I just discovered G.A.T. in the past few months after running P4H and HBO pretty much every day, and I'm blown away. It's not as accessible but the jazzy production and the abstract rhyme schemes are just so incredible. Creeping up my top mach albums
Fanon used to be Mach’s main producer, him & Mach work best together but they haven’t made any music together in over 3 years, he produced Bulletproof Luh, Luh Hertz& The GAT
HBO grows on you A LOT over the months. The abstract beats and space all over the album sounds better and better over time. It’s been about a year since i first listened and I love it wayyyy more but that goes for almost all of Mach’s music. I think HBO has something that PFH doesn’t have. Also the highs on HBO aren’t touched by PFH, including Thank God, Snow Beach, and 1080p
Great Christmas Present to Yourself Professor !! Also Great Review as always . I actually considered Fete Des Morts AKA Dia De Las Muertos produced by Earl Sweatshirt ,or Wap Konn Joj! as a excellent prelude to Pray For Haiti . He wasn't presenting himself a mainstream artist back then, he was crafting his sound in a refined and tailored way.. It was still gritty but also this elaborate style to it.
Beautifully done... Been waiting for this review ever since I found your channel! 🙏 _"You gully? We gully, too!"_ is one of my favorite lines also. "Gully" means from the gutter/the streets, hard. _H.B.O._ is up there with _P4H_ & _Balens Cho_ for me. _Tuez-Les Tous,_ with DJ Muggs, is another favorite. Good on you for prioritizing band practice! _"I bet they find you face-down in the mainstream, floating..."_ is a call-back to the hook of Outkast's "ATLiens" track, "Mainstream".
This album is on another level compared to anything in his catalogue, in my honest opinion. When I first heard HBO, my mind was blown. Thank you for the proper review Professor. Mach-Hommy is an icon, end quote.
Yeah, I'm going to be that guy you mentioned. August Fanon has produced no less than 10 projects in the past couple years. 😂 Would love to hear a review on his 2021 collaboration with Defcee: We Dressed The City With Our Names.
HBO grows on you more and more over time. As much as I love Bulletproof Luh, Wap Konn Joj, and others. HBO is just priceless and it’s not easy to fully appreciate it in one or even ten complete listens. Appreciate the review. Keep Mach reviews coming. I appreciate the translations and discussion of obscure references.
“You gully, we gully too” is similar to his reference in Mach’s Hard Lemonade. “Jigga looking gully in that jawn like Vicky” It’s sort of a reference to a Jay Z song “feeling it” being gully means to be tough, street, raw.
That’s kind of a reach. It’s closer to referencing Raekwon in “Incarcerated Scarfaces”. Every the after bars have the similar assonance and both referencing cash “You got guns, we got guns too/ What up son duke(do)/ You wanna battle for cash and see who sons who(Sun Tzu)/“ vs “You gully, we gully too/ You making funny moves with shake 'n ease/ We making money (move)/“
It’s easy to see why anyone wouldn’t think PFH is the better of the two. But trust, HBO is one of those art forms that need your time, it’s that special. NONE of PFH’s highs touch HBO’s. August Fanon’s production especially👌🏾
HBO and The Spook... def the 2 hardest imo. August and Knxwledge were the best fit with Mach. Along with Camoflauge Monk, Fahim, Nicholas Craven, Alchemist and now Conductor Williams
Fanon still is a sharp producer and has not fell off by any means. He just hasn't worked with mach in awhile ,but I'm pretty sure they're cool with one another.
Such a well articulated break down of the album. I just got into Mach Hommy and I found your insight to be eye opening to May things that went over my head yet I still enjoyed. Now I have more reasons to appreciate 🧬🙏🏽
“Mad man, All hope abandoned, Ye who enter’s through the velvet, Rope-a-dope *a pen man*, Your weakness proceeds your hand when, Opposable thumbs, can only separate ____ from drum pattering, I break bread when I recite, Right? Shattered em, Glass jaw babbling hype for gun battling” I believe Mach is saying whoever enters into his ring is gonna have a hard time as he’s gonna be throwing missing punches at effective penman ship. He makes money as he recited words, he shatters his opponents since they have glass jaws and they only hype and talk shit if its gunplay because they’ll get fucked up if its hands only and Mach trusts his fists. Very creative song lyrically and sonically, kudos to Hommy & Fanon.
Been working on my review on your album with D-Track over the last week. Hopefully it will help it get more attention in the anglophone world. (I ended up falling down a TH-cam rabbit hole and watched some interview with Robert Nelson for an hour!)
Amazing video. If you're looking for another Zappa sample, MF DOOM and Madlib sampled him multiple times. I think the best known ones are Meat Grinder off Madvillainy which samples Sleeping In A Jar by The Mothers of Invention, Beef Rapp and Gumbo off MM... FOOD sample Would You Like A Snack? by Zappa
AVAA, I know I’m a couple years late but to answer your question regarding Zappa samples in hip-hop: MF DOOM samples him for the track Gumbo, technically he also samples him on Beef Rapp but it isn’t incorporated into the beat itself. Madlib also samples him on the intro to Meat Grinder. Dilla samples just his voice on the song Mash.
Infinite respect for you Prof for all you that do, but ESPECIALLY for letting your son's band rehearse in your basement. Make sure they have hearing protection!
Maurys are a type of shoe. In the 03-06 it was seen as a flex to have a pair of Maurys but if you had a pair of Prada world Cups that was seen as a tier above.
and after listening to f you again, i really think he's talking about different guns, putting the bandana on the gun to avoid fingerprints, allusions to spraying. and then at the end of the song hes asking for ingredients that sound like theyre for body disposal, i wouldnt know nothing abt that tho. main reason i think this tho is coz on Bloody Penthouse, he says the girl is blacker than a oven, but he thinks shes Russian, her homegirl from Czech Republic, bust it. idk with rap, you can make the oven, heater association, guns coming from Russia, and then the bust it kind of affirms it for me.
watching the twilight zone episode, its about a town with 128 dead people, and a man comes into town claiming to bring people back to life. after showing proof that hes resurrected them, they all pay him to keep them dead. he turns out to be a conman working with an actor! final twist: they really do come back in the end. feels like a supreme haitian metaphor, espcially with the hints towards voodoo. mach-hommy a genius🤷♂
Action bronson (longtime, frequent and one of the best Alchemist collaborators) has made many references to mutombo too. Before HBO on "no time", and after hbo on 'Picasso ear'. Id really like to see you review some action bronson too... you'd love it
love the review, I disagree slightly about comparing it to pray for Haiti but value everything said nonetheless, by the way if anyone was looking, the snow beach sample(my favorite song on the album) is a song called child by 21st century
not everyone sees it this way, he's providing context in order to better analyze the music here so there's a different intention than sample snitching. that being said I understand the idea behind sample snitching and I don't really pick a side with it. I just wish it wasn't so black and white.
In a world where these dudes need rainbow hair and lil in their name to get on as a rapper, here we have someone whose so skilled he did it without ever showing you his face. Give this man his flowers while hes alive because everybody cant be an anonymous rapper. I can only imagine what people told mach when he said yeah im gonna rap and never show my face, u know people called him crazy.
1. Producer’s name is a tribute to Frantz Fanon, a French West Indian psychiatrist and political philosopher. 2. To find out who sampled which artist, there is a website, who sampled, that can be used as a research resource.
You ain’t never played no chicken catcha’ tore, pitchin dimes with them nickles (n*****) with the pistol packin shorty, Commmmme meteoric you had the Maury’s, I had the Pradas with the air holes The Fantasia Mickey Mouse Gabbana's N***as wish they had a pair of those, ergo I put that on my mama I put that on my honor, we the sh*t You had to switch me out of bed, well, there it go… In and out the building Mach Hommy Prince attire, wavy ting Haiti spring, we bout to kill 'em ILLLLL verse if you was doing your thing in HS and sometimes… for me, college. And yeah, Mach is a hood, polyglot, genius.
He did it! Keep the Mach-Hommy reviews coming.

Love what you’re mostly talking about. You lost me on 1080P tho. Thats def one of the standouts on this project.
You feel me
Mach's true magnum opus to me will always be the G.A.T., if that ever makes it onto streaming I can not wait to see your review
Facts
I just discovered G.A.T. in the past few months after running P4H and HBO pretty much every day, and I'm blown away. It's not as accessible but the jazzy production and the abstract rhyme schemes are just so incredible. Creeping up my top mach albums
If yall like hip hop check out BOOMANSANTO! n ASJP
Hell yes to another hour of Mach commentary!
Bey Six gotta be my favorite track, that hook is just so dope
Perfect song
I hate that track no lie.. my fav is trezeta air max
1080p one of my favorite mach songs ever!
Crazy how Mach fan’s opinion deviate from each other so much. Not the biggest fan of 1080p but I love the beat.
I really didn’t realize I could love this album more than I already did but you fucking did it!
Dude your find of the twilight zone sample is amazing how much of the beat than in it is crazy. Always love sample sources. Great find.
Had the flu (confirmed not covid) this Christmas and haven’t gotten to celebrate yet. Thanks for the first gift of 2021 Christmas prof skye!
Get well soon man!
Glad you're okay! I ended up getting covid but it was spectacularly mild.
Fanon used to be Mach’s main producer, him & Mach work best together but they haven’t made any music together in over 3 years, he produced Bulletproof Luh, Luh Hertz& The GAT
His top 3.
Wow I didn't know August fanon did all those
@@yOGlohe did 11 songs
I love your output on Mach, we are very lucky to share this with everyone currently. I am so lucky to be alive right now!!
Siuuuuuuu. Christmas is finally here. Thanks for doing this mane, cant wait to watch.

bey six is so disgustingly good and one of my favorite songs ever
@@ugonwigwe5136 Fr should’ve mentioned that too the majority of HBO is peak music which Mach has rarely touched since
th-cam.com/video/Nx6uf2TkmkE/w-d-xo.html
Trezeta air max is my fav track off it

Glad to see you’re exploring his back catalouge! This one’s a classic.
This album is on another level compared to anything in his catalogue, in my honest opinion. When I first heard HBO, my mind was blown. Thank you for the proper review Professor. Mach-Hommy is an icon, end quote.
2 years ago he got his Python Trench coat
Only other Zappa sample I can think of is the Mothers' "Sleeping in a Jar" sampled on Madvillain's "Meat Grinder"
Yeah, I'm going to be that guy you mentioned. August Fanon has produced no less than 10 projects in the past couple years. 😂 Would love to hear a review on his 2021 collaboration with Defcee: We Dressed The City With Our Names.
"Flip you like"
Tsss 1080p and Thank God are sooooooo hard to me!
There is no bad song on that album, but the two you just mentioned are just so raw, yet so refined.
HBO grows on you more and more over time. As much as I love Bulletproof Luh, Wap Konn Joj, and others. HBO is just priceless and it’s not easy to fully appreciate it in one or even ten complete listens. Appreciate the review. Keep Mach reviews coming. i recommend the project “eastern medicine, western illness” it’s a great project about hong kong and features mach hommy twice
That project is just chef's kiss.
23:42 Mauri’s are a Italian “designer” shoe popular amongst rappers in the 00’s
can’t believe you found that sample 🤯
Showing that plenty sample made my day. What an awesome flip.
“You gully, we gully too” is similar to his reference in Mach’s Hard Lemonade. “Jigga looking gully in that jawn like Vicky”

Goon grizzle goes hard too .. even tho he made that tape in 2004 it still very heavy
Great video and excellent review Professor.
August Fanon praise 👏 love to see it
Fanon still is a sharp producer and has not fell off by any means. He just hasn't worked with mach in awhile ,but I'm pretty sure they're cool with one another.
love tha videos!!🙌🆙
Such a well articulated break down of the album. I just got into Mach Hommy and I found your insight to be eye opening to May things that went over my head yet I still enjoyed. Now I have more reasons to appreciate 🧬🙏🏽
Meat Grinder off of Madvillainy uses a Frank Zappa sample, Sleeping in a Jar by The Mothers of Invention
Btw. Mach is 39, he’s soon to be 40 in the summer.
Damn really?
1080p might be one of my favorites on the album wtf
I agree about Gunn and Mach being on another level for Pray for Haiti. That and Balens Cho are my favorite Mach records.
u have to listen to the GAT by mach hommy that is his best album
Great review! Thank you
Gully means 'tough' basically
Great review and breakdown! BTW I’m interpreting “eau-de-toi” as spilled blood… water of you, your blood (somebody getting shot on the boulevard)
Thank God is probably one of my favorite mach hommy songs along with others like stellar ray theory, self luh, and kriminel
thanks for putting me on to mach hommy
“Mad man,

gully in slang terms means “in the gutter” or from the streets, so I wouldn’t recommend using that term too casually
mic quality is supreme
DUMP GAWD

The legendary MF DOOM has rapped over Zappa before, "Meat Grinder" samples a Mothers of Invention song!
what timeline am I on, so glad this project is getting attention
You should review a Your Old Droog record.
when you said being nervous listening to HBO, i felt that. I liked bullet proof luh so much.
Woahh sick, do old KA releases.
*Honor Killed the Samurai.*
Thank you
Amazing video. If you're looking for another Zappa sample, MF DOOM and Madlib sampled him multiple times. I think the best known ones are Meat Grinder off Madvillainy which samples Sleeping In A Jar by The Mothers of Invention, Beef Rapp and Gumbo off MM... FOOD sample Would You Like A Snack? by Zappa
As to your opinion of 1080p, "my ****** thought it was just a song, that tore my shit to shards"
Maury gator shoes vs Prada sneakers
AVAA, I know I’m a couple years late but to answer your question regarding Zappa samples in hip-hop: MF DOOM samples him for the track Gumbo, technically he also samples him on Beef Rapp but it isn’t incorporated into the beat itself. also you’re totally wrong about the song 1080p - I hope in the years since this review you’ve grown to appreciate it.

Thank you Professor.
August Fanon is an incredible producer had a great run with an artist I like name Iceberg Theory last year.
Action bronson (longtime, frequent and one of the best Alchemist collaborators) has made many references to mutombo too. Before HBO on "no time", and after hbo on 'Picasso ear'. Id really like to see you review some action bronson too... you'd love it
Listen to Mach's Hard Lemonade, his best in my opinion
Ehh
You should do a video on Illusory Walls by The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die
29:45 gully means like grimey
1080p is weak??????????????
Hey Prof, you made me angry!😂😂😂

Professor, is Julius Scott's The Common Wind a good place to start? The Laurent Dubois book isn't aveilable in my home country :(
Madvillain sampled Frank Zappa in "Meat Grinder"
