He’s just about my favorite. My favorite is actually Mall Tours who does Florida malls and the southeast which is my neck of the woods. But NorthCdogg is a close second because he covers the history of a mall including pictures of its glory days. I don’t care for some better known dead mallers like Sal and Ace for different reasons. Sal is a bit too weird with showing retro scenes like Dionne Warwick and her psychic infomercials which really has nothing to do with the mall. And Ace typically presents his dead mall videos very down, dark and depressing with depressing, dark music. I’m more about celebrating what once was instead of crying in my beer about it. NorthCdogg presents a good balance. But Mall Tours is my favorite because she has a pleasant female voice and light relaxing music.

I live in Escanaba. The mall is finally coming along. In the old Shopko there is a new L&M fleet supply store. Dunham has moved to the other side of the mall and quadrupled their size. A shoe sensation, Habor Freight, Hobby Lobby and Marshall's has moved in all in the last 5 years. Still nothing like it was when I was a kid, but the best it has been since 2000.

This video made me smile. You're giving us yoopers some love! When I was a teen, this plaza mall used to be buzzing! It was always packed! Now it's a ghost town. "Wellspring" used to be Hallmark too. Everyone always stopped at Hallmark before heading into Shopko. Ahh those were the days.

Hey welcome to escanaba, my hometown! I wish I would've found your channel sooner, I could've given you a tour of the plaza. I've been going there since the early 80s when I was a kid. Dunham's is in the original Shopko. They just rebuilt that. All of the new stores are now on the outside and not connected inside. So I don't know how the interior stores are staying open. Lots of memories there!
You must've filmed this a year ago cuz the food court and everything past that will I'd now Dunham's. Only accessable from the outside .
The original Shopko was where the food court is, all the way to the wall of the new Shopko, where l and m fleet is now.

I live in Escanaba, I'm young, only 14, so i wasnt able to experience the greatness it once was. I remember walking in there as a kid and being super excited about going to the little model train layout, or going to pine wood derby races with my dad. I remember the food court before it got torn out and it was amazing. I wish I was old enough to see it thrive, back in its prime!

  • @DK20353

I'm old enough to remember the original iteration of this place. As a kid living in the middle of nowhere, we would go "to town" on the weekend and Delta Plaza felt like a piece of the big city to me. I was enthralled with the big fountain that was in the center of the hall right in front of the old location of Maurice's (cannot believe they're still there!). I remember the day JCPenney opened around 1985… so slick and urban for us backwoods people! They had white tile floors and beautiful displays, unlike the previous Penney's location downtown which was old and dark. Some of the other stores I remember were Team Electronics next to Woolworth, Merle Norman, Vogue (my favorite but couldn't afford to shop there much), and later, a bookstore where I would spend hours. Thanks for the nostalgia!

every time i went to this mall it felt like a limal space out of time. even when it was almost empty when i was in highschool, there was nothing like sitting in the food court with all the plants and neon. i used to go to wellspring when they were in the mall, and then bum arround after the service. there used to be a bookstore where anytime fitness is now that i loved as a kid. thy alwasy had stuffed animals on top of the shelves and on the counters, it was such a nice store before it closed. it breaks my heart to see it the way it is now. however, things have gotten a bit better with new stores moving in. part of the reason stores didn't was because the owners of the mall made renting out a space incredibly expensive, and there's just not enough people here to give the stores enough revenue to afford it. as of now, they filled the area where shopko used to be with L and M, we have a harbor freight, a marshalls, and a five below is coming too. i hope you got time to stop at the bowl-a-rama next door to the mall, it's also a very lost in time 80's vibe. awesome video, i loved watching this and basking in the nostalgia of the older pictures you shared.

Reminds me of some of the malls in my home town. Population is only 5000 but it used to be closer to 10,000, during the mining era two indoor malls were built, today they are both completlet empty and cavernous, still with their original brown tiles, sadly the last neons were removed just this year😢

I really loved coming to the mall here when I was younger, I loved the Jo Ann Fabrics that was in it, and there was also a lovely little bookstore in there that always smelled of warm tobacco. My favorite thing was that little shut off train track display that I begged my Dad to put in the money so I could watch it go around.
It was one of my favorite places to go when in town, and I'm just super sad to just see a husk of what once was taking up all the space there. But the new Fleet Farm they put in the old Shopko is kinda nice, and I like the Dunham's Sports too, but it's just not the same, and I wish I was born sooner so I could have seen/experienced the food court to its fullest.

I'm an Escanaba resident. yes it was really awesome in the early 90's. the arcade was the best. I think what doomed these small malls was the huge shift in the way people shopped. Big box stores like Walmart came to town, followed closely by Internet stores like Amazon. Also you mentioned how all the stores that did come in or moved within the mall all wanted stand alone front facing shops. nobody wants to share space or compete with people being able to walk around browsing different shops. Thats what a mall was all about. gone are the days of getting a few items at each shop. the mall shopping experience is a far better experience for the customer. but business's don't want that kind of competition.

    • @bigdaddyrat7854
      @bigdaddyrat7854 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm old enough to remember Escanaba before the Mall and how it was Main Street that was bustling and that when the Mall came it killed main street, you could get everything at the mall, one stop shopping, kind of like how now you can get everything from Amazon and have it delivered. I kind of miss the bustling downtown with hardly a closed shop and all the stores full of people, The Delft and Michigan Theatres open every afternoon and evening and that little popcorn wagon on the corner of Ludington and n.9th St... please, forgive the musings of an old man.
If you are interested there are historical documentary films at the Marquette historical society depicting Escanaba about 1900.

Carpeted malls where the sound is deadened always gave me a feeling of someone wrapping me in a wool blanket. RE Delta's future: Anchorless and with the competition of Walmart, Meijer , and Menards down the block at best it'll just become a strip center with Dunhams (which I don't know how they stay in business), Anytime fitness and maybe a nail salon.. It's all very sad in a way , I bet the old folks in metro Escanaba miss the warm spot to mall walk in the frigid UP winters and remember the fond old days of a happening place to buy a Holiday greeting card or some ready to assembly furniture from Shopko to store their extra beer or ammo on..

Delta Plaza could have a future if Michigan had a more responsible government and was focused on bringing new industry to the UP of Michigan. The main hope this mall has is to start over from its roots with mostly local business owners. Maybe try to bring in a Lowe’s or Home Depot as an anchor or even a Walmart. Only if the economy improves there can you get ambitious and bring in a Macy’s or Dillards. For now it should focus on serving lower income blue collar customers because that’s likely the make up of people living there. Lower income blue collar people need only 3 types of stores. A Walmart type store, a hardware store, and a grocery store.

I always found it interesting that the upper peninsula is part of Michigan, it seems so isolated from the rest of Michigan, it would seem more natural to be part of Wisconsin.

I live close to Esky and the mall has definitely been given some life because of an L&M moving where shopko was, but it's still unfortunately really dead :( I remember visiting when I was a kid and the food courts actually had people in them :(

There is a little hope for the mall, Dunhams moved to the back and we're getting a 5 below soon as well, but I don't know how long they'll last.

@@haydenmetzger2398 It feels like its had a turnover in management, for the decades the place was more or less stagnant, more change in the past 2 years than in the 20 years prior imo. Time will tell if its good change

All I figured that was in the U.P. of Michigan was forest and moose as well. No way would I have thought that a real mall actually could have existed there. Just forest loggers and sportsmen. And cold as heyall most of the time. You know, a place most people would not want to live(Actually, that could be said for the entire state of Michigan).
