  • What is the real difference between solar passive homes and passive house homes. These strategies are sometimes confused. The priority should always be passive house! We break down the differences between the two terms that are used to describe high-performance construction practices. #solarpassive #passivehaus #buildingperformance

One is a set of principles, and the other is a business.
Passive Solar is a set of basic scientific principles incorporated into house design to make a less energy consumptive home. Any single house may utilize dIfferent principles and/or techniques based on the heating and cooling needs in the local climate and design preferences. In practice, because each house is a unique design it is difficult for the average homeowner or builder to guarantee the energy performance of the home. Passive House Is the latest incarnation of Passive Solar with differences:
    - It is a company and a business that trains and certifies builders and homes.
    - High emphasis on air tightness and insulation. This ensures highest possibility performance even when the home doesn’t have optimal sun exposure.

So my takeaway from what Joseph says is that solar passive introduces more variables, some of which can be undesirable, but passive house design takes advantage of mechanisation to even out the bumps? Really enjoying your channel too. Learning heaps.

Passive house design is predictable, not only due to mechanical ventilation but also because of building envelope performance.

Don't be confused. The choice here is about how much control you wanted to have on the indoor environment. Passive solar is great, if you can accommodate a wider range of conditions. You know everyone has a different preference of "Comfort". All we trying to convey is the message that you have more control with a passive house where passive solar can improve the indoor condition for sure but not guarantee the level of comfort you are going to get. especially during heat wave.

Are passive homes suitable for warmer climates, like Northern NSW for example? Since the PH design was originally for Germany and much cooler climates.

Kyle Naeff Yes, of course. Different considerations are made for the different climates a passive house may be built. 👍🏻
