I am so GLAD you all enjoyed my grandmother's pie! This makes me so very happpy! Thank you for trying it! Passing on the former generations recipes is how we keep things like this alive! Thank you for sharing! ❤
Good video! I chuckled at the sheep and your response....grass is always better on the other side of the fence, when you are a sheep! lol. That pie looked very good. Glad you covered - I am kinda glad my garden isn't in yet. They are forecasting frost here and Saturday is high of 9 with more rain - the fourth day of rain.
Just found out yesterday that all the stone fruits in BC were wiped out by the January deep freeze and the cool wet spring didn’t help. Man, I feel for those farmers. 3 years running of rough weather effecting crops.
@@LittleMountainRanch OH WOW!!! I had not heard. I as well feel for them. Wiped out as in dead trees or just the harvest for this year? I wondered why the peaches and cherries were so high last year. But glad I stocked up too.
We just named our baby Edna and every time I hear about an Edna someone knew they seem like a wonderful person and it makes me even more happy with the choice!
I had an Aunt Edna. She raised four children and nursed her Father until he passed. She was my Mother’s best friend although not a blood relative. Lovely lady who made the world’s BEST butter tarts! 😍😍😍😍
Hi Chelsea: just a quick comment about your corn, you might try a smaller square patch for them, rather than an long slim row of corn to get better pollination & seed for future growing out.
The grass is alway greener on the other side haaaa was always a farmer motto made statement from years ago. Clearly for a reason 💕 My critters too. Always want where they can't go. Oh my gosh the pie looooks so yum. So glad the plants were ok. hugs
I hear you on the "instinctive gardener" approach... I haven't taken on the companion plant thing either, but I see the benefit. Oh well, so far we still get a great crops :) We're in Northern Ontario, so I can relate on the unexpected frosts and short growing season!!
Growing up in So Cal, I recall the local citrus and strawberry farmers using smudge pots to ward off the frost in their fields. We were surrounded by dairy farms and fruit fields. Lots of fun summertime job opportunities for us.
Thanks for sharing the pie with us... I will be trying it soon!!😊 I like your channel alot! Thanks for sharing your life and your ideas with us as well!
The rhubarb bake is very similar to my mom’s rhubarb bar. She called just about anything she baked a bar because it was always in a big jelly roll pan. Rhubarb will always remind me of my mother and her love of baking. Thanks for another sweet video. ❤️
Like kid's. The sheep wanted to go where they were not to go. You made me laugh out loud!! I love your channel ❤️ God bless and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister ☦️ 🙏🏻 💙 ❤️
Chelsea, you handle the challenges and problem-solving with such grace and energy. Your daughter will be so happy Mom protected her pretty garden. Thanks again for letting us peep into your life.
I have noticed that since we have a cold spring, there are not that many bees around. Love haskaps and tried a haskap chutney (recipe from Canadian Haskap Association) with tourtiere....omg, the chutney was delicious! We are looking also at very unseasonably cold nights and since I have planted my tomato, cucumber and squash starts outside, it is likely to stunt them even if we have no actual frost. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!
Hey Chelsea It's been cold at night in Red Deer the entire month of May. My squash is looking miserable. I've covered them with clear tubs to try to keep them alive. Good thing I save every pot that comes home with me so I can cover everything.👩🌾
We had a cold front with rain here in Michigan. Monday supposed to be 41 degrees at night then back up to summer temps. I got some of our summer stuff out so definitely will be covering them.
Running strings of holiday lights under plastic covers can create enough heat to easily make it through a light frost. Also wrapping a few of your rafters/cross beams in the high tunnel can give you some warmth to plant safely a bit earlier. *Tested tricks of a Minnesota (Northern US) gardener.
That is like what I used to make. I got the recipe from a very good friend of my mother. Only difference was we added 1 tsp of grated orange peel and a tsp of nutmeg.. This brought back some wonderful memories.
I live in AB too and I guess I am thankful I have been unable to get my garden in the ground until a week ago. I haven't put in the tomato, cucumber or pepper plants yet for that very reason! So ridiculous!
I have heard from other Gardner's that watering your plants before the frost happens will help the plants. I have not had opportunity to test it out. Nancy from Nebraska
For most plants that are frost sensitive we pull the dirt over them, covering the entire plant, for the plants that are too tall we cover with old doubled sheets
June 10th has some unfortunate memories for my family, we had some major happenings on the day 3 years in a row starting back in 2015, so now I always say we skip that day, instead June 9th and the 11th are both 36 hours long😊. Weird that you are experiencing negative happenings also on that date. Let's hope June 10th is better this year!
I wonder if you could use a pool cover on its usual roll those tend to be durable (so hail help and such) and they’re large so could be used for multiple rows!
You are just amazing! Always love what you share with all of us! We all learn from what experiences you go through and share. I'm glad everything is good. What area again are you in?
Hi from 🇸🇪 Sweden. Great that your plants made it! Here it's been a very hot May and June has started out cold, but fortunately no frost. I love rhubarb too, I have the best recipe for a delicious quick rhubarb pie, but I'm not sure how to translate it! it calls for syrup made with sugar beets, and I don't even know if you have it or what it resembles.
Maybe syrup made with sugar cane. Also we have sugar beet harvest in the United States. So please share three recipe and we can search out what would work best. Maybe even just karo syrup that is easy to find. 😊
Did you mean transpiration when talking about the moisture on the tomato leaves? I am always amazed at how gardening differs in such cold temps. Here on the east coast of VA, those temps would have destroyed all crops. Your gardens are wonderful! 🌞🥒🫛🌞
If you can get outside before the sun hits the plants, if you spray everything with water and wash off the frost, they will be fine. It has to be done before the sun hits the plants, though.
O I hope everything works out for what you have been so busy planting.if anyone can you can. I hope you're potatoes are OK because you have so many well you have been doing this for so long so I would rather take your advice. Dan coming up with a great idea, good luck.
Enjoy your channel. Made the rhubarb pie in a pan today! Delicious. Fingers crossed no more frost. Here in Nov Scotia we live in zone 5A. Last typical day of frost June 7th, but have had frost later in June over the years and also in August. We did invest in some row cover. Can you share how you canned the rhubarb please? Same process as applesauce? Thank you for all your wonderful information. I understand canning, could not find a recipe for canning rhubarb.
Hi, I'm in NE Alberta and my haskaps are beautiful this year with all the rain... But the waxwings love them too. In the process of trying to figure how to screen them to protect them from the raiders 😊
When you see the guttation do you usually stop watering or do you just water less? Or is it a groundwater problem? So glad that the garden made it through the frost.
Usually I just wait until til the soil dries a bit before watering. Plants are always releasing water through their leaves but you can only see it when the temps cool enough for the droplets to hold and not just evaporate.
I have a question from an older video. Did I see that you have freezers located outside on your porch? If so, how do they do outside in the winter there?
I am so GLAD you all enjoyed my grandmother's pie! This makes me so very happpy! Thank you for trying it! Passing on the former generations recipes is how we keep things like this alive! Thank you for sharing! ❤
We loved it! Was even better the second day. Thank you so much for the recipe.

I like the idea of a shortcake crust for the Rhubarb Pie 💗 Relieved to know the frost coverings worked and glad you had sufficient on hand!👌💚
Glad you didn’t have any frost damage. At least you have your method for covering your plants and know it works! 💚

Dan had a great idea to put the fabric on a reel - so quick if frost warning or hail sneaks up on you!😍🇨🇦
Incandescent Christmas lights can help keep plants warm too.
Was just thinking I should add some to the Hightunnel.

I am jealous. We had frost here in Flagstaff Arizona last week. 😳. I am happy you are having such a good garden
I am so thankful your plants faired well in the frost. I’m in Southeast Missouri and even though we have not had frost, it’s unseasonably cool.

You could freeze dry the rhubarb, it is wonderful to be able to make a rhubarb 🥧 in the fall, as well as a batch of rhubarb apple muffins.

Good idea, North Pole Alaska here
my peas and onions seem to love being together biggest crop ever this year with them together
"Good thing they're so cute." Famous last words :) Hahaha
I say that about my goats every time they escape!
Oh your garden looks so orderly! it’s maddening when gardening gets harder by having to cover the plants!
I planted green onions next to my peas, I’ve never noticed problems in the past, guess we’ll wait and see☺
Yup, that’s my attitude, too.
Happy weekend Chelsea and family..much love from 🇫🇷

Glad the garden weathered the frost . The dessert sounds delicious will give it a try. Thank you for sharing
The dish looked wonderful. Glad you saved most of your plants.
The coolest idea for the reel cover ❤ gonna try that, we have lots of hail.
Your summer is like our winter!!
Northern Alberta here. Hate this weather. My tomatoes are getting pummeled by wind and cold.

Your weather is usually a day ahead of mine then it heads down hear to Montana . It's nice to watch your videos to know whats heading my way 😊
I love your garden set up
For most plants that are frost sensitive we pull the dirt over them, covering the entire plant, for the plants that are too tall we cover with old doubled sheets

Why does rinsing the frost off help? Usually they are solid frozen with frost here in northern Alaska. Thanks😊
Down south here in Princeton we have had night temps just above freezing. After the weekend nights look much better.
Hi Chelsea!
Do you have a video on how to make your cool wooden (stick) garden trellis?
All is looking beautiful!
Or arbor. Not sure what you call it in Canada 🌼

lol! Apparently.
Hi Chelsea. What variety of haskap do you have? I’m in Ontario, zone 5 and it looks like something I’d like to add to my garden.😊
2 questions about the recipe: is it supposed to be 2 table spoon sugar in the crust? And 3l4 cup sugar in the meringue? Thank you

I'm curious about brassicas- what are they and what are they used for?
Brassicas are broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage (I think), and the like. Just in case Chelsey doesn't get a chance to answer right away. God bless🙏
Brassicas are things like broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc.
Brassicas and root crops grow better in cold weather climates. Northern Alaska here.
Another June frost?! Ugh
Global warming I guess!! Frost June 10th yikes
