    I stumbled across your channel very recently and have to say it has been a very interesting watch. Many years ago my Dad done a lot of planning to get a boat built from scratch but unfortunately the plan never came to fruition. So watching your journey, as I say, has been quite interesting. However, the thing that makes your vlog stand out in my opinion is fact that you put so much into your videos. I've watch 20 episodes so far and I feel like we are friends already when we've never even met! Your openness and honesty when making content is refreshing! The absolute best bits though............are the bloopers! You guys have me in stitches at the end of every video and, as someone else commented before, it shows just how much hard work you put into your channel! Bravo Colin & Shaun - I'm looking forward to wading through the rest of your channel 👏🏼

    I think it was probably easier the first time as they didn’t know what they didn’t know. When you see tons of boats it’s easy to get overwhelmed. No boat will ever have everything you want. You have to step back and choose what is most important at to you and let the rest go.

    Great vlog thank you both. wife and I are considering an upgrading our narrowboat as we are in process of selling our home and moving onto the cut permanent. I liked the comments regarding cassette toilet in preference to pump out. we currently have a pump out but have been thinking our next boat would be better if we had a cassette toilet. Our reasoning is for the winter stoppage!. if the cut freezes its easier to address cassettes than move boat for pump out as well as the cost saving.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Robert!.
      Yeah, pretty much one of the considerations we had too. We'll have two cassettes (just in case) and then there are the cost savings of pumping out. It all adds up to a good chunk of our budget!

    I'm an old farmer (74) in Texas and because of the Virus, I stay in the house too much and surf TH-cam. Now, here is my question. The water tank on a narrow boat concerns me. I just saw a video where the owner cleaned rust, corrosion, scale, and crud from the water tank and then coated it. Immediately, I knew I would want a polyethylene tank because I would never want to recoat the water tank that was made of coated raw steel. Please tell me your thoughts. And yes, you guys are quite entertaining. And I love the dog.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some boats use the skin of the boat to form the water tank and this does rust if not treated properly. A lot of boats (including ours) have a stainless steel tank which will last longer than a polyethylene tank for water use 👍🏻

    Fantastic well done the two of you. A couple of questions:- at one stage you wanted to have glass windows over the side hatches but looks like they went overboard!!! Secondly I see that you use lead acid batteries. Wondering why did you chose them over lithium? Cheers Ron

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron 👋
      We're still having the inner glass doors on the hatches, we just wanted to see how practical they would be before we commissioned them. We actually have a set of AGM batteries. Lithium are good but we are waiting to see if Carbon batteries will be a better option for us in a couple of years.

    Excellent vlogs guys. A question about your boat draft and ballast;
    1. What is the total weight of your boat (in a livable state with supplies) with ballast, and without ballast?
    2. What type of material have you used for their ballast?
    3. Where is your ballast along the hull length of the boat?
    4. What is the depth of your boat at the stern and the bow, with installed ballast?
    Thanks!!!

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Not sure on the total weight. About 16-17 tons.\
      2. Brick.
      3. All along the length.
      4. 2ft 2ins

    Hey @Foxes Afloat, I'm just curious as to what type of accent Collin has? I'm going to take a guess and say Birmingham, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm a 15-year-old living in Australia, I've always wanted to move to the UK and live on a narrowboat ever since I came to the UK for a holiday when I was 10. These were excellent questions. We eventually want to own a Narrowboat. And we are definitely buying a new build customized Narrowboat. The research so far with the amenities we require the price is going to be in the @$150,000 or more range. One “roadblock” we have come across is we will be using the boat during prime summer cruising, the temperature inside cabin gets quite hot, we want it cool especially during sleeping. We were hoping for some sort of center air conditioning system? We also want a water purifying system from the stainless steel tank to the Kitchen & bathroom faucets. Everyone tells us those two amenities are not possible. What are your thoughts?

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're both possible, but narrowboat design also involves a degree of compromise. You can only generate and store a certain amount of power. How you use it dictates what gadgets you can install 👍🏻

    Hi guys! Can I just say that Silver Fox is probably the nicest looking narrow boat I’ve seen, she’s just gorgeous. When you first visited Bickerstaffes yard you spoke at length about the way they don’t build their boats to order as such, they build them and then if you like it you can buy it. How did this work out with your boat?

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Yeah, that's right. Because we're willing to be Guinea Pigs for some new additions to the boat, and because we are broadcasting the build progress on here, they've allowed us to be first in line for Silver Fox. Normally, they build then sell.

  • @leedesigner1977
    @leedesigner1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think Shaun had a point, I’m guessing he thinks it was easier last time because it sounds like the process was ...’we just did it’ without a huge amount of thought. As this time, you have both had to work hard in finding what you want. Lots of time and effort. Fun and exciting as it is, it is still time consuming and drawn out. Plus Colin has had quite a lot of anxiety throughout this new process. So I think this time round has been more beneficial to Colin, as he’s been able to discover himself a bit more. Yet again, it’s all good, but as we all know discovering about ourselves is a tough process. I maybe completely wrong, but that’s how I see it 😊

      Linda and I are going down the Cinderella route. Then again, Hunky Dory isn't cost restrictive for us. And we're very fortunate in that respect. And as far as ongoing costs are concerned, I've estimated for Linda and I that the yearly cost including maintenance will be around £365. Importantly, indeed the overriding factor was convenience, pardon the euphemism.

    About Bob’s question on prices (and yes, I chuckled at the placing of the S. Colin!): is the NB market a place where one can ‘haggle’ or negotiate on price. For example, when you say some places with a good reputation clearly add a premium for the name, is it feasible to ask for a bit of a discount, do you think? Loving the blogs and the process of catching up......Thanks! Hollers.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Hollers 👋
      That's a really complicated question to answer.
      There's always a degree of negotiation, but more so in the used market than on new boats. With a bespoke order, or an off-the-peg new boat the margins are generally pretty slim for the builder so there's not usually much room to haggle with. Saying that, shopping around will give you a better idea on value for money. As long as you research what you're pricing up, you'll have a better idea whether you're getting a good deal or not.

    • @davehollingworth5537
      @davehollingworth5537 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for taking the time and due consideration to answer - it's very useful and much appreciated. When that lottery win comes and i'm ready to buy a narrowboat, ideally bespoke I suppose, all this information will be invaluable. Thanks again.

    From watching the build, Silver Fox has a hull and superstructure built mainly of steel. What other options do you find in new Narrowboats? Wood, fiberglass, aluminum? Any pluses or minuses?

      Traditionally, just steel

    Hi Shaun and Colin, when you both decided to sell your house and have a more relaxed lifestyle with less stress, what was your primary objective financially, to be debt free or have spare cash to enable you to live more freely? Will a brand new boat facilitate this? Cheers. ✨

      Hi David,
      Our primary objective was to be debt free. We will still be working, albeit drastically fewer hours, and we'll have slightly less disposable income than we do now, but it will be manageable. Yes, buying the new boat will facilitate this :)

    Shawn why no glass of wine? Then it may have been because you were not at “home”. Did Otis get a say on the new boat? What would be the major change in the new boat from Silver Fox 1?

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No real major changes.

      I always thought that Silver Fox 1 was a beautiful narrow boat. You did such a wonderful job putting it together it would be hard to improve on it. Cheers

      Hi Ray. You are right! It is indeed a rack 👍🏻

      ray 1 It's the Grundtal dish drying rack from IKEA sans the white plastic water collector. They don't make it anymore, or more properly, it's not available in the states at IKEA, although there are some floating around eBay and Chinese knock offs available via Amazon.

    I had to laugh at your cheap vs expensive analogy... I have always called Chanel - Canal.
    Apologies in advance if you end up blooping by saying Canal instead of Chanel, or vice versa! You popped up on my TH-cam and I'm watching from the start so I'm guessing it'll be a while before I see it if you do...

    Will you continue to work on the boat? If you don't mine me asking what background are you both from? as the videos are very creative!

      Hey. Yeah, we will be working when we live on our boat. I (Colin) work as a personal trainer and also work in the media. Shaun is a driver :)

    I think choice can get out of hand. For instance I hate walking into a supermarket to confronted by 100 x 7 feet of cereals. I have the US cable network because there are so many channels, also all of the crap and it's hard to find anything worth watching or that won't liquidise my brain. I think the boat choice thing would drive me a little potty. E.G., what kind of potty to have!!

      Ha ha! What a brilliant analogy 😂 It’s been an interesting few months separating the opinions from fact but we’re happy with our choice. We also have hundreds of TV channels but usually nothing decent to watch 😂 Thank you for commenting 👍🏻

    Hope it's not to late to ask a question on this 2 and a half year old blog. How come you didn't get the automated system you liked on your boat? At least I don't think you did, I'm not all the way through your build yet.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve. Basically, it was very expensive and didn't really offer value for money. The information is nice to look at on a screen but it didn't offer that much of a benefit to us. The money was better spent on other things 👍🏻

    So everything I am reading about cassette toilets is you have to dump them every 2 days. Sounds like a pain to me. True or not true?

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every two days? Nah, once a week for the two of us.
