At around 8:35 a small miracle occurs when you say " and just allowing your mind to settle".. the noise from machinery in the background seizes and..SILENCE, just as you speak those words, and then it restarts. This small little happening really conveys the meaning, peace and virtue of allowing the mind to settle in such a nice way ! :)

I will stop by to visit and hike the trails this summer, and plan for another extended stay sometime in the future :)

Thank you so much for your insight. I will be going their soon, I had to reschedule my time there. I really took a great deal of information from what you have stated. I am truly looking forward to my trip to the Monastery at Gethsemani .

The peace you lost was lost because you probably didn't cultivate your inner contemplative with care and unselfish concern. Anyone who has spent a full week in silence (and I know this from repeated experience) and becomes upset with their environment soon after did not go on a silent retreat, they went on a searching party. A silent retreat is a HUGE jump to take for the uninitiated who have never even been on any kind of retreat before. It sounds like instead of being receptive to peace and the grace of God you viewed it as an experience you deserved to encounter. I say all of this out of love as I pray you hopefully can find true peace, silence, and grace through a silent retreat. Especially at an abbey like Gethsemani. The monks do not become monks to flee the world. They pray as monks so that they may enter into the depths of this world, the human spirit, and a relationship with God. So that they may find God in every human being, every creature, every busy interaction, and every strip mall. If you're a faithful catholic and are truly concerned with your salvation and spiritual life then please search for a spiritual director. They will help you develop towards a fulfilling silent retreat and a strong search for grace throughout life. God Bless. I'll pray for you.

Do the monks live with air conditioning ? I imagine it gets quite hot in the summers in KY
