    LineageOS developer relations manager here - we accidentally put the light mode QS item in the changelog - I will go remove that!
    We opted not to bring it back this go around because when merging monthly patches, it massively conflicted each and every month, especially in the quarterly releases.
    It held up every months security bulletin, so we opted to not bring it forward - if someone wants to port the feature in a less intrusive manner somehow (if even possible) we are ore than willing to review it!

      You shouldn't expect any security. Especially since the Pixel 3 hasn't gotten a proper firmware update in years.
      Many aftermarket OSes, besides weakening the security model in some way, like Lineage requiring an unlocked bootloader, which disables verified boot.
      They also implement a lot of hacks to get the device functioning on an Android release it was never designed to run on to work around numerous regressions, some of which definitely cause security holes that the maintainer may not know about.
      Upgrading to a recently support device like the Pixel 8a should be a priority, if you want proper security.

    • @thosko98
      @thosko98 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rythmater Still better security than running the stock ROM to be fair. For an unlocked bootloader to matter the hacker needs physical access to the phone. I think Graphene OS allows relocking the bootloader once it's been installed, so if you go that route it's a nonissue.

    Custom ROMs will make more and more sense in the near future as phone's hardware are getting good and people are holding their phone's longer. Since most companies provide 3-4 years of software update. It makes sense to install custom ROMs for better security updates and smooth experience.

    It's nice seeing them pushed out the a14 of lineageOS but sadly the official devices supported are even lesser now, I jumped to PixelOS or PixelExperience just because my devices got dropped or discontinued from the devs, despite the hardware is still fairly new. I know there are unofficial builds but they are often unstable from my past experience. I wish more contributors join the project.
    Also anyone who knows which magisk module to enable Google Pay on unlocked BL devices? I tried all the latest and greatest available SafetyNet fix but they are not working.

    If you're experiencing QS panel not being in light mode at all and you need it to be in light mode then you can use AOSP/PixelXpert mods or better QS (both require root with magisk, I think one of them requires shizuko/shizuku too)

      @pirateluffy01 in case you have noticed they are taking baby steps to kill them or to be more precise for people to stop using them cos that way they can then say that they didn't, people just lost interest in them, every week they are coming up with something new to make it harder to use them, from the top of my head, they are blocking fingerprints (we need to always be changing then and this won't last forever, once they are all gone it's basically over), the devices were uncertified when ever a specific word was detected in a string of the kernel, and more recently rooted devices can't use RCS but this are only the ones that I can remember cos I am/was affected by them

    LineageOS isn't good just because of extended lifespan, it's good because by default it removes the worse spyware from Android, called google apps and google services. But Graphene OS is even better because of it's hardened security and focus on privacy. Reject big tech corpos from devices as critical for most people as a smartphone that's always near you.

    Just installed Lineage OS 21 for the first time on my old Moto X4. I decided not to root it first, and I did end up sideloading one of the Google app packages so I could access the Play Store. So far so good. It seems stable and pretty smooth, although the adaptive brightness has been a little finicky. As far as the Lineage Apps go, I'm using the Calculator and Contacts, but for everything else I'm sticking with Google apps. (One item you omitted from your review was the Lineage calendar app, and I'd be interested to know your experience using it). I have not had the 2 tone quick settings problem, and my volume sidebar still comes from the right side. A bit late, but it looks like the latest version for that tablet is Lineage OS 20. You can find it by searching for "LineageOS gtowifi"

    I hope the FTC goes after Google about the Play Integrity API. That's the one thing stopping me from using lineageos. I don't want to randomly have features disabled and have apps crash / not install because the bootloader isn't locked.

    While lineage is great I don't undertand why they need their own browser. It's extra dev time that could be used to improve the rest of the OS and the camera. Just ship Firefox as the default and be done with it. Same with the calculator- their are FOSS calculators and other apps that could be shipped as the default apps, giving the devs time to focus on the core OS.

    • @quintus3236
      @quintus3236 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I imagine they do it to ensure that old devices don't struggle to perform basic tasks. The point of the browser isn't to provide an experience that rivals the others. I think it's to provide an experience that's just good enough until the user installs their own desired browser.

    • @godofredo0409
      @godofredo0409 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Use your head. LineageOS supports multiple devices.
      some devices could not support Firefox or whatever, especially old devices.
      LineageOS is entirely a different OS and so it needs its own "identity"
