    Key references in the lyrics:
    (1) "Moskva" is the Russian name for both Moscow and a river that runs through Moscow. The city is named for the river.
    (2) "Gorky Park" is a major park along the Moskva River in Moscow.
    (3) "Balalaika" is a Russian guitar-like instrument with a triangular body.

Hi Joy, the song plays in the time of 1989 and 1990. The change in soviet government under M.Gorbachev. It show the erection (1961) and the fall of the Berlin wall (Nov 9th, 1989). The communist massacre in Bejing (June 1989) and he German reunification (Oct 3rd, 1990) within the defeat of the communism in Europe. The Moskva is the river thru city of Moscow. In russian the city of the Moscow also called Moskva situated at the Moskva-River. Gorky Park is one of bestknow parks in Moscow. Name's patron is the russian poet Maxim Gorky. Klaus Meinl (the singer) wrote this song at music festival in Moscow.

It all about ending of Cold War at the end of the 80's and Europe. It is about a fall of Soviet Union, it is about freedom which came to the Central and Eastern European countries which had been uder Soviet Union's domination for almost 40 years, It is about fall of the Berlin's wall. The song has got deep message for European people and Cold war generations.

When you know the history this is an incredible, beautiful song full of happiness and optimism. Important to research the Berlin Wall coming down. Finally East and West Berlin could be the same city again after Russia and the US split it after World War II. Remember that the Scorpions are from Germany so it would be very close to their hearts. The Winds of Change basically saying the Wall coming down was a sign things were changing, it was a time for hope for everyone into the future.

The lyrics were composed by Klaus Meine following the band's visit to the Soviet Union at the height of perestroika, when the enmity between the communist and capitalist blocs subsided concurrently with the promulgation of large-scale socioeconomic reforms in the Soviet Union.
"Wind of Change" was released as the album's third single on 21 January 1991 and became a worldwide hit, just after the failed coup that would eventually lead to the end of the Soviet Union.

I would like to tell my story about it. The events in November 1989 were overwhelming. My family was divided into two parts until that time. It was always difficult to keep in touch with the relatives in East Germany. My father always tried to keep in touch. The fall of the Berlin Wall could not be predicted, but it was noticeable that change was in the air in Germany. No one knew if there would be a good ending.
The song "Wind of change" became for me and many Germans the soundtrack of a new era, a turning point in time.
Scorpions were the first major music export from Germany. The band comes from Hanover and has been active for over 50 years.
I would like to recommend three Scorpions songs:
    Big City Nights
    Rock you like a hurricane
    Still loving you

The song was written at a time when the USSR and President Gorbachev took a course towards rapprochement with the West, the end of the Cold War with the United States. It was a really good time and a lot of hope.
But at the same time, crime began to grow in the USSR, which reached the heights of public administration. Russia did not want to lose influence and bribed governments and officials in neighboring countries in order to have influence. In Ukraine, this process met with resistance, which led to the bitterness of Russia and Putin revealed his face as a criminal.
Ukraine will win, justice and peace must return, Glory to Ukraine 💛💙

I was born behind the iron curtain in 1980. This was one of the first songs our English teacher played to us somewhere around 1990, when the "time changed". I did not understand the lyrics at that time, but now, many years from then I am getting it...
There was a joke at that time...A man is standing with his son in front of the Iron Curtain and the son asks his father: "Daddy, who is living behind that fence?" "It is us, my son, we do..." 😞

In 1990 I graduated high school and left for the army infantry. Right at that time the whole world seemed like it was a major change for the better. We all had hope the cold war was over. Written at a time of political and economical upheaval this was the very hymn of freedom for most countries that had to live under Soviet control for over 40 years. More than anything it is conntected to the (mostly) peaceful revolutions of the eastern European people, which ultimatively led to the fall of the iron curtain and Berlin wall and finally German unification. If you want to hear more of this band and their truly astonishing singer try 'Send Me An Angel' (you got the smile girl) or the one and only power ballad 'Still Loving You'!

So I was 20 years old, I was a British Army soldier and I was posted to West Germany (as it was) I was in Berlin earlier in the year covering duties and you just knew something was going to happen. Hess had killed himself in 87 so Spandau had been knocked down to make way for a shopping centre things were moving fast. I got a call from a mate asking if I wanted to be part of the biggest party in the world so a group of us jumped in the car and drove as fast as we could to Berlin. New Year's eve 1989 we were standing screaming bring it down when we saw David Hasselhoff jump into a bucket on a crane and get lifted over the wall singing his very cheesy song "Looking for Freedom" which all of a sudden took on a totally different meaning. The crowds on both sides ran forwards and down came the wall and down came east Germany. People say it was Winds of Change that was the catalyst but this didn't come out until 1990 it was the Hoff who broke the wall and he will always remain one of the most surrealist parts of my very strange life. So I don't know if I was part of the biggest party in the world but I was there and I saw David Hasselhoff end communism in Germany which eventually broke the Soviet Union. Try going to a Hollywood film maker with that script 😆. Oh and in Germany the Hoff is still a god.
This song does remind me of this amazing time and is great but it's not as good as "Looking for Freedom" being sung in a bucket 100 feet above the ground by an American actor on new-years eve 1989.

Growing up during the Cold War was, frankly, terrifying. Everybody felt that we were only one press of the button away from annihilation. I have always lived in one first strike target or another, so the fear was constant. And then, when the Berlin wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed, the euphoria I felt is indescribable. I could suddenly breathe again. Now with what Putin is doing to Ukraine and Xi Jinpeng threatening Taiwan brings back all of the old tensions. God help us all.
