  • This video will take you step by step through the orchid repotting process. I'll show you why orchids need lots of air at their roots, how to select the right size of pot, and discuss the best orchid media for potting. You will see me analyze the roots, and trim off any that are bad. Then I will report the orchid and you can observe every step of the process.

You will see me analyze the roots, and trim off any that are bad. Then I will report the orchid and you can observe every step of the process.
    I have been using this method for repotting orchids for 20 years, with thousands of orchids - it never fails me. It is easy to learn, and easy to follow. Use this method and you will no longer lose and orchid.
    Orchids should be repotted every two years. If this is not done, the media breaks down, holds too much water and roots start to rot. If you have hard water, repotting also reduces the amount of salts in the media - something that is harmful to orchid roots.
    Orchids are so easy to grow - learn to enjoy them. For more information about Orchid Care, have a look at this post: www.gardenfunda...

    Thank you! This was so clear and helpful not overloaded with information extras that are for avid growers not beginners like me.

    Gosh - almost everywhere else says to use the see through orchid pots - wondering now if I should change to plain old nursery pots 🤔

    My large phalaenopsis has HUGE leaves and is totally bent over. Should I remove the bottom leaves and repot it at a better angle for the leaves to be up straighter? Right now it's covered with flowers (including branching out from the spike). I assume I should wait until the flowers are all gone? And why does my plant have so many air roots?

      @Gardenfundamentals1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't remove lower leaves. Don't report until it is time - every 2 years. Phals naturally grow this way in nature. Nothing wrong with the plant. Air roots show a healthy plant.

      That can be a problem. Locally, Home Depot has them. Orchid shows usually have them.

    Where can I get the potting medium he uses? I live in the UK do I get it from amazon?

    I would like to plant an orchid similar to how it grows in rain forest. I live in zone 7.
    Suggestions?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless you have a high humidity area, I suggest you don't. Our homes are too dry for them just sitting in air. If you still want to try it, look up "mounting orchids on tree fern".

    You said normally when repotting you would cut the orchid stem. Would you cut that at the base of a
    N orchid that has that long looping stem? Thanks

    Hello. Could you please tell me what you would use on orchid roots that have furry white stuff on them.
    The orchid is quite old. I inherited it from my recently deceased Mother in law and i don't want it to die. If i can avoid that.
    Many thanks

      I have never seen mold on orchid roots. Are you sure you are not seeing the actual root covering? If not, let them dry out - that will get rid of any mold, or sprinkle cinnamon.

    Hi,since coconut comes from salty areas,would the salt and tannins be a problem for the orchid roots.

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - but coconut chunks are now washed quite well. 10 years ago I would have washed them myself because purchased product contained too much salt. Tannins are not a problem.

    I'm very gentle with my roots and still break them, I notice you can actually push on them and they're fine. Why is that?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I push on them I also break them, but the orchid root you see is just the outer coating - velamen - the real root is inside and does not break.
