Ah, Stranger in Paradise. A game where it's not so much about the destination, but the journey and the Fiends we made along the way.
And chaos?
@@666magicwe no longer talk about the C-word
The fiends are the friends we made along the way, literally
as long as Chaos is Deactivated along the way
CHAOS!
My favorite detail of this: all four main characters have names short enough to fit into the four-character limit of the original NES FF1.
Sophia is the only one who doesn't quite fit, though I suppose it would in Japanese. I guess you could squeeze it down into Sofa
@@gabdraws7003 lol they could have did Sofi instead.
Except Jack fighting himself would be weird..
@@gabdraws7003to be fair, Sophia wasn't part of the original 4 characters, so Neon would likely be the 4th used instead lol
@@jakejohnson718yeah her name is actually great foreshadowing that they're not warriors of light at all
plot is honestly totally nuts in a pretty good way
Heart wrenching though
Bless you, Oni, for noting which stage belongs to what FF.
that is in the description of all stages before you begin...
This game was definitely better than most thought it was. The combat was brilliant, and I personally loved how it interacted with Dissidia: Opera Omnia with the Moogle and Mannikins
Not to mention, the portal that Jack used to throw Mateus in is LITERALLY from the one in NT
It didn't have enough fun with its own ridiculousness, but you could ignore that part pretty easily.
It also finally explained how Jack became the Garland seen in Dissidia Duodecim.
Since Opera Omnia is now closed and their little "eSports" experiment with NT basically ruined Dissidia fighting games, I hope that Stranger of Paradise will become the evolution of it. Its been a while aince the Emperor DLC released and no more content is out there, but this one deserves to take on the mantle and keep the insanity going
I never realised how intrinsically tied to Dissidia SoP was.
I may have to buy and play this now
You won’t regret it I promise
Take a shot every time you hear - "Chaos" LOL
I'm trying to kill Chaos not create him! 😂
I played through Stranger of Paradise a few days ago and the story to me is quite tragic. I liked all the characters and the plot twist at the end was so intriguing
😂😂
* turns around and walks away aggressively while turning on Spotify to MAX volume. *
I got the best song for my feelings rn. They better think of me when they hear it.
It's wild to me that the Bahamut from Final Fantasy XV's goddamn cancelled DLC novelization is canonically the same one from FF1.
Not necessarily canonically, but strongly implied. When Bahamut was revealed to have been worshipped as a god and then betrayed by humanity my first thought was “Dawn of the Future?”
Favorite game of 2022, honestly, I don't know why but this game is just too freaking fun and funny. From Jack being so single mindedly simple to the fun gameplay loop imo. I will always remember this game fondly despite some of the issues I've had recently
Like many, I kind of rejected this game. Surprised how good the story is. I like how it’s a challenging game too. I may put it on my backlog! Love Oni’s videos. Perfection every time.
Love these videos but absolutely love how this ties back to the original FF!
Don't sleep on this game. Not only is it co-op fun, but compared to FF16, it has much better combat, level design, customization, replayability, music (imo) and a better main character (and memes) in Jack Garland.
I think I understand the meaning behind Garland. But all of this was because of Aliens?
@@laelhochberg9497 Lufenians were actually part of ff1 lore part of the sky people. they are a bit changed in paradise indeed. Aliens..
I would think ff16s devil may cry combat is better
FF16's combat is NOT Devil May Cry, not even close. It takes more than a meaningless combo counter to make something DMC@@bicarbonateofsoda117
@@OniBlackMage sorry I meant ff16 has dmc 'style' combat, since the combat director for dmc worked on ff16 combat. There have been combo videos and such where you can do a lot with the games combat, although it will never be as good as dmc I agree but its not bad. I've played both games and Sop plays like Nioh and that was fun, so both combat systems are good in their own games I think:)
I want a Stranger of Paradise 2. This game and character were so fun. And the amount of builds is really good. Too bad it all end in like kill in 3 secs builds.
FF2 given this same makeover would be so cool. The game is so much fun to play and yeah, I love buildcrafting and how you can make your own combos and switch complete classes with such unique and differing playstyles to really make it your own. I was impressed how fluid spellcasting in fast-paced combat handled without it feeling weak or spammy.
@@OniBlackMageI have to wonder if they used the Emperor and let him go as a means to set up a sequel using 2's world.
SoP2 would be the story of FF2
So close to the big 100K Oni!
Anyhow, I'm happy to see you covering this one. It's one of the more interesting games I've played in the last few years. Originally skeptical of its premise, I found its design and story really interesting. I'm not sure if it works as a true "prequel", but it is interesting enough that I find myself wanting more. I would love to see FF1 remade based on this.
Great video as always!
I'm sure I'm not alone thinking this was going to be a grimdark, edgy Garland origin story. No one expected a multidimensional tale touching the FF universe all wrapped up into an antihero journey. Such a wild ride and I love the unapologetic attitude as it doesn't take itself too seriously. I had a lot of fun with the game and recommend it to as many people will listen
Glad to see another video from you. Keep up the great work. Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much for creating this! Great video.
Like most final fantasy's I need videos like this to fully understand.
Oh sweet, catching it live!
Youre close to 100k, proud of ya
See i watched a story review of this game and now i get one from the best story explainer
Keep it up I am going to watch all the videos and like them all!!! No one on my TH-cam feed is doing what you are doing I am a big fan and make a patron and I promise your patron will be the fir patron I subscribe to.
Well since the Emperor has already been done, Jack's story came to a close, Exdeath and Cloud of Darkness are literally forces of nature, Xande isn't all that interesting, Kefka's descent into madness was already shown and Sephiroth's origin has already been explored via Ever Crisis and Crisis Core, I think it would make sense for Golbez or Kuja to be the next in line, or Ultimecia. I think Golbez could be interesting if they detail his initial encounter with Zemus, or Kuja's story taking place before Zidane was hatched, Ultimecia I think would be the most interesting bc we would get to see her timeline, how she came to power, and how she's able to throw her consciousness through time. I imagine an Ultimecia game would be heavily magic focused. Then there's the likes of Seymour, Jecht, Gabranth, Vayne, Caius and Ardyn. We've already seen and played through Ardyn's origin, Caius' origin is explained through cutscenes, Vayne could be interesting but I would rather see Gabranth during his time as a soldier in his homeland fighting alongside Basch, Seymour and Jecht's journies feel too FFX-0-ish and I don't think either would add to the Spira games in any meaningful way. But that's just my opinion
Ultimecia would work best since VIII deals a lot with time lines similarly to I.
@@Dzzy123 I agree, and I'm most curious to see what her timeline is like and how she rose to power.
Golbez's origin was already shown an explained in a remake of the game, he was a Lunarian originally named Theodore who lived on the planet of earth alongside his mother an father his father being killed by hateful prejudice an his mother dying from illness. this absence of love made him feel a strong hatred toward earth an Zemus took full advantage of it an molded him into his emissary of darkness.
theodore now proclaimed as the dark wizard Golbez then abandoned his infant brother outside of Baron where he was discovered by the king who adopted him an gave him the name Cecil.
@@DeusGamez Oh I didn't know that. I figured Golbez's origin was another ambiguous origin where we knew one thing about the character and that's it.
For a slightly different idea, how about a game starring the Warriors of Darkness from FF3 and seeing their journey against the Flood of Light?
Wow i would of never guessed this story was so good
Right?
Wow oni black mage is back
It's so interesting watching you detail this game. At no point did I ever consider buying this, 15, or 16.
I LOVE SoP so much, it was a fun game from start to finish and one I have 0 regrets in buying and grinding
i love this game so much it was my GOTY for 2022!
SoP cleverly combines an incredibly rich ARPG battle system with the defining traits of the FF job system.. the story is also great and builds on the established dissidia/multiverse continuity
What an absolute banger if a story.
I hope you’ll do a recap of World of Final Fantasy soon. Both that game and SoP really do open up things and have such interesting stories. They also sound like they have strong ties with Dissidia. This one being more direct in the reference than WoFF. But the main characters in WoFF so far play an interesting role in the mobile Dissidia App Game’s story
WoFF and Dissidia are definitely coming relatively soon
@@OniBlackMageNice, looking forward to it, i love your recaps ^^
There’s something satisfying, when my dude says “ The story only gets larger from here, so let’s cut it down to size with recapitation”
Ty for this one got platinum without knowing what’s going on I just really loved the game even more now
I love the deep strange elements across the ff series in a great weave how they echo across the games.
20:15 AH, AH, HE SAID IT. HE SAID THE THING. WOOOOOO
Honestly this game was AMAZING
somehow i was wondered that dissidia and SoP is connected
and welcome back Oni
Thanks. I was waiting for this. I just couldn't bring myself to play through the game (not really my thing) but I wanted to know the story
The king is back
Give a Like because dear god how many data logs you had to read to make it understable. Good work.
Such an underrated game honestly
27 minutes of Chaos
Thanks for the breakdown.
I've played FF1 and this game. By the end of the Game, I felt totally lost. It didn't make sense, but this video has provided a lot of clarity for me. FF is my favorite game series - I didn't love this game.
0:38 there it is, that's all you need to know 😂👌🏾
Great!
Too much CHAOS. 10/10
Like MGRR no one thought it was gonna be good but youve just gotta give it a chance and youll find something incredible.
Okay, ngl. This prequel is pretty cool. It's got a very KH vibe too.
I actually liked the story of this game, the boss fights and combat are sooo fun... but the trash mobs not so much. I remember being so frustrated trying to fight like 5 mobs at once which all have overpowered abilities which were much harder than the boss encounters. the disparity between the bosses being very smooth and felt skill based to the trash encounters in the dungeons just feeling like a mess
One of my favorite things about Jack is how he cut the bullshit to go straight to the facts and later on as he gained the power of Chaos, the asshole is all about babbling his opponents' ears off (see him in all dissidia games!) 😂
I mean Dissidia Garland is more like a phantom of the past, like an Echo of the FF1 Garland (aka a fake Garland who was a knight ok Cornelia and turned bad)
So he was born on a cycle and lives for cycles being very talkative and full of himself lol
3:09 ah yes, we were treated to the signature “awfully suspicious” early!
I just finished the base game tonight, damn wat a journey this is, especially if you're familiar with the series and the ff1 story, i wouldnt mind if they explore more or even make this somehow ties into another series for the rest of final fantasy numbers, make it like an alternate story or world xD
Please recap Nights Of Azure.
Take a shot every time you hear "Chaos"
I was not expecting to like this game but man it was good I hope they make FF2 in this style because I know its coming as this was a sleeper hit.
This game was an unexpected 10/10 for me, unironically. Even the use of My Way worked spectacularly.
Hoping for SoP 2 with a character creation and more classes added. The game was suprisingly amazing and better than ff16.
SoP 2 wouldn't that'd be just FF1? maybe a full remake with these gameplay mechanics.
@@hollyc5417it could be anything
A story about Emperor (who after DLC became a regular human so he has to start all over again) for example
And one of the devs said he wants a FFX Origins with the Jecht, Braska and Auron story
So a sequel can happen using another FF
But ngl I would love a FF1 REMAKE
I like that if you want a challenging souls like looter game you can choose normal but if you want a fun hack and slash you can choose easy.
HE SAID IT HE SAID IT!!!!
This game was a trip to play and boy was it fuckin great
This game looks amazing it reminds me of the story in FFXIV where the warriors of light became warriors of darkness to save the world it's really awesome told in a different way but its still awesome
Weirdly the stuff after the release of the main game makes me think more and more of Mobius FF. I don't know if you plan to cover that ever, but it had some pretty high concept story ideas like what they did here. (If with a much different vibe.)
Mobius sounds like a special project... I would like to cover it, but would need to take a closer look at how it's structured for its story. Truth be told, a lot of people miss out of the mobile games' stories. Do you think Mobius is worth a recap?
The biggest issue with a Mobius Recap is that the story was never finished. I don't know how you'd handle something like that. It might just be something you'd want to look into even for just your own interest.
It's been a long while since I played and it's tough to find stuff on it now, but it starts with these weird concepts like, your character is just named Wol. As if the acronym of Warrior of Light was just a word. And the whole time you have the Princess urging you on, but ... something is OFF. And eventually Garland just kind of hangs out with you on your journey a bit, from what I remember, cautioning that things aren't right. That's the part that reminded me so much of Strangers. That the story or at least the archetypes are all there, but something is off.
Not gonna lie, a lack of an ending is a bit problematic, but I still check it out in case I can do something with it. Thanks for the heads up@@Kasaaz
Yeah, it's one of those tragedies of doing things as a live service / mobile game. But as a weird Final Fantasy artifact, it is pretty fascinating.
i am glad this comment was brought up there is implications in mobius that suggest that "jack" could be related to a certain Warrior(Garland the Heretic) who disappeared from the lufenian built playground specifically designed for creating warriors of light lol though i assume the place was dumped and abandoned much like the chaos dimension in SoP due to its overseer "Vox" going rogue an mysteriously disappearing lmao.
I'm gonna watch it later 😂
Loved this game would love to see ff2-6 be given a dark fantasy reimagining and continue where this game left off 😁
FF6 should be a prequel where you play as Kefka. After each Magick infusion he moves more and more towards the Crazy Kefka we know.
I originally wrote off Stranger of Paradise, thinking it would be every aspect I didn't like about modern Final Fantasy rolled into one. I was hugely wrong and instead got what I feel was a love letter to the franchise akin to World of Final Fantasy. SoP became my favorite game of 2022. I do have a question, where did you get the sales number mentioned at the end of the video? All I ever find is launch sales number and you mentioning it was "a success selling over 1.9 million copies worldwide" sounds great to me.
SOP was such a pleasant surprise, for sure. I usually get my sales numbers from vgsales and vgchartz
"Every aspect I didn't like about modern Final Fantasy rolled into one."
That's FF16 for me.
@@TheCyclicGamer You have my condolences. I liked FF16's combat but, not the story, characters or it's pacing. I did like some of the side characters though.
@@Gordoniankid Yea it's a very mixed bag. I think the problem is that they took the wrong lessons from XV and focused too much on delivering a complete story but forgetting the game part of it.
@@TheCyclicGamer I felt like it focused more on spectacle with the boss battles and Eikon battles. But forgot to add any reason to care about them. Characters with potential just being thrown away or barely used.
Makes sense
This story seems...trippy
Very nice video ! There is just few things i still dont get which are jack and ff 1/dissidia garland the same person ? What are the differences between ff 1 and ff sop regarding the wol garland chaos etc ?
Apparently they are the same person and Jack started a time loop after receiving the power of Chaos and stealing that crystal thing from the Lufenians. His "dark knight" appearance might have been what Chaos intended to look like all along (Neon posing as Chaos). I guess it was fate that a man named Garland would come along to take the reins of Chaos (it isn't unusual to have that sort of prophecy kind of thing in fantasy games).
If i recal correctly in SoP the loops were restarted by the lufenians and the people involved were never supposed to retain their memories. However, the princess and Jack along with hia friends did and Astos went against his programming to never forget so it's entirely possible that at some point the princess was misremembering when was the last time she met a knight named Garland 🤔
I love these time loops tbh, it reminds me of how fun it is to play with The Legend of Zelda timelines and loops
They are the same and they are not at the same time.
Dissidia Garland says in opera Omnia that Jack is from a different cycle than him.
Astos says that after world resets chaos can make Phantoms of previous cycles.
Dissidia Garland is the FF 1 Garland a knight of Cornelia who went Crazy and kidnapped Sarah.
This Garland is originated from Cornelia, so it's fair to assume is a "phantom" Of Jack after he made his own Cycle (aka Stranger of Paradise ending)
Dissidia Garland is the original FF Garland after the end of the game (aka after they defeat chaos)
So basically after Jack cycle is broken and the world released by the warriors of light, Jack likely stays in Cornelia with Sarah, while this phantom of his ends on Dissidia.
Meanwhile the Warrior of light would be the Dissidia Cid clone who after Dissidia ends into World A (making Dissidia the begging of WOL and the end of Garland ironically)
Now i understand now,why emperor are so desperate in final fantasy 2 for forgiveness because he wants to back his true powers to seek revenge from jack garland.
Am i the only one who perked up when I heard “based on Mount gagazet in dimension 10” @ @07:40
You just blew my mind 🤯
Could that mean all the worlds being linked is officially canon? 👀
i never even heard this game got realeased or anything about it until this video wtf
I would really love to see the world of FFVI revisited in full glorious 3D.
i got to about 4 hours in, figuring this was a crappy ff1 action game. Hell was i wrong. Thanks for the recap. im actually going to replay this fully this time!
Chaos-
Chaos
The game's main story may be cringe but the DLCs with the connection to Dissidia "the GOAT"- Final Fantasy was pretty cool to see.
I was literally just playing it lmao
The True Recap of the story is as follows.
Chaos.
Stranger of Paradise has a very interesting story, which is hidden under all wacky and corny dialogue of Jack and his "GOTTAKILLCHAOS" talk.
This is my BIG question? what monsters did the strangers have to kill to gain access to the choas shrine
CHAOS! god i remember the memes.
I'm going to assume that this Bahamut is a Reincarnation of the Bahamut from 15 after the dawn of the future DLC that got canceled my only evidence that this Bahamut is that Bahamut is the fact that both have wings made of swords
Chaos? Did you just say Chaos? Chaos! Chaaaaoooooos! CHAAAAAAAOOOOOOS!!!
the 4 warriors of darkness
I SO would have loved it if you would have had a CHAOS counter. lolol
This game does have the Wicked effect. Since the WoLs didn’t even have names much less characters, I suddenly care far more about Garland and the Fiends. It doesn’t help the situation they decided to make Tiamat so hot.
10:41 there is an impostor among us
👏👏👏
So Oni Black Mage, when are you going to do a recap video of Final Fantasy 16?
When all of the story DLC is out
The story is so convoluted, best part is playing as the warrior of light, just make ff1 but in high quality, is it so hard?
Chaos.
Awesome work, man. Never played this but always thought I did but looking at this mess of a story, I am glad I didn't. Still, thanks for the vid.
Where have you been? It's been forever since I've you stream or anything.
Thank you for asking. I took a 6 month hiatus for personal reasons earlier in the year... got better, came back and now for the past 2 months I have been trying to get back on YT's good side as it doesn't recommend my stuff anymore (check it out the new stuff and leave a like to help the algorithm!). I won't be streaming really anymore, but I am back on the recap content grind.
aww man no chaos counter?
What are the dimensions
Despite the story being plain dumb and the characters very one-note, and the optimisation of the game garbage, I love it to bits. It was so much fun doing the entire game and even 100 floors of Gilgamesh with a friend. The job system is fun and it was cool how we could make job combos that support each other. And although the constant clogging of inventory got real tiresome real fast, I did enjoy working on getting the perfect gear for myself. I would've probably hated playing it solo, as the difficulty gets pretty insane later. You either have to make broken builds or be some super player who never gets hit by anything. But with a friend, it was way more doable.
PS. Anemone the malboro is best girl and I love her to bits. And having the tonberry be SoP's Cid is great.
So just so i understand the context of the game.......This is supposed to be a semi-prequel/ recontextualization of the first Final Fantasy game? the 'Alter' route that changes how you look at the main title?
Basically what Crisis Core is to FF7, Stranger of Paradise is to FF1, but that's kind of a big 'Maybe'.
@@TheCyclicGamer is that a "pretty much"? Didn't play any side titles at all but iirc crisis core was a prequel with Zach no?
A recap of how many times chaos will be said in 27 mins lol.
Wait hold up let me get this straight: this game explains the entirety of the Final Fantasy multiverse and that each game taking place in its own timeline/continuity/universe is just yet another world being used as an experiment by the Lufenians right? Then by destroying Nil and The Emperor and finally being struck down Jack ended that cycle of worlds being destroyed/reset etc so what does that mean for the future of the franchise? If Jack became the God of Discord but then was killed by a Warrior of Light does that then mean that just Cornelia is free now or does that mean the entire multiverse is free of the primordial struggle between Light and Dark since Jack broke that cycle? Cause if its the entire multiverse is free of that, how can we have any new games at all that aren't basically just a repeat of FF XVI like a struggle between the elementals and each nation wielding one of them? There's so many questions rather than answers here, or do we just solve it all by placing Stranger of Paradise at the very end of the grander Final Fantasy timeline if you can call it that?
Game is way too underrated for the memes, but Jack is quite funny with all his edginess 😂
This game was fun but the combat while kinda solid, suffers from cheesy boss combat, using just as cheesy methods to fight those bosses (extra mode runic protection/holy guard for immunity) plus the DLCs especially the Gilgamesh one are very grind heavy.
Okay, even after listening to this entire thing, I'm still on the "what were they smoking?" train. But it definitely goes so far off the deep end that it becomes fun.
Exactly, they let loose and don't take themselves too seriously... it just wants to be a fun videogame
@@OniBlackMage more anime-influenced games need to do that, when they take themselves ultra seriously it becomes a lot less fun and engaging
@@gsofficialYeah, then it becomes melodramatic cringe
