Gas, when the power goes out, turn on generator I have hot shower. And a gas range that cooks my food. Growing up, power always went out up in TIM BUCK TOO.
I watched the whole thing. Gas appliances have been demonized recently, but I find it interesting that people migrating to your area are that afraid of gas. My sister and her husband recently remodeled their kitchen. All the new gas stoves required electricity for the controls to operate, and power outages are an issue for them. They bought a fully refurbished gas stove from the '50s that requires no electricity. It works (and looks) great!
I was starting to wonder why you was letting the valve drippy drip drip and the plumbing being kind of wank lol but it's getting ripped out so that makes sense. Looking forward to more on this project.
I love gas appliances. Water heater, furnace, stove ALL GAS! When you live in the hurricane zone, you will appreciate those gas lines that are buried beneath the ground and will almost always be available.
Where I live, wind + solar generate 25%. Nuclear represents another 20%. Fossil fuels will probably be less than 50% within a few more years. And yes, I'm in the USA, and our electricity is also cheaper than the average price in the USA.
"Green" is all relative. Gas to your house is incredibly leaky - many families leak more than they burn! Utilities are working to move to renewables, and we should all be thinking of ways to make our homes more efficient in the first place.

Most leaks occur when homeowners or contractors alter, change or damage lines or appliances and do not do a leak check to ensure the integrity of the gas system was not compromised.
Our utility company is still offering customers a rebate for converting major appliances to gas. We were thinking of converting our 20-year-old electric water heater to gas, but when it went out last year, we just replaced it with another electric unit because we wanted hot water sooner rather than later. Our plumber drained the old water heater through a hose to the outdoors, since we don't have a floor drain. But that didn't get all the water. Before hauling the old unit away, he broke the clogged drain valve off so the rest of the water would drain.
I've lived with both. Gas is the way to go in my opinion. You have hot water when the power is out and typically cheaper to run and lasts longer. Ease of install definitely goes to electric though.
I remember my friend getting a new flat with an electric water heater in the eighties, his first and subsequent electric bill was over £200. He said was there anything that could be done as it was costing so much, he said he could not afford new central heating. I said I could fit a new gas boiler but only use the water heating side and when he saved up enough I would fit the rest of the system On his first bill using the gas boiler it was down to £50 for the month for the electric and £30 for the gas and thanked me for saving him a lot of money. He rang about a week after the this bill and said he had the power company come around to check why the electric bill had dropped so much, believing he was tampering with the meter told them why, they still replaced the electric meter and where going to test it. never heard anything back from them.
That's a 150 Pound difference. The average UK electric rate in 1989 was 8.2c/KWH. That would mean they used 1829 fewer KWH for that month, or about 61 KWH less per day. Assuming a 80 Degree F raise in temp (60 to 140F), it takes 0.195Kwh per gallon to raise the temperature of the water. Therefore 1829/.195 means they heated 9379 gallons of water in a 30 day cycle or 312 gallons of water a day, and a typical British water heater has a 50 gallon capacity. No wonder they had a high electric bill, they were showering 7 hours a day.
Grrrreat video! Im looking forward for this series! May sound crazy but I have both, a gas and an electric. The electric is first in line to preheat the water to about 90 deg. The gas then takes it to 140. Both are 50 gals and I put in a pressure pump between them to boost it up to 55psi. Its great to never run out of hot water.
What’s your advice? 1998 tract home built with cpvc. Seems like it’s mostly ok if you don’t touch it but supposedly it can get real fragile. I’m thinking I’m gonna have to keep replacing it all with pex… 3 neighbors have had issues with it in the past couple years: one was turning off a toilet angle valve, one was removing a vanity sink line and it broke a joint way up in the ceiling, and another had a joint crack in the crawl space during snowstorm… but I’m hanging on so far…. Rip it all out?
We're taking our chimney for gas exhaust out as well -- the chimney above the roof was in terrible shape and was about to crumble over -- and we're actually putting the money into moving to all-electric instead of rebuilding the chimney. I'm looking forward to having solar + battery installed next year and being less dependent on large corporations for my power and operation.
I am curious if older homes with chimneys ever cause structural issues with the framing when removing them as it may(?) have been incorporated as a structured element
Ok Handy, why did you use red pex for the cold side input and blue pex for the hot side outlet? Oh, and what about the pressure and temp relief valve? I’m not sure going electric is any greener or cheaper than gas. Maybe you have an abundance of free solar panels on this house?
If you can eliminate the chimney and not pull cold make up air into the house - ele water tank can be better ( depends on rates ). Best is heat pump water heater.
I didn’t hear how much it costs for the electric green tank? I’d be worried about the power draw from them, and the effects on other high power items like microwaves, washer and dryers, hot tubs etc while working on the same intervals I just had my 18yr old (sweet👌) gas 50g hot water changed out for a 60g and it cost $2800 🇨🇦ian ..cause I don’t do gas myself lol

Resistance heat is fine if you don't mind massive bills slow recovery time. I have a tankless on my wall it cost $20 a year to run and never ever runs out of hot water. I paid $200 for it on fb marketplace.
I live in Cincinnati and the winters here are cold. My street is all electric. They never ran gas lines in the late 70's so no one has gas. My electric heat pump is always running in the winter and after my kids shower the water never feels hot enough so I am always yelling at them to hurry up and get out. I hate it and wish i never got it. I even have looked into what they do in the country and just have a natural gas tank installed on the property and change it all over to gas.

I have mine set up so if the grid goes down i still have power to run my essentials. As it is now i bank the money that the system saves me each month.

Gas is way better. Heats water quicker. If you lose power, you will still have hot water with a gas water heater. With electric, that water will be luke warm in a day. A lot of people don't know that
Electricity is the most inefficient way to make heat and by far, the most expensive. The only solid reasoning I see to doing this is if you're installing an oversized solar power system and expect a net zero power bill.......eventually.

I believe there was a study that just came about how heat pumps are 30% more efficient than gas down to -20. You can say what you want, but anytime I can save money I'm all for it. Times are changing, no reason to bring in politics.

Why didn’t you extend the TPV (on top of the water heater) to 2”-6” from the floor or to a floor drain?

Heat pump water heater owner here. It's paying for itself in savings, and doubles as a free dehumidifyer.

What part of the country are you in? My heat pump has many settings that uses an element if needed, but I rarely need it in my climate.

just an FYI, those sharkbite fittings for the water heater are garbage. i had 2 corrode near the swivel. i remade it with pex, been fine ever since.
did they leak or just surface corrosion? the sb flex is nice at the upper connection area where you can't do straight connections to tank.

A 4500 watt electric heater is half the power of a 30,000 btu gas heater. So it takes twice as long to get got water back.
