Mamede ran in the 800m, 1500m, 10,000m and the 4x400m at the Olympics! Mamede was also a top cross country runner, finishing third in the World Cross Country Champs in 1981.
Mamede is a very nice and kind man. He was 'the most perfect human machine' his coach, the patient genius Moniz Pereira (now over 90 years old), ever knew. In meetings, he was virtually unbeatable: no matter how fast the race was, nobody could match his sprint. Sadly, he never managed to deal with pressure when running at the highest level: at that level, his best result was a 3rd place at the 1981 IAAF WCC. Ironically, cross-country was the kind of running Mamede least liked...
Great footage of a much malined (in his major championship efforts) runner, Mamede was often thought to only be capable of running in a "set-up" type race. He is kicking away from some very good runners here with a sub 55 second last lap. I have always wanted to here his take as to why he "bombed out" in so many major championship races. Just proves even the so called great ones are human. His DNF at the 1984 Olympic games came but some 4 weeks after setting the WR in the 10K! Great posting!
Might be you are right, i miss the year on race numbers. But Mamede did win again in 1984 being Leitao and Ryfel behind him indeed. That was the reason of my mistake. Sorry.
No, this race was in 1983. Check it out. Check out the race numbers on the athletes. The year of competition is always on the Weltklasse numbers. Additionally, the drug cheat Vainio was pulled out of the LA 5K Final and served a ban immediately after the Games and would not have been able to compete in the 1984 Weltklasse.
It's all done "under" the laws of today. The amount of stuff those athletes can legally put into themselves nowadays is impressive and didn't even exist back then. Add that to perfecting training, coaching, physio and medicine and there you go. Super humans.
Nós os portugueses já não conseguimos encontrar talentos para as maratonas como era nos anos 80 Mamede Rosa Mota Fernanda Ribeiro i muito mais agora so no futebol
Mamede, whatever you say about his relative lack of success in the majors was a great runner with an incredible range from 400 to10k.

That is a very fast last lap about 55secs? Glad he had his moments of glory.

Dave Moorcroft was the world record holder from 82-85
Do you have any race footage of Fernando Mamede? They are quite rare.
Yes, I have the 10,000m heat from Helsinki on this site.
And you are trying to have me believe that today an athlete is doubling the distance at a faster speed and it's all done natural?

this 5000m, Weltklasse Zurich video run wasn´t in 1983 but in 1984 a few weeks right after 84 LA olympics. Check out.
