  • This is a must have variety. Does well in almost all aspects and has a taste that competes with the best. A mid season Black Madeira.

    i was able to get a much darker skin on my smith like harvey. im still in the northeast. i have them in full sun. at first i was like oh no i got the wrong fig. once i opened it up to taste i knew it was smith. the quality was top notch. they seem to hang very well. i didnt get to much cracking even in rainy weather. this is a great pick ross. thanks.

      it took about 2 seasons to really get the tree ready for good fruiting. up potting and shaping isnt the best time to try to get your trees producing good figs. i thought last year i might be ready but fruit set was to late. i have been picking figs now sept 15ish. the seems like the ideal time for many of my figs. i pick around the rain. if the figs are ot up to amazing eating quality they go to jam making. about to make a 3 kilo batch soon.

    I have tried growing this before in the Las Vegas NV area with unimpressive results. My first tree from Just Fruits and exotics died the first winter I planted it from a fairly large 3 gallon pot I got another the next season and grew it out a couple of years here but it was a slow grower for me. Battaglia is the best green fig I ever grew here. Really likes the heat and very aggressive grower and prolific. Much better than Strawberry Verte in pots here in zone 9a. I am trying Smith again we will see how it does in a couple of years. By the way Ross I am also from Phila.

      Thanks for sharing your results, Giacomo. I bet the weather is better where your at than Philly. Enjoy!

    Hi Ross, I just received a Smith. Could you do a video on different varieties and when you think they taste best. What color they should be and should they dry on tree or not and one with a list of trees that you think would do good in hot humid climates. Talk about ones with open eyes and closed eyes and ones that need a wasp and is there anyway around that? I want a Unk P but it needs a wasp. Thanks so much Ross. Jan from Hot/Humid Florida zone9B.

    The shape of a fig leaf can vary so much on the same plant in my experience.
    I have a White Marseilles that has atleast 3 different types of leaf this year, none of which look like the leaf shape last yr, so i def agree thats not the most reliable indicator.

    I was thinking about biding in your Smith but you just said don’t plant it in the ground cause it’s not hardy. I almost decided this was the fig for me cause I’m in the Deep South East

      It'll do great in a zone 8. It's a southern fig actually.

    I get very few figs due to animals beating me to the harvest. I just bought fruit cover bags so now the thieves just mush them up and drop them on the ground. Also have problems with fire ants on the fruit. Any suggestions?

      if you would have to choose from those two which one you would go for?
      Thank you!

    I live in the PNW, what do you think of grafting a smith to a DK, I have both

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DK is great in the PNW. Graft smith onto something else.
