I feel like this may be one of the more important things a player can learn. To be able to go through these progressions without having to think much about it can open the guitar up like nothing else.
I found a video that taught where to find the 1-7 positions and their maj min qualities a little differently, but without a doubt this is one of the most important and fulfilling things I've learned in guitar theory and lessons. I wish more tube tutors would teach this. After learning this I was able to play most of the songs my church plays without looking up the chords. I listened to or remembered how it goes. Listened for the key. Tested out the 145 and got the jist of the song. By the next week I filled in the other straggler chords and boom. The rest is history. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining the “theory” and making it understandable. I am definitely going to check out your other videos. I am a 63 year old wannabe guitarist. I am going back to it!
I'm a lead player and I often forget that jazz chords are a thing even though I love them! Definitely want to see more jazzy chord progression stuff from you as this was insanely helpful! :D
Owen556 for real. 7 chords are the best. When I picked up a 7 string guitar and was messing around with chords shapes I just naturally gravitated to some big 7th chords without thinking about it.
This was amazing... I've been making music for 18 years on and off but I never cared about music theory, now I'm getting into writing songs and you just made this thing so easy to understand for "already"-musicians but I think also for people who do not have a lot of knowledge about music.
late to this one but this is awesome. You're taking years of misunderstanding the guitar and explaining all these concepts in simple, easy to follow detail. Thanks for your help with this!
About the dots... I just noticed that if you stay on the E string for the 3 chord, you keep to the dots for that chord too. This whole video was a great way to recognize the 1/4/5 inherent in 12 bar blues bar chords. All hail the dots! (Thanks Sean!)
BRO I HAVE TO SAY IT ONCE AGAIN YOUR A BEAST !!! This video has done Wonders for me in my playing and my newly Song writing project....By the way meeting with the teacher I decided to go with I'll let you know how it goes thanks for the tips on picking one again
I did this a different way, more complete I think? You have IMO to be able to put the index finger anywhere and that’s the one, note and chord. Start on each individual string that’s the proverbial pathway up the neck. To do this I used 3 note triads. There is one for each string. Same way of course 3 maj 3 min 1 dim. Now you can play the major scale from anywhere and you’ll quickly be navigating the whole octave . Great lesson
Best way to learn harmonizing. Learn modern metalcore music like Bullet for my Valentine or Killswitch Engage. Nothing but constant harmonies in 3rds and 5ths :p That's how I picked it up. Now it just comes naturally for using those harmonies with any lead and rhythm :p
How come you so suPerFly? HuH!? Such a huggyBoots kinda teacher! Fun, informative, and so harmoniously thorough! Thanks for the lessons, I'm getting so good learnin from you.
Thank you for sharing your skills, weeks later I can remember the stuff you taught. , for instance modal playing . What about a course about inverted chords, --I like smooth transitions, Kind Regards Thomas
Thanks for the lesson Sean! Could we perhaps get a video for those just starting out on improvising on backing tracks like me? I feel that most of the time there is a lack of feel in my playing as I apply the scales and I feel 'lost?'. Thanks!
I love your videos, the work you're doing is amazing. I'm learning a lot with your lessons but I started teaching myself how to play guitar just a few months ago and I'm having a hard time with the right technique to play scales, I mean a can play scales the same way you did with G major at 0:40, but I've seen that blues players use a different technique much faster to play the pentatonic scales, I didn't find any video explaining the right technique on youtube. Could you do a video about it?
That's a great idea for a video stay tuned. I don't think there is any right technique, everybody kind of sees it a little differently but I'll try and break it down :)
Sean Daniel thanks ! so something like : I minor / II Major / III Major / IV minor / V minor / VI major / VII major ? if so, then what became of the preference of the VI to become m7b5 ? and what become for instance of the 6th chord who are preferred to be played on the II nd note of a scale ? (if I get right your lesson on the phrygian scale ?)
You take each melody note and fit it into the definitive chords; the chords that define the scale, being the I IV & V. Everything in the major scale fits into the I IV or V. In C Maj------- C belongs to the I or IV with C With the root of C or 5th of F as melody note.----- D belongs to G major (V) using the 5th of G Maj------ E belongs to the C (I) with the 3rd of C------- F belongs to F (IV) with the Root as melody note----- G belongs to C (I) or G (V) with the 5th of C or root of G---- A belongs to F (IV) with 3rd as melody note----- B belongs to G (V) with the 3rd as melody note. That is how you actually harmonize the maj scale. Plural substitutes are used to control the bass and add a slightly different contour to the melody note.
That was i need for today ! thx ! anyone knows how to harmonize altered chords - dominant blues chords - augment and all this weird stuff??? we have to learn them !
Hey Sean, thanks for your great lesson. Maybe I didn't understand that in your video, but why are especially the first, the fourth and the fifth notes turn into major chords and the second, the third and the sixth notes turn into minor chords?
So good. I'm curious about your motivation to do these videos. I know TH-cam pays ... eventually. But the time you put in must be immense. Anyway, I'm glad this channel is up. I hope you're able to get a set of strings now and then, or some really nice cheeses for your platters with whatever you earn. Actually, I think I'll go have some cheese now. That's a great idea.
Thanks for reaching out Jeremy. I think starting the channel was a good idea for a lot of reasons. I mean it does pay some (not quite enough to make me want to actually calculate the hours and divide by the money yet, but enough to show promise for the future). But it's also been a good way to build a base of followers to have when I release projects or other creative content. And since I teach privately, it's a great resource to be able to give my students as a supplemental thing. But above all, I genuinely just wanted to make it easier for people who were having the same difficulties I was when I was trying to teach myself all this. The theory was something I never really understood and everytime I asked someone I had no idea what they were trying to explain to me, so my goal was to just make videos that my younger self would be able to understand :)
Sean Daniel it makes me sad how many guitar players don't fake time to learn theory. I think you do a great job sprinkling in theory to the lesson but in an easily applicable way.
Rare combo of great teaching and being genuinely funny and entertaining.
Thanks so much Jim!

So cool to hear! Totally agree with you, it's probably the most important thing to understand music theory wise. Glad it helped!
Thank you for explaining the “theory” and making it understandable. I am definitely going to check out your other videos. I am a 63 year old wannabe guitarist. I am going back to it!
you are a wizard my friend.
He is, and he actually responds to people too! Totally tops.
Thanks so much guys!
Great Lesson. I have wondered about why songs use major 7 versus dom 7 chords for so long. Thank you for this articulate explanation.
happy to help!
Literally the best TH-camr. Serving the world of guitarist.
I'm a lead player and I often forget that jazz chords are a thing even though I love them! Definitely want to see more jazzy chord progression stuff from you as this was insanely helpful! :D
Right on man, stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Owen556 for real. 7 chords are the best. When I picked up a 7 string guitar and was messing around with chords shapes I just naturally gravitated to some big 7th chords without thinking about it.
I cannot express enough how beneficial showing the diagrams with finger placements helps me. Great lesson Southern man.
awesome lesson, the major seventh chords are really smooth, it makes you pick guitar and play even when you are lazy.

Been looking for ages for someone to finally explain this properly. Awesome job & great channel!
Thanks so much! I'll keep em coming!

Great lesson, how about a lesson on harmonizing the minor scale. Thank you
How come you so suPerFly? HuH!? Such a huggyBoots kinda teacher! Fun, informative, and so harmoniously thorough! Thanks for the lessons, I'm getting so good learnin from you.
So great to hear Matt! Keep it electroshizzle.
Can you harmonise a major scale then used the caged system to practise chord progressions? Not seen that anywhere before? Great lesson again!!
Thanks, l find it so helpful
So great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your skills, weeks later I can remember the stuff you taught. , for instance modal playing . What about a course about inverted chords, --I like smooth transitions,

Oh great idea Thomas, I'll put that on the video list!
Thanks man.
Thanks for the lesson Sean!

Great idea Aman, I'll try and work something up.
Enlightening~
You're a genius.
Thanks so much!
You started playing Fast Car there for a second
Definitely a great song!
I fucking love your Intros.
Cool video man, what is that thing you do with your right hand? Do you have a lesson for that?
Working on it!
Sean Daniel cool like that, thanks for sharing the knowledge

(Jokingly) I've never wanted to punch someone in the face so bad as I did in the first few seconds of this video. Lol.
another great one. What about the minor though scale ?
You can think of the minor scale as just starting on that 6th note of the major scale. All the chords are the same.
Sean Daniel thanks !
so something like :
I minor / II Major / III Major / IV minor / V minor / VI major / VII major ?

Sean I have a question. If you use a major7 chord in a progression should the rest of the chords in the progression be major7 voicings too?
Plural substitutes are used to control the bass and add a slightly different contour to the melody note.
this is sorcery...where is my fork when i need it !
Thanks.
No prob Lee
