One of the fondest memories of my childhood is the time spent with my mom doing the dinner dishes every evening. It was our time to talk and share thoughts.💕

Beautiful. I had this experience in my late teens and twenties with non-members of my core family, not quite given up on hoping to establish that some day with my daughters or even finally with their father, although neither of our families of origin seems to have understood how to make dishwashing attractive and social.
      Thanks for rekindling my hope.

Oh, and I have to share that at the age of 64, I have finally mastered keeping up with the dishes and not leaving them to pile up. About a year ago, I was inspired by something Dawn, the Minimal Mom said about treating your kitchen like a vacation rental, and I started doing my dishes as I used them. I have now done my dishes every day for over a year! And that is a really big deal for me! Thanks for the tips.

My suggestion is to store the dishes near where they are washed. It's amazing how much easier it is to put the dishes away. My dish cupboard is right above the dishwasher.

Hi Rachel, I'm from Australia and notice a lot of the youtubers I watch in the USA don't wash up like we do. They have the water running the whole time and use a lot of soap for each item to run under the water. Here in Australia, we are taught to fill the sink with hot water and some squirts of dishwashing liquid and wash the items and then dry them straight away with a tea towel and put them away. I was taught to do glasses, mugs, cutlery, plates then gross stuff. A lot of people here are now using dishwashers which we never used to have. I've never had a dishwasher till we moved to this house, but I am so used to hand washing the dishes, I continue to do so (my husband and I do it - as we like talking about our days) and only use the dishwasher if we have lots of visitors and I can't be bothered washing them. Funny how everyone in the world is different! Best wishes to you, love watching your videos. Jo xx

I dont have a dishwasher. There is just 2 adults and a dog living in my house.
Here is what I have learned so far:
I never used gloves until I started watching you and I love them! I can use really hot water that helps air dry quicker and my hands dont touch the gross stuff. It has only taken me 65 years to learn this and I grew up watching "playtex living gloves" commercials.
Also as I move to declutter I am allowing 2 glasses, 2 coffee mugs, 2 cereal bowls and 2 dinner plates in my cupboard where my husband can see. I am keeping 6 servings total but hiding the rest because my husband can easily use 4 to 5 cups a day and several plates and leaving them everywhere around the house. Hopefully limiting the available vessels will help.
Also I dont know where the silverware keeps going- I think he is throwing it away so maybe if we have just 2 forks etc. in the drawer I will find out what is happening.
I still have the silver punch bowl and cups but it is in a China cabinet. :)

I'm now elderly and live alone and, even though I have a dishwasher, I don't use it in the conventional way. I use it as my drying rack. haha I was taught by my grandma (who raised me) to wash glasses first, followed by silverware and dishes. Pots and pans are always last. You're probably way too young to remember the old wringer clothes washing machines, but to conserve the hot water (it took a long time to empty and refill the machine), she would wash the least dirty items first such as dishtowels, followed by bath towels, sheets, white or light colored clothing, then Grandad's work clothes. There was a two tub rinse to put items through. Man, the water was HOT! You had to use a stick to lift the items out of the wash tub to put through the wringer but everything came out sparkling clean. The only modern day machines that clean like that are the ones without the agitator in the middle.

My Mum had one, a second hand one gifted to her by her friend. I remember Mum washing clothes using the scrubbing board prior to being gifted the washing machine. Mum didn't buy a new, modern version until 1992 when 'old faithful' (as she called it) would no longer work.

I like the way you get your kids to help out. Good philosophy. We didn't force our kids either, but we did write all the chores on index cards. We would sit down at the table periodically and let each kid take the cards they were willing to be responsible for. Whatever was left, my husband and I divided. The kids were never saddled with a chore forever.

Great video Rachel! I learned a tip the other day that has really changed how I dry my dishes from the dishwasher . After the cycle is done and the dishwasher is on the drying cycle, just open the door and put a dry dish towel on the inside of the door leaving the top of the towel sticking out. Close the door and Walk away. Come back in about 10 min or so and all the dishes will be dry!!! Hope this helps someone!🤓🌸👍

Your videos are always fun to watch. I use a dishwasher every day, and off load every day too so that works for me. Where I fall down is having to wait until later in the evening to do the supper dishes, because the significant 'other' likes us both to sit down to watch a movie right away. I know I could change this, by not sitting down until dishes are done but it would take an adjustment and I am lazy!!! But I think I will try it for a week and see how many ripples it does make. It could be in my head!!

I have a wonderful dishwasher, but hand wash through out the day. This way everything is always clean when we need them. Washing just one or a few things is so easy. I don't like to fill the sink with water and wash the dishes that way, to me once you start washing even a few dishes, the water is dirty. When making a big holiday type meal, I do wash and clean up as I go. My Mom taught me to do that. It makes all the difference. Good video as always tfs 🥰💐🌷🌵🌺🌞🏜️💗✝️

After a lifetime of hand washing dishes I finally got a dishwasher. Now I never have dirty dishes in my kitchen, I just put everything in the dishwasher immediately and start it as soon as it’s full. @@KaoXoni I wash my dishes by hand. I don't know about dishwashers, but I imagine it would be the same. I use a dish drainer with a bin for silverware. I always make sure the pointy ends of sharp knives are down.
Many years ago, when my brother's girlfriend (now wife) was helping with dishes at our parent's house, she was putting the sharp knives in with the points up. I had learned in 6th grade home ec class a few years prior not to do that because it's dangerous. By putting the pointy end down, you grab the handle, not the blade, when you remove them to put them away. I put other utensils in with the handle down, but you aren't likely to slice yourself with a spoon, a fork, or a table knife the way you could with a sharp knife.
When I wash my large knife, I lay it in the drain because it would topple out of the silverware draining bin, but I still make sure the sharp edges are positioned in a safe manner.
Like you, I wash the knives separately instead of putting them in with other dishes. Safety first.
