  • There is nothing like full swales, with the frogs calling for a mate, dragonflies buzzing around, and tadpole galore. None of that would be possible in the desert without these earthworks. Even though these swales are not being used in a conventional way, they are serving multiple purposes, which is the epitome of Permaculture.

The swales make perfect sense for your conditions. They dont need to be Geoff Lawton swales. Water catchment by itself is ample reason. Great work!

I would try to stabilize the swales w some ground cover to reduce the erosion, i heard sorghum is a good one, maybe try to do it slowly fencing a bit of the property so the goats can still graze the other parts. Just a suggestion!

That is an excellent way to control the flooding we get from the monsoon season, thanks for sharing it

If you said you built them last week, i would have believed you. Seems like something would have established if goats weren't involved.

Haha. The goats don't help. Being in the desert, it would only be lush portions of the year, and would dry out in other parts.

Fantastic! I have 16 in the brooder and another clutch of 22 set to hatch Thursday. I might make a video when I move them outside. Thanks for asking and taking the time to watch and comment.

I think just keeping it natural back there or let native species take over. Like mesquite trees and allow vegetation for goats.

Yeah, I have a good number of Mesquites and Palo Verdes coming up. Thanks for your input!
