Season 3 is supposed to be about puberty and growing up, and I feel like this shows that Will is becoming aware of his feelings. In both cases, it seemed like he was on the edge of some territory that he was not ready to explore yet -- (I'm guessing his feelings towards boys)

Port will had been kidnapped and lost and I'm sure it took a lot of time to be able to have fun without being scared of literally everything he lost his opportunity to go out with his friends so he wanted to make up for lost time but the other either had a girlfriend or a mom friend (Steve) to spend time with and that's sad
