Really been into this cassette/tape loop stuff for about a month now and now you are releasing a video on this. Great timing, man! Love your lofi stuff, keep up the great work!
That dirty drum loop and the speed-bent ambient really came out awesome! As an aside, the beeps on the voicemail tape are very likely control tones for the recorder. I suspect they're only on one of the two channels of the tape, though your video makes the tape sound mono so I can't be sure.
My current job is media transfer, & converting the cassettes is one of my favorite parts about it! I love analog audio. It's such a fascinating medium!
I would assume that the answering machine uses one channel for control signals and one channel for the voice recording in mono. Playing these casettes in stereo sounds like what you just heard.
This had a feel, a groove, that has been a bit absent lately in mainstream (at least to me). Nostalgic yet refreshing. Very chill. If you sit back in a big comfy chair and bop your head unknowingly while listening to this, then you know you did it right. You did it right.

There’s a really fascinating temporal aspect to this kind of music. The idea of setting up music that is completely tethered to the speed of playback, then altering it with different recordings at different speeds to achieve different pitches is a really fascinating premise. Imagine what you could do if you had two of them, and recorded them back and forth at different speeds to get slower and slower or faster and faster samples. I also like how destructive it is. When you’re working in a software suite like ableton, you can make a copy of your sample and keep it forever. If you only have like two tapes, that’s all the recording real estate you have. It has to breed some pretty creative solutions to problems.
Ha! @AndrewHuang you're the first person I've heard talking about multi-track recording on cassette tapes using a boombox. That's how I started recording when I was 5 years old with my Yamaha VSS-30 and built-in 8-Bit voice sampler. I haven't stopped yet!
