Linux and Freecad , running on a 14-year-old I3 computer While it may not be Formula 1 or aerospace level , its ok for a daily driver , brackets, space gears, assembly etc ... and as the name suggest ,,,its "free" however its nice if you put back into the community

Interesting, but I have to say my BS alarm starts going off when somebody talks about eliminating the need for physical prototyping. One of the industries highlighted - automotive - still uses clay models for finalizing the body of a car. And even very expensive industries like aerospace still test aircraft before going into production (hence the continued existence of test pilots).

Hi, it's certainly true that many industries still require physical prototypes for the final stages of the design process but virtual testing tools such as SIMULIA play an important part in those industries by reducing the amount of prototype iterations required. We'll be releasing a similar "What is SIMULIA?" video shortly where we can go more in depth into this topic. Also, if you're interested, this short video on our website also highlights some of the ways the aerospace industry test fluid dynamics with SIMULIA - www.solidsolutions.co.uk/solidworks-videos/evaluating-aircraft-aerodynamic-performance-with-simulia.aspx

@@TriMechGroup you're right, through simulation there's a lot of improvement in manufacture processes, and if you use a high quality software like COMSOL instead of SIMULIA you can expect realistic results instead of child's play results like in SIMULIA.

CatiaV5 was the worst CAD system I ever had to use, the UI made absolutely NO sense at all. The order of sub menues, the layout of them and the sometimes wierd sequences of clicking on things that you normally don't need using other functions, in order to get simple things done, made CatiaV5 so bad and user unfriendly, they had to write several 500 page books about it... let that sink in
I hope you put in serious time in the UI layout and design in V6

SolidWorks is more widely applicable but it depends on the industry you plan on going into after school. As discussed in the video, CATIA is often the software of choice in aerospace and automotive. SolidWorks is a good base to learn though for all 3D modeling so I’ll agree with the other commentor.

Dassault bought Solidworks in order to use the Solidworks platform for Catia V5. They’re similar but Catia has more functionality and modules. Learn Solidworks first. Then Catia won’t feel like a foreign language should you choose to pursue it.

Its amazing ow the windowing system and user interface design motief is still in the Vista era. It just looks outdated and slow. You really dont want software that looks like its going to crash. it doenst matter if it does or not, it needs to look like its not going to crash. the nicer and more modern the interface the more sales of the system.

Catia is the flagship product of one of the most absolutely terrible companies in the 3d design world. There are no resources to learn it. They want you to pay an insane amount of money to get into it.. yes, it’s good software. but other software is quickly approaching the same level. Once Boeing drops Catia this arrogance will change. Even in the ad video that dude is threatening you that if you don’t get it, you won’t be able to work with other companies. doesn’t talk about how great the software is just that won’t work because they’ve cornered the market so pay their damn bill.
