Wow, and I just recently placed 4th on my LGS a few days ago, and I discovered this video. I placed 3rd and 4ths in my LGS tournaments with Bogles, beating the likes of Rakdos Scams, Izzet Murktides and Rhinos (by the skin of my teeth tho). I won't deny the mulligan problem, so I tried slotting in at least 2-3x Silhana Ledgewalkers. TBH, the only reason I'm even playing Bogles is for an excuse to play Light-Paws, so...Yeah. Really can't deny the big flaws. Best Bogles can be in is Pauper of all things.
I hope that Bogles will one day become THE cheap starter deck for modern again. It used to be easy to play for a total noob and a good way to learn what other decks do while having a decent chance to win. I don't want to take a friend to FNM and have to lend them some mind melting deck that I have to explain to them for an hour first before they can play - and which they themselves couldn't afford without saving for a few months first.
"Starter deck" maybe, but I don't think Bogles will become a viable tournament deck again, at least not with the game plan of hitting the opponent with a big beatstick, Modern is well on its way of becoming a turn 2 kill format.
Great topic for a video. I really like how you made the bigger point that the style of "Auras" decks has been pushed out of WotC's design philosophy. One nuance I would like to mention is that it seems WotC has dedicated aura design to a strictly limited sphere. We are seeing some strong auras being printed at common and uncommon rarity in newer sets that are playable in draft and sealed. I guess the future of auras will only exist in that space.
i kinda want to speculate its because aura's just dont support fun gameplay in a constructed enviroment. Either you slap them all on a dude that cant be interacted with and your opponent has to watch your creature go brrrr, or your opponent uses one of the answers to 5-for-1 you and instantly win. Equipment shows how this sort of "buff up your unit" style of card is done much better. They are more interactive for the opponent, since they can respond to the cast and the equip ability. Its more fun for you because if you get blown out, atleast the equip is still on the board.
Ah yes, the very interactive meta of embercleave... jokes aside, the "pure" aura deck with a single creature on the board is unlikely to come back with the amount of sacrifice effects that are now available, which also bypasses totem armor. But as standard has shown, wotc isn't limiting auras for limited, ossification and that +2/trample draw on death aura are two good examples of that. With the emergence of enchantment creatures you get a more consistent board presence than what classical bogle decks which means you need to mulligan much less because you have more viable openers than looking for 1 or 2 specific creatures. There's always going to be a tradeoff between power spike and consistency, assuming good card design in the first place, so "fixing" the bogle mulligan problem is only going to happen with a stronger card that does the same thing or with a different strategy, more reliable, but less explosive. But if you trade too much of that explosiveness, others will have time to setup their plan or deal with yours. tl;dr : Bogle having built in protection simply means he's going to remain relevant based on how strong attaching effects are in green and blue. Auras, Equips, counters, there's a bunch of ways to exploit bogle's hexproof and since he's a 1 drop, he's always going to be around as a great deck building check, sweeping anyone who cuts corners and can't deal with hexproof. Pro Tour material? unlikely given the wide card pool of modern, but still a sidedeck check even there. LGS champion? just as likely as any other competitive decks.
Love this style of video so glad I found your channel I'm starved for this type of mtg gameplay lore/history, again awesome video hope you make more like it!
Great overview of the deck! Surprised you didn't talk about its fall from grace in Pauper - while it still puts up the occasional 5-0 league and it's not in as dire a place as other formats, the rise of Tithing Blade decks and people putting in enchantment hate for Glitters Affinity has put a serious dampener on its effectiveness.
Thank you! For this video, I talked a lot based on my personal experiences with the deck which were in Modern, and because of that, I realized there was a lack of research into Pauper Bogles. I plan on doing more research for these in the future, especially since I will be talking about decks I did not personally play!
I think Bogles suffer major problems like other "powercrept out" deck(ie Tribal decks), which is Reddit/Twitter constant meming about it and down playing the deck without really playing the deck. Just accept your deck cant beat everything and have fun. You can be successful with any decks with good player skill and sideboard plan
This is an AMAZING series idea! If I may, could I request my favorite dead modern deck, Owling mine? It used to kill with Ebony Owl Netsuke and Fever Visions to do deal while filling up hands with boomerang and howling mine.
head mod of the bogles discord here, you have basically echoed everything I have been saying for the last few years. you will not be surprised to discover that the server is completely dead, only the pauper players are active now and even they are lesser in number than a year ago.
The reason why that bogle deck lost to Reid, beside the rng, is that he isn't running canopy cover and kor spiritdancer. Paw is great but doesn't get you lands, which are usually short in a low curve deck like Auras. The turn 3-4 bogle is a much different beast when you hit your land drops and have 7 mana for turn 3 and 4 instead of 4 because you're stuck on 2 lands. Paw is faster than kor due to the cheating of the aura, but I don't think cutting the most snowbally creature in the deck is a good move for a deck who's primary strategy is snowballing. Kor+Canopy is a lot more threatening than a bogle. Also, Ossification and Calix can recur a removal each turn. There's plenty of ways for the bogle decks to evolve and the best thing about them is that they are much cheaper than other meta decks while still packing pro tour level punches.
Fortunately Bogles still has a home in Pauper Unfortunately it's being powercrept out of that format thanks to the abundance of edict effects and cheap counter magic
I do think it’s interesting how so much of the issues of the deck are “too many sideboard cards accidentally destroy bogles”
it also doesn't help urza's saga exists and can find shadow spear which turns bogles off
Who keeps shadowspear outside of sideboard though?
Hammer time, and then in game two saga finds it for them
@@Garl_Vinland Hammer time and affinity

some of the Coolest decks are from a bygone era.
Soul Sisters
8-Rack
Infect
Merfolk
All practically nonexistent now.
Merfolk is actually solidly tier 2 and has decent matchups against several of the top decks now.
Martyr-Proc and U-Tron are both largely dead in Modern today, and that kinda bums me out.
10:50 if he put a lifelink aura or trample aura in his deck he would of won. This meta shit is counter intuitive to winning games.

Yes, I agree with that completely! We have these strong auras that are great...in limited lol

Essay Vids like this on MTG are some of my favorite content on this platform, excellent vid!
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I have to subscribe now. Keep up the great work.
Echoing this! Amazing video and I'm happy to hit the subscribe button, kudos to H Puzzle!
I think it's one of mtg's worst elements is the virtual unplayability's of auras.
Aura decks are really strong RN in standard

It boggles me to come across this pronunciation of bogles.
I've considered it to be correct ever since Benjamin Wheeler made me realize boggles is spelled boggles so why would bogles be pronounced boggles.
Boggling, given the card is clearly a Bogle@@MakeVarahHappen
Hmm I thought it was Boogles like what the ghosts say
@@jjs8426is that what the ghosts are saying these days
Incredible thumbnail, gonna give this a watch later

Came second in my first modern tournament using Bogles back in 2017, it was a different time back then.
I played Bogles during that time and Top 8d a Team Trios. 100% agree
awesome video! one of the first decks i loved was pauper bogles
This is an AMAZING series idea! If I may, could I request my favorite dead modern deck, Owling mine? It used to kill with Ebony Owl Netsuke and Fever Visions to do deal while filling up hands with boomerang and howling mine.
Dead in modern but still kickin in pauper. Go boggles!
Loved bogles! Would love to see more videos on older modern decks, like mono red prison (or blood moon in general)
So interesting! Thank you!!!
Solid video essay!
great vid and I adore the thumbnail
Incredible video!
I love this content, keep it up
Bogles is one of my favorite Pauper decks though
Interesting i wanna make rhis into a commander deck ajd just have layers of defence for a spell slinging commander.

Horizons sets delenda est. Justice for Bogles!
I got top 8 at my modern rcq in September last year playing GW Hexproof
Great video! would love to see more in this series
Instant sub. I need MOAR!!!! (whenever you're ready ofc :)
Bogles has gotten the beats in every format
I still love pioneer auras, I play it as a bant pile with Slip out the back.
this is some good shit mate, keep it up! 🙌
this is very good, you could also do these with old cards that were staples
well now i am sad. rip bogles

That showcase game was in pioneer. Neither of those cards are legal there seeing as they were only printed in OG zendikar block
@@TheRovingPunsterYou're right about the pioneer thing, disregard the mistaken intro sentence xD
Me who just bought the cards for bogles watching this

bogles still going strong in pauper!

Maybe cover Skred Red at some point?
Thank-you for not saying boggles.
Boggle is funnier, though

Please, do a video about turbo fog
you're onto something here, mtg is really lacking in this type of video
Do one for boomer Jund and the other classic modern decks pls.
Mulligan hell, auto-lose to EE and Chalice, yet 0 Bogle players go up to 2 mana for more Bogles that dodge these hate pieces.
with ssg banned the bogles player should always be able to get a one drop out before turn two chalice on one. you still make a good point about EE
I think you found your nieche with this one
I always loved bogles, people getting mad at decks should remind themselves to go touch some grass lol
Bog as in bog, not bow. Its even in one of the clips in the intro -_-
Had a coworker with the last name Bogle, he pronounced it the way it's being said throughout the video.
Bogles is easily one of the most boring decks to play as well.
Why does a hexproof creature need 0 mana totem armor? lmao
Hexproof is bad design; shroud and ward are much better-designed mechanics. That's all I have to say about Bogles.
Ring is a terrible card for modern, really wish that set never happened.
