I may have missed this answer, but what size bcb bag or basket is needed per load. If you have a video that answers this please tag the video and I'll check it out. I saw the filter you put together for this 40 but what about a 150 gallon discus community tank. Did you oversize the 40 gallon filter or is that what is required for that size tank and fish load. I know what I need for a traditional filter size per fish load but not sure with the anoxic filtration system. Thanks
A 30cm x 30cm x 20cm BCB can handle bioload of an adult koi (2-3 foot long fish that eats/poops all day!) Smaller BCBs will have less anoxic "power" but will still be great for most home aquariums. Just don't go too small. Go for the biggest size you can manage.
I don't know where to ask you this, so I'll drop it here on a current video. I've watched plenty of your videos now, and have setup a couple BCBs in my larger tanks since they have canisters. This question is about the mechanics of this anoxic area in the kitty litter: Is the anoxic bacteria growing because the thickness of the total material is restricting flow in the center of the mass? Or is it growing inside the crystalline structure of the individual pieces, as long as they aren't being hit by fast moving water? In a BCB basket, is the whole thing giving growth areas to these bacteria, or is it just the center mass (that's protected from the water speed by the outer layers)? In the substrate setup above the plenum, the kitty litter is protected by the 2+ inch layer of other substrate over top. Is that what does it? I'm curious to the mechanic, because I wanted to setup a small bag of kitty litter/iron in a HOB, but there's not a lot of space to make it very big. Would that make it entirely ineffective? Or is the kitty litter alone enough to give the growth area needed to make this anoxic bacteria? Obviously, it's not going to be as effective as a whole substrate, or a large basket in a canister. But not all my existing tanks have canisters nor do I wish to tear down their existing substrates (planted tanks).
I'm sorry Doc. I've been following your channel for a couple months and I still don't know what anoxic filtration is. Can you please explain what it is and how it works? Maybe a video about what it is?
Anoxic filtration is less about the type of filter it is and more about the zones it creates. You need to reduced oxygen to create a breeding ground for the bacteria that will complete the nitrogen cycle.
Anoxic filtration is low oxygen thriving bacteria based dinitrification process that removes nitrates (NO3) waste from your water completing the nitrate cycle in the tank. It uses plenum and substrate with to very low water flow to promote growing denitrification bacteria which does not exist in filters with standard and high waterflow. I learned it all by watching K.Novak videos, do the same.
Hi Dr. I would like to make a BCB basket to put in my canister filter & a plenum however the cat litter brands available locally are either bentonite clay with antibacterials added or Diatomite. I'm not sure of the effect of diatomite and whether it can work or not. 1) Can the diatomite be used for the bcb? 2) Alternatively would pieces of fired broken red clay pots crushed and packed in the bcb basket work? 3) Since the clay pots from the local potter are made from red clay I presume it already contains iron. If these broken clay pots are usable, would I still need to add some iron? 4) Is there a min / max quantity or weight of clay/kitty litter to be used in the bcb basket plus the plenum for a particular size of aquarium or per gallon of water in the aquarium in order to achieve an adequate level of Anoxic filtration. Thank you once again for your educative videos & guidance. These have totally changed my thinking about filtration.
Buying Zeolite I think is the alternative, you can buy this from Seachem. Having said that, I'm not sure why Seachem Flourite doesn't work as it's already high in Iron
ExtravagantFragrance he has been explaining this for quite some time. Go back to his vast selection of video’s where he goes step by step. It is very educational and interesting.
Hello Dr Novak My name is Bill, I have been watching your how to videos on building plenums and am convinced this is the way to go. So I'm gathering together all the patrs needed to assrmble a plenum for my 75 gal. Its not difficult finding all the peaces just timely since the undergravel plates only sold and shipped from China. But still doable. I noticed in recently that in your goldfish tank there is gravel between the glass and the side of the plenum was this intentional or by accident? In your videos on building a plenum you state that you don't want substrate to get under the plenum so as in my build plan im going to use window screen over my plenum base than a layer of sand, kitty litter, laterite, more sand and finally black gravel that l originally took out of my 75gal to go with a bare bottom and just plotted plants. But now I'm redoing this again to go with a plenum. I also am to use anoxic bags in my HOB filter. Do you have any other suggestions for my plan?? Thank you Dr. For sharing you filteration methods. I am planning on setting up tank with plenum and BCB for my Denison barbs I wonder if they will breed 🤔. I know nothing of their breeding behaviours and requirements, congrats Dr Novak if that is the only down side.
I have an anoxic setup that's been running for years in my 55 gallon tank. incidentally, now a goldfish tank (trying to raise blue goldfish). the substrate looks different than this albeit new tank in the video- mine is brown like dirt. stupid question: is that normal? lol
So, as far as I understand and the results of my setting shows putting BCB bags or basket in canister filter for bare bottom tanks don't work in terms of Nitrate reduction! I have set up two large canister filters one with a basket and the other with 4 large bags (as explained in your previous videos with exactly the same materials), but they just work like conventional filtration systems! I still have a very high Nitrate. (FYI: I'm also keeping goldfish). Is having Plenum a must for Nitrate reduction?!
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums If I don't do a water change the Nitrate goes over 40 ppm in 3-4 days. I'm changing 50% of the water every other day on my 75-gallon tank to keep it around 10-20 ppm. I set up my Eheim pro 4+-600 exactly as done by Luke and it is running for over 6 months now. I've also tested its performance on a 30-gallon tank (no fish) by adding pure ammonia to see how it works. I added ammonia to reach 1-2 ppm, then what it does is converting ammonia to nitrite in one day and then to nitrate! which basically should not work like this as you kindly explained in your previous videos. I tried different flow rates and ammonia levels but what I could get is that it is working exactly the same as my original canister worked with bio home filter media. Our tap water has around 0.5 ppm ammonia and 0.25 nitrite, but 0 nitrate (I'm living in FL), so I have to use Seacham prime as a water conditioner to reduce stress to my fish, however, on the 30-gallon test tank I used API Super Strength Aquarium Dechlorinator. I recently set up a Polar Aurora 4-Stage canister with 4 large BCB bags (as shown by you) and added it to my filtration system on the 75-gallon tank with that Eheim 4-600 (no other filter is running). Still no result on nitrate reduction. Sorry for the long comment but your kind directions may solve other people's issues as well. Thanks
