently owned of MG 1.4 ZR. Great car altho i had to change the head gasket. Guys be very careful if you are to buy one of these beauts. Head gasket is one of majro problems, if it isnt well looked after you might have to change the whole engine due to mayo effect.
I have a MG Zr & Mgf,, lot of car for The money, and fun to drive, give one a go thay make me smile
22 years old, this'll be my second car had a fiesta for 2 years no claims, got a quote on this for 700 hundred :)
700 is a sweet deal, I was paying 1500 on a 1.4 Corsa sxi 😕 think one of these will be my next motor 😀
Good vid, I really want a zr for my first car, there good looking motors
My insurance for a 1.4 105 went as follows, Upgraded my 1.2 clio which was 2,100 to my MG, insurance went up to £3,000, after 1YNCB, it went to £1,007, and it's such a fast car for what it is, i have a 55 plate silver, only trouble i've had so far is dodgy alternator, and then in result had a dead battery after say, 15 minutes of standing with lights on a few times!
Love the MG. Love driving it.
Gorgeous car mate I just got myself a red Rover 25 1.4 twin cam. Prob the same engine as yours it's a flying machine :)
I have a mg zr at 80k miles head went few weeks ago £300 to get fixed. drives like a dream again. So any one worried about HGF dont be. its cheap to get fixed good fun cars.
Make sure you gently warm it up, the reason the Head Gasket blows is because the thermostat is on the inlet side of the coolant channels in the engine, which means that the coolant has already been through the radiator. So when you rev it from cold the engine gets really hot inside, so the thermostat doesn't open till it's too late. And when it finally opens it causes thermal shock inside the engine. Damaging the Head gasket because there's a massive heat difference inside the engine. Make sure to check the coolant liquid at least once a week, the K-series holds just enough coolant not enough and the Gasket will blow. As long as you keep it topped up and warm it up gently you shouldn't have a Blown Gasket.
Good vid mate im hopeing to get one of these for my first car 👍👍
I have an MG ZR 160 pushing 190 and this year with only 2 years NCB fully comp £866 with Direct Line.
Loving how clean your engine bay is, Shame about all the oil in the water bowl though, head gasket has gone on this car before?
@FoxyTomux I think they are cheap as the company went bust but have now recently started up again. Also the OEM parts are cheap and easy to find so I don't think that's an issue. All I can suggest is checking the head gasket as this had been known as the main weakness for k series engines
@DJRanimal As Ive got my plate up here I can't say I'm afraid, but its a well known company common on most comparison websites.
Got my daughter her first car mg zr in blue.. She loves it.. Her insurance under her own name is £1050 and I say that's high.. And we live in Belfast ... You guys paying 2000+ !!!!
@SiimpleHarry his mates probably put an induction kit at the back of his engine bay which will slow it down and make it louder, given it bigger wheels thus fucking up the gearing and cut the springs making it lower whilst damaging the chassis when the springs bottom out over speed humps. But all in you can't expect anything more from a pikey
A very nice first car I just upgraded my old car and now have a rover 25 basically the same car but it's lovely to drive and goes like stink lol
Well have fun
Hope to get one of them soon....
Very beautiful car mate.. what year is it? I was planning to buy the same car but I am worrying about the spare parts. What do you think of it?
my first car too, Only passed my test last week and i already love. It has a body kit on already. My insurance was 1500. Not bad for an 18 year old. Are you doing yours up?
Use money supermarket for provisional and go compare for full uk, there's a new company on there selling insurance dirt cheap my quote was £670 might as well do monthly as I can put deposit of around £120 and pay £70 a month
+ben newman good companies for a zr at 17?
@FoxyTomux to be completely honest I haven't driven that many cars but I can say that the pick up is great and not to sound cheesy or anything, but it really does corner like its on rails lol
@Robodisco Don't think so buddy, must have been a different one! I'm definitely keeping mine...can't afford insurance on anything else lol
@smilie120 Brown gunk was already on the expansion tank when I bought it, fortunately its only on the edges so the coolant is crystal clear. But its bloody hard to clean off lol, but from chemical tests seems like the original head gasket is still going strong ;)
Nice car mate! :) i have one too, fantastic to drive. One tip of advice! never EVER rev it hard from cold. It completely ruins the engines! :)
@danielharris97 Unless your planning on getting the car when you're 21, I would forget about the ZR 160 mate. As a 1.8, there are very few insurers that will give you a quote and those that do would range from £9000+. My advice would be to stick to the 1.4 (105)
Nicely Kept!
Just bought my first car, Mg zr 5 doors in silver, I think they're amazing! Only problem
Is bloody insuring it :/
I buyed today a MG ZR 160. Its my first car too.
was going to get a mg zr, was told to stay well clear of them and rovers, parts are expensive and an arse to get a hold of.
Consumable parts are pretty easy to get hold of and most aren't expensive - good MG owners clubs out there.
@SoapOperaJist This car on paper is one of the fastest "first cars" you could get. Having said that because of this, your guaranteed to burn a hole in your pocket as insurance is VERY high. So in your case maybe something more sensible like a clio or corsa?
cheers , this has helped alot mate :)
I have the Rover 25 105hp equivalent to this, im 17 and this is my first car, and its £900 for me, using admiral multicar, me as a named driver and 5 years ncb from my parent. :)
@SiimpleHarry Il make a video when i get a new iphone (last one got stolen) then just upload it directly from it. I might get a dump valve, love the sound.
Nice car
Dude I used to have one - awesome car!
Just watch out for the head going - mine went at 80k :(
Just bought an mg zr 1.4 mk2 05 for £950 mint condition and insurance for provisional was only £700 but got a quote of 2000 for full uk for when I turn 18, btw imm16 at the moment, but with 1 years no claim it goes from 2000 down to 900. Put your mum or dad on insurance, fully comp sometimes puts the price down, the more expensive the car is the cheaper insurance, colour, where you live and if you put on insurance that your putting it on the street and not your drive its even cheaper, your welcome
is it legal to put your mum and dad on it
Tom Dempsey not as secondary drivers
The CHAVS chariot of choice. plastic dash is even made of old shell suits
When I think of chavs in cars I think of an 03 plate corsa :P
Devonte Ager lower quality ones those.
Sick car
@SiimpleHarry i doubt a clio may do lol.. anyway nice wagon mate ;)
Great video
@SoapOperaJist I bought it as an impulse decision at auction and I can honestly say I have no regrets. It depends what your looking for in your first car though.
not the problem the head gasket blowing up is though lol
@SiimpleHarry The body kit was just put on on monday, so i told the truth haha. Aviva. It's a great first car, but im with you. Do it up then sell it for something better. Like an evo ;) haha
How much did this cost you? Oh btw you from Sutton, cos I recognised the big B & Q as you were doing your drive.
Good car.. I have one Rover 200 SDI 2000cc 105cv..
Zr are amazing
wow you drove past Sutton?! that's near where I live haha!
I had one of these wen I was 17great lil car and quick for a 1.4 but head gasket went :( it was only 1900 for me on insurance :p
no i am from belgium but the mg zr 1.4 that i found is a benzine (petrol)
did u allready had problems with it?
Awk your mk1 is a year newer than mine :( great wee runners though eh?
also its the same price to insure a 2.0 litre diesel, which one would be better?
@NornIronLegends wow dude you read my mind, evo is definitely my next choice! Seems like you've got a good car on your hands...maybe create a video for us to see?
im getting either .. mg zr 160 , honda civic type r 2004 or citreon saxo vtr as my first car
good choices!
@SiimpleHarry cheers for the advise mate , should i get a citreon saxo vtr untill im 21 and then swith ?
Was plannin on getting this as my first car.. honestly, is it worth it?
College friend just got a insurance quote for one of these for £1100 at 17. Im trying to persuade him to buy one (his 1st car already blew up after 3 months). Want a MG buddy for my ZS 2.5 xD.
+CAElite what company was this as im a big mg fan but really struggling for insurance poor car is sitting in the drive:(
@TheRascal5678 Insurance details in video description. As for the engine make sure that the head gasket is still strong/upgraded as this is the main issue for the k series. Otherwise they are pretty solid!
im going to buy one now!!!!then im taking a metro 1.4 twin cam 16v GTiSE engine and sticking it in =] until i find another metro that is
@foREVer250894 Yeah mate it was under my own name. I figured if I was going to pay so much money, might as well spend a bit more and start earning no claims bonus!
@SiimpleHarry
I just want a nice easy car, good on petrol, fast enough and not bad insurance..
I got a quote for a 1.4 (105), fully comp for 2878, and that's non black box, and is it defo worth getting for a first car, i do like my MG's, but i can't see me being able to fork out nearly 3k to insure it, thanks.
My car is a mg ZR 1.8 only cost me £2000 to insure with a black box at the age of 17
ive just ben reading all the comments on here and i was just wondering how are people getting quotes for under 2500 becuase ive been getting them for £4500 .... please tell me who you are with
nice my first car was and still is a 2.8l vr6 mk3 golf :) £1700 a year when i was 17 and now i have muilt car on a passat tdi and a vr6 for £670 a year btw im 21 :P
@SiimpleHarry whats the insurance like on it? im wanting a zr 1.4 but heard alot goes wrong with them
@SiimpleHarry or should i get mg zr 105 , are they cheap to insure not over £5000
my insurance shouldnt be too bad either iam buying mg-zr 1.4 too :D iam 22 lol would you do a video review?? :D
Any ideas how I can get my 1.4 ZR insured for when I'm 17 for under £3000. I've been getting £5,600 on my dads insurance -.-.
£27,000 third party for me, £6000 with parents on the insurance -.-
whats it like on fuel cos im considering getting one now that i have passed my test
Just had a look at insurance for an MG ZR and it's only £640 for a 19 year old with 1 years NCB...
Haha I was watching this and thought I recognised the place, your round Sutton one way system
im 17 and for a 1.4zr i have just done an insurance quote on a comparison website and the cheapest ive been offered is 5000!!! know any ways i can bring that down?
1 x £370.10
11 x £366.90
Cheapest I get on confused, third party theft & fire, nearly 22 years old, had license under a year, driving convictions in 2010 (UT50, DD10, LC10, IN10 - same incident).
It's bullshit, I might aswel just pay 500/month for an newish ST and drive something decent.
im 15 and 16 in a month how much would it be to insure the mg zr 160 because ill have £3000 to buy the car but my dad is paying for insurance and i need help to see how much it would be
I have seen this one on sale exactly the same images
I'm 17 and my first car is a 1.8 ltr mg zr.
Insurance is a beeyatch!
hi , i am thinking of getting the 1.4 but ill have £1500 to buy the car and then £3500 to get insurance is that enough?
Do you still have this car? If so whats the condition like now? And did you get a black box fitted at 17?
admiral?
@SiimpleHarry how much was the insurance on this when your 17 mate ?
hi i have a question this cars have rover engines right?
I'm 24 with one of these cars and i pay £1,000 a year why is my insurance so high? Got 3 years no claims like!!
I have the Zr vvc 158 I'd have to say the cars odd some days it's really nippy others it seems to be sluggish it is loosing water slowely & oil leak from the top rocker but I got a really cheap quote to get this all done cam belt water pump & the rocker £300 all in from a mg specialist not over heated or anything to date but for me it' handling isn't great vey jumpy then I am 36 & come out if a Volvo for many years & this Zr was free so
how much is insurance?
@NornIronLegends £1500 on a done up model at 18? Wow someone didn't tell the insurer's the truth =P lol who are you with? As far as doing it up I don't think I will as I think I'll sell it in the next few years for something with more power!
hey i was wondering i am 17 and i wonna buy this car and i wonna ask you how much gasoline does uit use? because i am not rich tyou know :p
Ayyyyy, last bit of the video was in Sutton lol

Just out of intrest comment back wat they quoted u
3000 third party
SONG??? niceeee
song??
@wilsterj1 unless your rich u cannot afford a ZR 120 or 160 for a 17 year old. my insurance for a 17 year old driving a 1.4 105 ZR is £9,875. so a 120 will be much more and a 160 hell no. so unless your mate is uninsured or is insured fraudly ( on his dads when he is the main driver) this is impossible.
