  • Hearing this perspective from a Nigerian living in Ghana was definitely eye-opening. You may hear about the discord between Ghanaians and Nigerians, here's the backstory behind it.

It has nothing to do with what happened in 1985. Most Ghanaians don’t even remember this incident. Even British people who colonized Ghana and with its atrocities can still find suitable places to rent.
It is just love and vibe between Ghanaians and Nigerians, and may be a few bad tenants from Nigeria who have created a reputation problem for most Nigerians. Anyway, this is more a class problem because rich Nigerians have no problem renting or buying properties in Ghana. It is only the lower classes and struggling youth, but then poor Ghanaians also struggle to find suitable accommodation.

That's not the reason. That incident is passed and gone. The reasons a Ghanaian landlord will hesitate to rent to a Nigerian is more stereotypical. There are bad nuts everywhere and you know what they say about one bad nut. There are many stories of them not keeping contract. Two people will come and rent but more and more keep joining them over time sharing the same tiny space. There is also the problem of leaving the place in a worse condition than when they rented. When they want to move they will stop paying rent and come up with excuses to give them more time to pay up and this can go on for about 3 months. When they move out too they don't inform you. They will leave behind some useless property so as to create the impression they are still around. This may not be the case for everyone of them but because of the few who have put up a bad reputation most Ghanaians are cautious. It's rather unfortunate that many innocent ones have to pay the price sometimes because truth be told I've met many lovely and helpful Nigerians too.

My friend stop ranting, my neighbor recently rented his apartment to a Nigerian because he’s got a job outside Accra. He rented it to just one person and the guy brought in 7 other Nigerians to live with him and they pay rent to him without the owner’s knowledge. The guy started misbehaving and the owner wanted him out of the apartment. It tuned into a court case because the man gave the apartment without any agent involved. Now he has sworn that he will never rent his apartment to a Nigerian ever again. Now this Nigerian has blocked other Nigerians chances of getting a decent apartment to live in here. In this situation who do you blame.

Young woman, stop the insincerity. That is not why some Ghanaians don't want to rent their homes or apartments to Nigerians. Crime by some of these young Nigerian guys is the reason people are wary of renting their houses out to them.
There are Hausa and Yoruba people who are virtually Ghanaians now. They've lived all their lives in Ghana. Most of the homes in Accra Newtown or legos town today were built by yorubas. Hausa is the lingua franka in migrant communities in Ghana all because of the migration of Nigeria's Hausa long before independence.
Why is it so difficult for some of you to be honest? People are simply trying to stay away from trouble with the law. The insincerity on these streets is too much.
The funny thing is that, upon all these complaints and insults they rain on Ghanaians, the rate at which they're trooping into this country at the moment hasn't happened before. You'll see those young guys in every corner these days. God is my witness, a bunch of them occupy a whole house adjacent to us. You don't see them in any gainful employment. They ensconce themselves indoors all day. Only God knows what they're up to.
Any Nigerian who lives in Ghana and abides by the laws of Ghana has nothing to worry about. It is a certain calibre of Nigerians, who think money must be made no matter how foul the means, who are putting Ghanaians on their guard at the moment. Otherwise, there's a long history of trade and coexistence either in Ghana or Nigeria between the two, in spite of the twin episodes of expulsion.

As a Ghanaian living in Accra, and lived closer to universities campuses, where a lot of Nigerian students lived, i can say her reason is totally false. I have lived in the same apartment building with Nigerians the main reason is the abuse they they take their neighborhood through. One person rents and before you can say jack, they turn into 10 people, loud music and general indiscipline and the threat of crime. Most landlord like to rent to them because they can pay high rent till they start they usual shenanigans and then they are ejected. Ghanaians may be the only people who love Nigerians but they are not easy to live with. I personally like how they are reasonable in retail unlike Ghanaians. For that 1980s thing, i have never heard any Ghanaian make issue out of it only Nigerians. Guys get over it and be law abiding in other's countries.

And for the record most of the ppl don’t even know this story, it’s the elders that went through it and experienced it.
Why would those ppl that have that experience with you treat you nice or give you a place to stay when you did not and killed them in that process of driving them out of Nigeria?
What South African did was small compare to what Nigerians did to Ghanaians.
In 20 years it will die down, it will only be based on what the nee generation think feel and has experience from the Nigerian, if it’s still a negative experience then it will still be difficult to rent.

Dear, a lot is going on in Ghana now with some Nigerians. We wish not to say but we are saying it cos it has gotten to the level of Ghanaians loosing lives. Some Nigerians are kidnapping and killing Ghanaian children. Listen to this, Around 2013 in one of the Ghanaian Universities, A NIGERIAN STUDENT WAS MURDERED BY ANOTHER NIGERIAN STUDENT. the one who was murdered was a governor's son. And the killer was a fellow Nigerian student the governor's son helped by borrowing him money to pay his fees. Because the guy didn't want to pay, he killed the governor's son. Dear, if a Nigerian can do this to his fellow Nigerian in Ghana, what can't he do to a Ghanaian? Or his landlord?
It's difficult but the narrative must change. This is where the reputation issue comes in. We hope for a positive change though.

One used to teach in my cousin’s school and my aunt even had to engage him, Mr. Koffi for my cousin’s home lesson teacher. It’s Buhari and Idiagbon’s military regime that brought the Ghana must go madness then. But even till date some Ghanaians live freely in Nigeria with no harassment, intimidation or discrimination.

Apparently even sending people into a civil war. None if those 3 episodes should have happened imho .
You have to ask yourself why you are minimising that.
Is there a possibility that you will always lean to a version which paints Nigerians as the aggressor rather than the retaliator?
Basically, starting the story from the middle... "And the Indians shot their arrows" type of set up?
This results in choosing a "victim" by activity omitting or minimising other facts.

The Nigerian reputation follows them everywhere they go in the world, unfortunately. In general, they are hard workers and overachievers tho, but the bad stuff follows them everywhere. Everyone is scared of them!

@@waynebaker5720Why is it that only Nigerians are told this?
The black Americans that have a bad reputation does anyone task "the good ones" with the duty to change the overall narrative ? Or with Jamaican yardies or any other group? What is this new responsibility put on individuals who are honest and hardworking to change a narrative beyond actually being evidence of the opposite? They are already doing that.
The honest and hardworking Nigerians are evidence to the contrary of the negative stereotypes but people refuse to let that affect their general reputation/perception anyway. That is the difference.
Instead of saying "oh not all Nigerians are like that" with an actual Nigerian. showing good traits before them as evidence .
They rather say "oh you're not like a Nigerian .
It is actually the people holding the perception that refuse to allow room or change in it when they meet the opposite.
It is the danger of the single story people refuse others to be anything other than negative in their eyes irrespective of the contrary they may experience.
Now whose responsibility is it to change that?

If people refusevti rentbto a Nigerian it stands to reason that the few who get the house will have many people there, because others are unable to get accommodation .
It's the same with the recent immigrant Polish, Indians and Chinese in the UK, its very common to see many in one house. Not only to bring down costs but also because some landlords prefer not to rent to them.
When I lived in Australia landlords did not like to rent to the Irish.

Sadly, there are no elders around to teach them the right information, so they don't have much to rely on for right info about anything, and thanks to their unfortunate distraction of the internet/social media etc., they lost on the gift of the richness of learning, the way we were fortunate enough to have our elders around, to sit with us and spend time with us to teach us about everything.
