I made a song with the stupidest instrument I own

  • The Korg Monotron is to my knowledge the cheapest analogue synth on the market. It is also a very silly instrument, and as someone who takes their silliness very seriously, I figured I'd put it through its paces as a songwriting tool, both with my pedalboard for an exploratory jam, and in my DAW for the actual songwriting bit.
    Gear used:
    Korg Monotron
    Zoom MS70CDR
    TC Electronic Flashback II
    Bright Onion Pedals tap tempo
    TC Electronic Infinite Sample Sustainer
    Mooer Pitch Box (in loop of the Infinite Sample Sustainer)
    Bright Onion Pedals 1 in/1 out patchbay
    Boss RC-30 Loop Station
    Cockos REAPER

    Welcome to Stupid Gear! About the world's most stupid audio tools. At the first glance, the Korg Monotron is ticking all the boxes!

    Brilliant! A combo of tech and song writing skills, not to mention video production! Well crafted, sir.

    I love this! My entire collection consists of shitty, second-hand gear and low-rent instruments, and it's a part of my whole mission as a musician to make the best music I can out of the worst instruments I can find. I make some of my own with trash!

    Very good video. Love the idea you had of using just the Monotron as the base instrument, passing it through anything you could find to make difference.

    This was great! I just got my first synth of any kind (Moog Mavis), and I want to see how far I can go with a minimal amount of gear... so this video was quite inspiring. Thanks and cheers!

    • @nsiepmann
      @nsiepmann  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh I’m so glad! The Mavis looks great - I’ve been wondering about getting a semimodular synth just to mess around with something totally unfamiliar… Hope you have a great time with it!

    It brings back early memories of me watching Sooty and Sweep! What's that Sweep? Sue not talking to you now for some reason? Sorry I digress.. Thank you for sharing! OH MY Goodness. You're just made me realise something else.. There was a 70's Children's TV programme called 'The Tomorrow People' (Yes they were called programmes back then) The lead sound is identical!

  • @normapadro420

    I have that one, and the space sounding one. I like them. You can change things around. I composed a few songs with it too. They came out really nice. It was a great investment. You can change the sounds once they are corded on the DAW. I like your video. You are very talented.

    "Wibbly"....must be somewhat like "wobbly", but perhaps at a higher pitch....great video and highly inspirational....I've got a Monotron Delay and so much fun!

    • @nsiepmann
      @nsiepmann  ปีที่แล้ว

      New rule: ‘wibbly’ = high
      ‘Wobbly’ = midrange
      ‘Wub’ = dubstep bass
      We solved it folks 😁

    I used to play keytar in a progressive rock band. For a while I had one of these fastened to the strap so I could just reach up with either hand and do weird sweeps and wobbly stuff on it whenever I wanted. It was like my secret little weapon!

    Good job!
    That vocoded voice is too lofi to be understood but bass and drums are sounding great. I liked that constriction of snare sounds using multiple "trash" sounds.

    • @nsiepmann
      @nsiepmann  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I struggled a bit with the vocoding - haven’t had much experience with it so far! Need to do some experimentation to find what works

  • @ianmorton1799

    The thing about the monotron is it actually has a pretty decent oscillator and filter. Limited, but good. Some people have done some incredible mods. I wish I could remember the exact details but there's what basically amounts to an ms-10 from modding one of these

    Very nice track you made! Never underestimate the power of the Monotron! They are capable of big sounds! Listen to my track "Lord I take your power in me"( Jason Basson And Lady Nathalie ) For the solo I used the Monotron Delay directly inside Ableton. I played it live. Greetz from Belgium.
