    Hi George , I watched a video of yours last week and you said to plant your tree ferns in a garden as they soon fill up the pots with roots , so we did , it took a lot of effort as it was in a Huge pot and was so heavy , anyhow just to say Thankyou very much because I’m so pleased as it looks much better in its new bed and is doing very well so far , fingers crossed,🤞 and we’ve counted 10 new fronds . Do Thankyou again and I like your videos , they are very informative . Thanks George , please do a lot more videos for us 👍😁

    My personal choices for the creation of my more safe to say palm garden is the addition of 2 trachycarpus f. Palms, 1 chamaerops humilis, 1 green cordyline, a yucca rostrata and a cane yucca. I have already established from last year 1 washingtonia, 2 varieties of Cannas a huge lemon tree and 1 musa basjoo. I think it will do great. Cheers from North Greece zone 9a-b.

  • @elana137

    So I've got two different palms in my back garden, one with big wide leaves and another one with thin spiny leaves. I wonder if it's going to move the ground and other plants around it? I have a dry and wet area too because one part of the garden doesn't get enough of the waste water I use.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Elana, generally palms are quite tolerant of other plants being close to them so I wouldn’t worry. A high plant density can dry the soil out quicker though but it’s all about the plants you use. I guess for you prioritising plants that need additional water for the areas that get your waste water is essential to keep them happy, anywhere else and they have to be tough!

  • @jimbailey3705
    @jimbailey3705 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are soooo right about only choosing a limited number of plant species for visual impact - in a small garden especially. Sigh. Of course I can’t stick to that, but I do really want to. You reminded me why it is important - I’m just such a plant hoarder though. But I did also plant some things in the wrong place (despite waiting a year to get to know this knew garden! You can’t really get to know it if you aren’t planting plants you care about in it!!!). So... lots of replanting this year. I’ll try to group things and see if I can make the garden look more coherent!
    I think your vid also reminded me that there is a key hardy, evergreen exotic that I want as a tall anchor plant. It’s just not something I could afford last year. Maybe this year I just need to go for it and order one from hardy palms or big plant nursery. It would make a huge difference to have some vertical interest in the garden. There’s only one tree in the garden! And it’s not tropical (it’s an evergreen and I won’t get rid of until there’s some other vertical interest in the garden, or unless I finally manage to make it look nicer by completing the cloud pruning I started last year, but had to give up on as birds were starting to nest in the tree ;) ).

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’re all plant hoarders Jim, it’s part of the game! It takes a lot of restraint to pull off an amazing design and whilst I could work towards that with a design for somebody else, not in my own garden! I’ve had to move a few bits too, don’t worry about that. Improving and adjusting is part of the process. What’s the tall hardy plant you’re looking at getting?

    • @jimbailey3705
      @jimbailey3705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeorgesJungleGarden I’m thinking a 7/8 ft Multi trunk Cordyline Australis. I’m still a beginner and I shouldn’t be able to screw that up and it’s the least expensive tall exotic and definitely grows where I live. This garden isn’t my forever garden (next house will be!) and it is sort of starting to dawn on me that i might be able to just keep these large palms in pots... would be super interesting for people like me to know a bit about your experiences with keeping big exotics alive in pots!

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimbailey3705 There’ll be a video up in the morning you’ll hopefully find interesting then! As for the cordylines, as long as they’re a decent price then go for it. They’re a plant I’d personally buy small but one of my friends has just bought some tall multi trunked examples and they do look cool straight away. Big palms will definitely be happy in large pots for a few years with the right care.

    • @jimbailey3705
      @jimbailey3705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeorgesJungleGarden ooooh! Looking forward to it!
      And i do understand.... i bought some small ones, but well... everything in my garden is small. My small/medium-sized cordylines and trachycarpus just don’t really make the impact I crave. I looked at the prices of large Dicksonia Antarctica, trachycarpus fortunei, and cordyline australis. If money were no problem, I’d obviously get the tree fern as they are so slow growing, it just makes the most sense to get those as large as i can! I can’t get a tiny one and just hope it will grow quickly! And they look SO COOL!
      But... the impactful cordylines are actually affordable.
      Could be easier to justify spending more money though, if I knew I could take the plant with me when I move again... 🤔.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimbailey3705 I completely understand and I’m with you 100%, the tree fern would be my choice of investment too and you could take it with you. The cordylines are cheaper but if planted out, they don’t usually transplant well if you dug them up again. A different way of looking at it, but have you considered maybe some bananas, Arundo Donax reeds, Miscanthus grasses, Fargesia bamboos, Tetrapanax, coppicing a Paulownia... there’s a lot of plants that look impressive and quickly give height over 2-3 years without a large investment?

    Great advice that will certainly help me start to plant out the garden this coming Spring/Summer. Would anyone one have any advice on how close to plant a 4ft Trachycarpus Fortunei to the fence in a 1.5 - 2m border? Obviously in a number of years the fronds will be above the fence line, but for now they certainly will not be. I love that Princeps Hybrid it's stunning.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, the Princeps Hybrid is a beauty, I wish you could still pick them up as small - medium plants! Each Fortunei frond / leaf can be 3-4ft long but that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to leave that much space. I’d probably say a couple of feet as a minimum as it will generally focus on growing upwards quickly for the first years but it completely depends on the boundary and whether leaves hanging over the fence would actually be a problem in years to come...

  • @peca1n

    Sorry for asking so many questions but I see in this video you had a lawn. Have you planted palms directly into lawn or do you remove a section of lawn around the palm and create a planting bed?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, it’s no problem at all, ask away! I’ve mainly created beds or borders as the palms are combined with other planting. There will be some closer to the house in the lawn but they’ll have an area of grass cut out around them, I don’t think any plant likes having grass growing right up to it. If you look at my December 2020 tour video you’ll probably see the layout better, there won’t be much grass left in the finished design though.

    We used to grow these so easily in Spain. I had to laugh when you were talking about how big some plants get. We bought several palms in Spain which became enormous. Sadly one of them had palm weevil which devastated it.

      Hi Anna, yes, we’ve had a fair bit of snow this time round! The tree fern and bamboo aren’t ideal in pots long term but for a few years and some careful watering they should be just fine. Interesting, what are you thinking? The black succulents are Aeoniums and very easy, yes. Sorry to hear about the weevil damage, that must have been gutting! Washingtonias and Phoenix palms that you can grow easily in Spain can get massive, yes. It worries me when you see a lot of these potentially the plants in narrow borders or right next to houses...
