It's called politics. Fucha is from a powerful tribe. That was the original reason Hongli's mother wanted him to marry her. This emperor spent his entire reign worrying about what others would say or do. Fear of offending tribes he needed to stay on good terms with, kept him from severely punishing/killing offending concubines. Had he dealt with them swiftly and completely many lives would have been spared, especially his children's.
Yep. A bunch of children and teenage girls sent to serve a bunch of two faced, backstabbing aristocrats and warlords. I low key feel bad for even the villainous members of the haram. They were all just pawns sacrificed for a powerful man and his family’s continued rule.
@@katherinkeegan8601Well put. Even the servants living in the Forbidden City come from well connected, aristocratic families. They expect their relatives at court to do whatever is necessary to enrich their clan’s wealth, resources, and reputation while gaining the emperor’s ear. Often times these courtiers are little more than children themselves. I imagine, being young teenage girls from upperclass families, the young girls coming to court must have been incredibly sheltered up until that point. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable and even frightening all the gossip, intrigue, and high stakes drama would have been to a young lady in that position.
I just noticed, after watching this clip sveral times before, that there are no footprints at all in the courtyard yet the servants are not covered in snow...
Weird question, but it's now making me itch that I've noticed it - how did the little maid know that A'Ruo wanted her to bring the rope to hang herself? Did I miss a scene where she had a chance near one of the maids to ask for it ~before~ she was silenced? Write a note or send a message? Because the idea of having to mime for that is horrible yet distressingly funny to try to picture. That had to be one of the most morbid games of charades, ever.
I think a lot of what was written in the novel was either omitted or is edited in a way to sort of stay true. In the cold palace you see that A'rou is bloody and cut up but they left out in the book that Ruyi ordered her to be thrown in a sack with feral cats and whipped so that she would confess who the true culprit was (Ruyi likely suspected the Empress, Hui, and Jia). Since it's not from A'rou's point of view we only know that she committed suicide by hanging herself from a beam with a rope wearing a red dress and shoes so she could become a vengeful spirit. This could all be gossip or hearsay so it really can't be trusted. She likely killed herself so that the higher ups wouldn't force her to watch her entire family be slaughtered by the nine familial exterminations before executing her. She also might have been strangled and then hung to look like she committed suicide. Since we don't see what the maid brings we don't know but your idea of a macabre game charades made me giggle.
0:17 the emperor couldn’t touch her at the moment, because the royals still need Hui’s father to help the government with certain matters of the countries. It’s not that he protects her, it’s that he is prioritizing the country, that’s why when the dowager poisoned Hui, the emperor didn’t say or do anything (allowing this slow assassination)
He’s one of the best schemers in the palace. It was just really sad that he applied his schemes on Ruyi in the end. Imagine facing the most powerful man in the country who schemes and manipulates you by mentally torturing you. Ruyi suffered a lot 😢
The emperor know the guilt of the empress and yet he protects her. Such a hypocrite and foolish too.

I just noticed, after watching this clip sveral times before, that there are no footprints at all in the courtyard yet the servants are not covered in snow...
That is a life I would never want to live living in the palace is living in hell
Agreed. It's the same story in every country in every era. It just isn't worth it.

Is it just me, or did Ruyi do something to A’Rou’s hand too?
He protected Hui. If A ru was punished Hui should have been too.
Exactamente también Hui tuvo que ser castigada

Hui's family was involved in the govt so the emperor couldn't touch her yet
