You just got stationed in Yokota. What is Fussa like?

  • Fussa is a weird mix between city, mini farming, and the suburbs. The area has a decent amount of stores that cater towards military members, but overall the area is not English friendly. Make sure to practice learning Japanese before you arrive, and the transition will be easier. The roads are tiny, and the cars are unique. To get into central Tokyo by train you're looking at an 80 minute travel time around $6. Japan is a strange place compared to the US. Don't be afraid to leave base and enjoy some of the mystery.

As a USAF dependent grade/jr. hi school child, we were there from '59-'63 living in a sweet 2bdrm bungalow = 3025, in West Area, just steps away from a dream playground and the elementary school that still had a bomb shelter. Then, we moved to North Area/ a two story duplex right x street from Large White Base Commander's house. That perimeter fence next to Hwy was also in our back yard. The Hwy/off base main street development is all new to me. Fussa has changed greatly. All quarters and maybe that great playground is torn down now, replaced with high rises it seems, concluded after watching Google Earth. Yokota looks like it doubled in size. There was no East or South Area when I was there having a great time growing up. I still remember so much Japanese language, that I've taught our son who can't wait to vacation there soon. I also met my future dear husband at grade school in the short 6 months we were at Grant Heights too. So very Sweet memories.

Was stationed at Yokota from 1976-1978. Fussa City has not changed very much. Still have the Nikon camera equipment that I purchased there.

Taught at YWES from 2004-2008. Lived off base in "Green Town", had a bike (with a front AND back basket), and often ventured into the city alone. The best time in my adult like!

I see Richard and Margaret's house is still there as a restaurant. Mine was torn down years ago. I only have one tattoo and it says Fussa in Chinese characters.
