The reason why JLo has a bigger projection worldwide has to do with the fact that JLo is an American of Puerto Rican extraction, where Shakira is born and raised in Colombia. I think she even had to learn English as an adult when she was introduced into the English speaking market. It took her a few albums to get good lyrics in English, where her compositions in Spanish are way above to those of her in English. I think JLo navigated the industry more naturally as she didn't need to "crossover"; she was there already. It is only through Shakira's massive success in the Hispanic market that producers bet on her to be also appealing to Anglo audiences. Also, Shakira is a composer, where JLo isn't. She is more of a performer. Don't get me wrong, I love JLo; however, JLo started as a dancer then turned actress and singer (with the Selena biopic, where she did a terrific job). But JLo is more of a show-woman/performer, where Shakira is a true musician. I also agree on what you say about how effortless Shakira can belt her notes, her breath control is superior to JLo's and here is where you can tell who is been training her voice and who hasn't. Whatever the differences, it is probably the best superbowl show to this date. I thought none could beat what Beyoncé did a few years ago, guess I was wrong.

And the genre is Regueton, which is big in Latin America. and yes, her voice is so versatile and volatile that yes it sounds more arabic in some other songs. she can sound soft or strong in different songs. I love the fact that you love and feel her music even though you don´t know Spanish. and that you can feel her voice, which is unique, though its been criticized and made fun of (check her US parody videos) thanks guys
