Because the last time it happened to Liu Kang since the very first game, it led to disaster. Liu Kang was the very straightforward, sweet, great hearted champion of Earthrealm. And people call him bland (not helped that he has a non-murderous Fatality in the 1st game). This led him to be killed in Deadly Alliance, reinvented as an 'edgier', 'more suffering' version of himself in 9 and then an evil revenant in 10-11. They only got it right in 11 until now as the Fire God. But then, the fandom probably sees this as this is a coming for a new 'first game Liu Kang', just bearing Raiden's name and moveset... Bottom line, we should probably be more appreciative with sweet and great hearted ones instead of just looking at and praising the bad boys only.

Also the romantic relationship with Kitana, which is weird because they kept pulling them away. Its weird that Liu was seen as bland because he's literally superpowered Bruce Lee. The whole "Liu is bland" reminds me of what happened to Mega Man X, who was seen as a bland pacifist, while most people preferred Zero who was edgier and less restrained. Maverick Hunter X, The Irregular Report novel and MMZ series did well to show why X is important, why he fights, how he's not a "bland pacifist" but someone who desires peace but can be a warrior if need be - and what happens when you have an X who's not an actual pacifist. I think the Alternate timeline did well in refocusing on Liu. In both 9 and 11 we saw a Liu who would step to the plate against literally everyone to protect others, even Raiden. And in 1 we see how Liu is opposite to Kronika.

I read some things about Flat Arc characters and I think I got why people thought Liu was boring - because he's a Flat Arc character. Not a Flat Character, Flat Arc. Flat Arc characters have an inner truth, one which gets tested in their journey. Their nature is already "fixed", so they don't have a positive or negative arc (become better or worse). Rather, they become improve in skill and power, and change others around them. For example, Liu has a flat arc, his flat arc influences Kitana to enter a positive arc, and Kitana drags Jade along. Meanwhile, Shao Kahn has an evil flat arc. He makes everyone around him worse, and he will never change (barring a universal reboot like Liu did). My Megaman X comparison was also spot on, because X is also a flat arc character after Megaman X3.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't miss the old raiden. Not only did he have the perfect voice actor but he just felt so much more fleshed out as a character since he'd had so much development.

I feel like it was cheating for Liu Kang to give Raiden the lightning amulet before the tournament, also that Raiden didn't have to train to master it didn't feel right. I would have liked his lightning to be something like Liu Kang's fire abilities in previous timelines, where it was a skill he mastered with years of training.
Didn't really feel like cheating imo. He was up against foes who are naturally stronger than he was before he was even born so he needed the edge. And he did train since he was a kid under Madam Bo. He definitely picked up the pace after he was recruited by Liu Kang. He earned that amulet by beating the other Earthrealm candidates. Honestly I feel like Raiden's skills and abilities from his past life/timeline never left, just in dormant. This seems to be alluded to in the scene in the tea house where he was surprised that he defeated the Lin Kuei jobbers.
What makes you think he “mastered” it? Even then, what makes you think that Liu Kang (the guy infused with the previous Raiden) didn’t help in training him with his powers in the week before the tournament?
i like to think that reason why liu kang gives him the amulet is to keep him in check because of what the powers did to him in previous timeline. *cough* dark raiden.

The problem with new Raiden is not that he's humble and respectful. Liu Kang was humble and respectful in previous games (except for X, but that game's plot is very bad) and he was one of the best characters. And comapring these two characters further (especially since they basically just exchanged roles) really shows that Raiden is very bleak in MK1. The old Liu Kang was a humble, respectful and somewhat wise Shaolin monk and had natural powers of wielding fire (even hinted that he's Onaga's distant relative in 11, but that's probably not canon). I don't remember much of Shaolin Monks, but in MK11 he acts more composed than Kung Lao and looks as a leader of the duo, stopping Kung Lao's impulsiveness where possible. The Fire God Liu Kang is an upgrade of him both in
I like the change. I liked mighty Raiden but he really did overstep boundaries a lot. I get that new Raiden is a complete 180 to that but *spoiler alert* his arcade ending explains why he's so passive and gives hints of how he might change in the future.
