Truth about how to become an admirable mirdangam artist was revealed by Honourable Palghat Mani Iyer . "Learn little but attain the perfect execution level is the great advice of him" Small things done with perfection, dedication and attraction fetch great appreciation and stay long in the hearts and minds of rasikas and the accompanying artist. No one needs to be fearful because of little knowledge but if it is served with great finish , that is the success. Also, he stressed that successful career will come if little things are done repeatedly with perfection. It is true that he used to play a single phase continuously with supreme naatham and rhythm. PMI led simple, humble life but authoritative in rhythm world. No one can ever make a demo on rhythm like PMI. One who does not listen him lose a lot in his career and do damage to the musical world. His 1/2 century experience in rhythm world with harship is aching and he should have been protected as a national treasure. Full speech will be boon.

It is a very long speech and delivered very speedily. I am not technically sound to understand and translate so rapidly. I am giving below few general precepts which I could catch. I couldn’t understand the more technical topics to the extent of being able to summarise-
Taal is God personified because it is ‘time’ itself. All heavenly events like rising of sun happen with precision. There can’t be any variation of even tiny moment. Same is the case with Taal.
Unlike modern courses like BA etc, there isn’t a lot of syllabus to read when it comes to Indian traditional music. It is a matter of practicing over and over small snippets. These days students are high on theory and low on performance. They speak eloquently on vast range of theoretical topics but fail miserably when it comes to actual performance due to lack of tapasya. When we walk every day on a set path, we start to intuitively know the route. One should achieve same state of mastery with music when the entire composition starts to unfurl intuitively.
