Alternative Public Clouds - are they just wishful thinking?
Are there really any viable alternative public clouds?
If yes, what are they and what kind of cloud services do they offer?
Can they stand a chance against the big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, Google)?
What distinguishes these niche, local players from the big 3 - price, services, customer focus?
What chance do such vendors have against the big 3, when something new (like Generative AI) hits the headlines and becomes popular and in high demand?
How quickly can they pivot to meet such demand?
Will their services be enough to attract customers to use them, instead of the big 3?
When they compete with the big 3, what do they compete on - price, locality, sovereignty,
All these and a great deal more are good questions! We attempt to answer some and we find that Alternative Public Clouds (APCs, to coin a term), still need to find their role in life. It's no good following the trends and then 12/18 months later finally finding a niche and then trying to sell that, when everyone has moved on!
They did this with Kubernetes. The big 3 put out AKS, EKS and GKE. Years later, the APCs said "we don't change for the Kubernetes Control Plane". Now that's admirable, yes. But it's literally YEARS our of date! Everyone now has the right skills and have adopted to the price of the big 3 - paying for the Control Plan in AWS, Azure and GCP is now accepted!!
So, the APCs need to find their feet and role in life - there's so much to exploit that the big 3 don't, such as Cloud Economics, Automation, GenAI in the cloud tools (not just as FMaaS and GPUs), Data Sovereignty, etc.
