How To Make Resin Bracelets

- Learn how to create your own copper cuff bracelet, hand painted with alcohol ink and sealed with a thin coat of epoxy resin. Artist Sue Board prefers working with copper blanks because they're malleable to bend into a cuff shape. A base coat of white, glossy primer provides the same effect as yupo paper, allowing the alcohol ink to maintain its bright color. ArtResin's crystal clear finish brings the jewelry to life, providing a shiny, protective coating. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art with an intense depth of color and a look reminiscent of stained glass.

OMG this is terrific! My mom has a supply of alcohol inks. I'm pricing the cuff blanks and they're fairly reasonable, a dozen 1/2 inch on Etsy for $26. I have three teenage nieces and this would be the perfect craft for us to do together. An 8 oz. kit of Art Resin at Hobby Lobby is about $28.

I know alcohol inks fade with uv exposure, and Art Resin is the best at helping prevent that, but should you take any precautions to help the colors stay vibrant? What length of time(months,years) do the pieces tend to last? Thanks you for the tutorials and for giving me more ways to use Art Resin.
Alcohol inks vary greatly in intensity from brand to brand. Some will change color when they are dropped into resin, others can fade very quickly. Ours are highly saturated and provide an intense color and won't change when it drops into resin. It has a lightfast rating between 4-6 which is very good.
All alcohol ink is dye based ( as opposed to a pigment based colorant like ResinTint ) so you'll want to keep it out of direct sunlight to help prevent fading.

You can cut your own copper like Sue does, or make it super simple and just order online--google search "copper bracelet blanks". You will find different widths available based on your preference.

Hi Regina, I'm not sure what specific brand of primer was used, however we'd recommend using a spray paint/primer that is suitable for use over metal with a smooth gloss finish to allow the alcohol ink to move easily once applied.

These were done on 18 gauge copper. Primer is a white glossy spray paint suitable for use over metal.

@@fullajoyy I'm not sure exactly what brand of primer Sue uses, but inquire at your hardware store or paint store- find a spray paint that has a gloss finish and can be used over metal. The gloss finish makes it easier for the alcohol ink to move on.

Im unsure as Sue cut these herself but there are standard sizes at your local craft store :)
May I ask how you clean the paintbrush after using it with alcohol ink and raisin ?
Hi Shailja, most times brushes used in resin are bound for the trash but small ones like these may be able to be cleaned. You can try soaking in isopropyl alcohol to clean them out and wiping on paper towel.

Btw....I'm NOT a fan of using the word "eyeball" in relation to measuring 2 part epoxy resin. That could be disastrous for a beginner to resin!!! Also resin should be stirred in the same direction for its mixing process, otherwise it heats up WAY too fast, cutting your designing time to almost nothing. That's just me tho....🤷♀️
You can use a glossy primer or glossy paint that is suitable for use over metal. For this effect you do need to use alcohol inks, but try something else and maybe you'll create something just as fabulous!

I’ve waited 12 hours for the resin on the bracelets to cure before bending them. But they still seem to be tacky and my fingerprints show on the resin. How much longer do you think I should wait. They’re tacky
ArtResin takes about 24 hours to feel cured to the touch and 72 hours to reach a full cure.
Prime with what?
You can use a white glossy spray paint, one that works over metal. The secret is to have a glossy smooth surface so the alcohol ink flows easily overtop.

Yes, after the first bend, you can do the other final adjustments by hand.

Alcohol ink fades in pieces, it would work if they were kept out light. I wish it would not fade as it makes beautiful designs
It is true that in general inks are not as light fast as other pigments. You can use a UV protectant sealer to help protect the colours before sealing with ArtResin.
