btw, Egypt will never replace farmlands for development reasons, Sherif was super wrong about it. All action takes place in the desert in newly reclaimed farmlands, supported by new highways, roads, and railroads. Old farmlands along the Nile is so precious that no one ever would even think of replacing them.

@@FlorenceRyan lol. Just biked 12 miles to GW Bridge and back, total of about 25 miles in just under 2 hours. The last mile or so before the bridge has a very steep incline, thought I was going to die (and I didn't bring any water with me...), but alast I made it and couldn't be happier.
Haven't biked at all in a bunch of years and before that was just as a kid in the neighborhood, never done any real biking before and didn't think I could do this, but somehow I managed, it was truly magical.
Thank you so much for the inspiration!
I'm going back to the middle east soon, I'm thinking that I'll try to find a smallish county that I can bike across (off my head thinking about Jordan, but obviously not yet sure how practical it is).

I'm completely dead and it'll probably be my last time doing this, as I'm traveling this weekend and leaving the country immediately afterwards.

Amazing. And ridiculous (the police attitude that is). One of your best films. Well done for managing to deal with all of this. It's a great shame that the police there are actually being so counter productive towards the country...
Take a look at Ed Pratts tandem film where he shows the gear he uses for filming on a bike. You may not be able to rig it up the same but it might make things easier if you could fashion some sort of arm to hold a camera.

Sharif is Egyptian and he wasn't allowed to cycle without an escort. Rob has a L:ebanese accent so I think people can hear the difference. Plus we're on bikes, I think we stand out and people immediately assume we're foreigners... rightly so I guess haha

The irony in your comment is that she ended up riding in the dark on dangerously crowded highways precisely BECAUSE of the constant presence and interference of the police. Had they been left alone, they would have left early in the morning and planned to arrive at their destination long before sunset (as all cyclists generally try to do). As an occasional cyclist myself, I can tell you that that is the normal daily routine for a trip like this: leave as early as possible to enjoy the sunrise, cool weather, and quiet times and arrive early at your destination. But the police delayed their departure and then kept them waiting for long periods throughout the day. And THAT led to them riding in the dark. It was far from their choice.
Honestly, I don't think you paid much attention to the video.
Plus, I can guarantee you that this won't happen anywhere else on their journey in Africa. There will be other problems, but they will be free to cycle unmolested by the police in all the other countries. This happens only in Egypt. Egypt is famous among long-distance cyclists for this problem. Many independent travellers choose never to go to Egypt because they see so many stories like this one.
As Florence said many times throughout the video, she and her companions would have been more than happy to come to a compromise and continue their journey with a police escort for their safety. However, the police were so heavy-handed, illogical, and inefficient that they caused constant delays and problems for them and tried to control where they went and where they slept. And that's what led to the frustration. It wasn't the police escort per se that was the problem. It was the way it was implemented.
If the Egyptian authorities are so concerned about the safety of cyclists (to protect their overall tourism industry and tourism income), why not assign a single police officer on a scooter or motorcycle to accompany them? That's all that would be required. And this police officer could accompany them (quietly and discretely) everywhere they went and make sure they were okay. That would have worked out fine, and these cyclists probably would have adopted the police officer and made him one of the team. Unfortunately, the over-the-top nature of their police escort caused them so much trouble.
