    I'm so glad you rescued this treasure. I 100% agree with removing the (dastardly polyester) backing and batting. It just needs some love---
    I'd love to rescue a quilt like this, re-batt it with cotton, and back it with an appropriate cotton reproduction and hand quilt it. I am finally a 10-to-the-inch hand quilter. Now, if I can only get to 12 stitches to the inch! Thank you for sharing this gem of a quilt. Love your videos. ❤❤❤

    I love this quilt. Every time I see an old quilt video I think, this is my favourite. No, this is my favourite now. I have a new plan. I have been gathering scraps for ages and they are outgrowing the container I have them in. I was standing in my sewing room looking around, for no particular reason, thinking I must buy a bigger container when my eyes rested on my much too large waste paper bin. hmmm, a larger container. So now it's my scrap bin and I will purchase a smaller more practical bin for my snipped threads and bin waste. Then I intend to start cutting as per your tutorial for this block and putting them into groups for sewing together. Soon I will have a production line of log cabin squares going on. I can do them when I have gathered enough cut out squares. Then, in a hundred years, haha, when I have enough squares sewn I will join them together.

    Wow! The biz, baking soda, and vinegar really cleaned the quilt. it got so white & bright after it was cleaned. It is a shame that the old fabrics didn't hold up a little better. In spite of it's age, it's still a great quilt. The maker would have been pleased to know somebody still loves the quilt!

    I love this quilt! The blues and reds are wonderful. You did the absolutely right thing in taking it apart. The red back and poly filling had to go. Not to mention the smell. Now, I hope you make a video about how you are going to fix this gem up. I have repaired a few of these by redoing the split seams and using other vintage fabric to cover the truly shattered pieces ( while trying if possible to maintain the design of dark and light). New backing, batting and binding. I know many people wouldn't want to put that much energy into a worn old quilt but I enjoy giving new life to these old darlings. Thank you for the great video.

    Log cabin quilts are great old fashioned looking pieces!! I love them so much but I have never made one yet. Need to get off my bright color kick (which has lasted about 2 years now) and make one!! I bought some flashback fabrics from the 40’s I guess it is. Looks like remakes of the old feed sacks. To me, using old or repurposed fabric for quilting is deeply satisfying. If all those fabrics could speak and tell stories about where they have been... and now are lovingly reassembled. It is like they are finding new friends or family to be with. It does not feel the same to use new fabric to me... As a human who has experienced loss and betrayal and pain so deep there are just not words (or at least I can't find them), I like the 'spiritual' aspect of recreating new quilts. Creating beauty, warmth and not knowing what life this quilt will have down the road.... it is all good to me.
    I made my first quilt after seeing the work of the women of GEE'S BEND (Alabama).
    I came here from Dave's Craft Room! - usa

    Super cool quilt! Tonight I've been looking up log cabin quilts - the last video I watched mentioned they're usually constructed clockwise (?) unless lefthanded and it's more comfortable ... I noticed your quilt has some counterclockwise, maybe the maker was a lefty? And I had to laugh when you pointed out some foundation back was pieced ... 'cause you know she said to herself "this won't matter, nobody will ever see this" (over 1,200 views in 6 hours - lol) and WOW, 1/2-inch logs,,,, with scissors! Ahh-mazing! Great find, thanks for sharing, I like its aged look and glad it found you.

      This mades me laugh for so many reasons! My husband and I had this HUGE conversation (this is the stuff we talk about after 30+ years of being together! 😂) about whether it was constructed clockwise or not, depending on how it was held and put together since it was on a foundation. LOL! He seems to think it was constructed clockwise, making the maker a leftie (as you suspect). Great question! The other think that made me chuckle is the making thinking no one would see the base! 😂😂😂 So true! Thank you for sharing this!

Late 1800’s? Earlier? Then a family member found them in an old chest that had been stored away and nearly forgotten and decided to finish the top into a comforter. Kris, you are a brave woman for bringing home a quilt that stunk that bad. I agree with your discarding the batt and back. Can you talk more about the Bizz, vinegar and baking soda? I've never heard of Bizz. Is the vinegar to stop bleeding or to kill mold?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Honestly, I didn't think it stunk when I bought it! When I brought it in the house, however, it almost knocked me over! 🤢 As for the solutions I use, it all depends on the amount of dirty, how back it smells, and how much of a risk I am willing to take. I LOVE Biz. It is usually my go-to, although some of these comments are making me want to try Oxyclean again. I think Biz is only sold at Walmart, but I could be wrong. That's where I purchase it, however. I also have Fels-Naptha soap, washing soda, etc. in my list of favorites. It really just depends. As for the baking soda and vinegar, I guess they cancel each other out, so I am going to play with not using them together for a bit and see how it work. It is always trial and error. I wish I could give everyone the "right" formula. Hope this helps a little! My best advice is to test in an area before using something on the entire quilt, and to start with a conservative solution before adding a bunch of chemicals. That said, I am always remembering that these quilts were probably washed in lye-based soaps in their lifetimes, so I feel most of the stuff we use today (sans fragrance and dyes) aren't going to harm these beauties!

    I love Biz too, but it’s hard to find where I live. It’s great for body odors and grass stains. When stains remain in old tablecloths after I’ve done a Biz soak and then a rinse, I switch to an Oxi-clean soak. That can help a little more. I’ve found that some stains will become less noticeable, but they are never truly gone. I use Spray ‘n Wash Stain Stick on food oils and ointment soils.

The one I used in the video probably wasn't the best because you can't see the two holes the ties left. This is a great thought, however, and I will be on the look out for this in the future! Since it is made out of wool, I kind of think it’s finished even though it has no backing and you can see all the stitching like with yours now that you have taken the back off.
    Yours really does look 1800s, or early 1900s. I think the red in the center might be turkey red.
    You might want to research and see whether that kind of quilt was considered completed as is. I think mine was.

      I am sure I will be doing another log cabin video in the future. I will try to remember to include that. In the meantime, here's a great link that can help:quiltsocial.com/the-many-ways-to-arrange-log-cabin-blocks-on-your-quilt/
      I love that you have wool one! I have a tutorial on this block, too, where I show using a fabric foundation like this one. They are so much fun to make!
      I don't know if I included this in the video or not (can't remember if it was edited out!), but the blocks are put together by machine. Now it still could have been done when it was initial made (domestic sewing machines came into common use in the early 1900s), but it could have been assembled later. I have a few quilts in my collection like what you are talking about and have done a few videos on them. I completely agree it is possible, but I feel it was a top (or blocks) that were either assembled later or never were finished. I really wish these quilts could talk! LOL!
      Thank you so much for the ideas, for watching, and for sharing! 🥰

    This technique of sewing strips on a foundation square is called a manx quilt. Its a very old technique of pre scissors. Quilters would rip strips using their teeth. They used a foundation piece for e ate A warmth before days of batting g

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance ปีที่แล้ว

      I would tend to agree with you, but there aren't any pleats. Don't Manx quilts have folds in the piecing? This is, in part, a Manx construction, but I am reluctant to call it a Manx quilt because of the lack of folds. Hmmmm. I did think of that when I was researching this quilt, but I knew I would get push back if I declared it a manx block. What do you think? Is it still a Manx without the folds? I would love to hear your thoughts on this! 🥰

      Me too! I think it is a great observation, however, and I hope you don't think I am challenging you in any way (a friend said I was being rude--not my intent AT ALL!). I am always learning and love to hear from people about this stuff! I can't wait to see what people say. It definitely seems like it is at least inspired by a Manx quilting technique, but who knows? Such a great question! LOL! I'll have to make a video about this because I am asked often. Well, the short answer is I have them in every spot imaginable round my house! 😂 Layered on beds, under beds, on ladders (I have four!) around my house, folded on shelves, rolled in baskets, and some in storage (dry and safe--not in attics or damp basements). I even have some stored at family members' houses! I have SO many! I really need to start selling them, but which ones? Every time I think about selling one, I can't decide which to sell! I think I am an old quilt hoarder! 😂

    Let me guess - if this quilt was "on display" in someone's house, I bet there was a heavy smoker living there and the stench was that of accumulated tobacco smoke, a truly revolting stench, and one that the people displaying the quilt were so used to that they wouldn't notice it! (Hard to imagine them living with it if the smell was from sweat or sewage...) Congrats on getting it clean! I hope you can find some way of preserving it.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be! I know she said her mom had it on display for years and years. I am not sure if they were smokers. There was some yellowing which makes me think they could have been. As for the smell, it was more like a musty basement mixed with body odor smell. 🤢 Tough to even type that! LOL! I am sure there was all kinds of grossness in this one. It was bad! I hope I can find a way to preserve it, too! I am not sure how with the holes and tears, but I am going to think about how to best serve this quilt and its maker. ❤️
