On July 30, 1945, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Pacific Ocean after delivering components for the atomic bomb that would later be dropped on Hiroshima. The ship sank rapidly, leaving around 900 of its crew stranded in the shark-infested waters.
For four days, the survivors faced dehydration, exposure, and the relentless threat of sharks. Many succumbed to injuries, exhaustion, or dehydration before rescue arrived. The ordeal resulted in one of the worst shark attacks in history, with hundreds of sailors falling victim to the predators.
Only 316 men out of the original crew of nearly 1,200 were eventually rescued. The USS Indianapolis disaster remains a tragic chapter in naval history, highlighting the challenges and perils faced by those who served in the Pacific during World War II. The incident spurred changes in naval procedures and increased awareness of the importance of swift rescue operations in the vast and perilous waters of the open ocean.
