I played DayZ like 10 years ago on cracked servers with a couple of friends every day after school and most of our time would be spent on running from town to town (Electro and Cherno if I remember correctly) to loot absolutely NOTHING and then we got into a fight with another group once a day if we were lucky. That is if climbing a ladder didn't randomly kill one of us.
It was truly an amazing experience
but at least back then you could find a fucking car

I got this game when it was in alpha, which doesn't say anything, but I got it in 2013. All it really needs is AI, more zombies, missions, bicycles, and a re-worked loot system so you get more civilian items for base building and vehicles

Honestly, the Workshop is the only reason this game is still going.
But the creator of the excellent Namalsk map, Sumrak, has been doing his damndest to get the game to a good point with the extremely limited budget and manpower he has of whats left of the DayZ skeleton crew.
It's not there yet, not by a long shot, but he's certainly steering it in the right direction.
Isn't this "game" like ten years in the making?
@@lasarousi It's been passed around like a hot potato (or a problem car) to different Creative Directors which all had different ideas for the game for those 10 years up until about ~3 or so years ago?
Right up until they shut down BI Slovakia down, which was the full-time studio working on DayZ and so we're left with Sumrak's janitorial closet crew in some dark boiler room in the Czech Republic
So to say that it's suffered from some AWFUL mismanagement is an understatement, once Dean left back in early 2014 it was pretty much every man for themselves

Man i remember playing this game when it came out on ps4, there were a lot of friendly people and it wasnt that caotic, made a lot of groups with ramdons. The last time i came back it was the same as in pc, KOS.

I feel like it would be way better if they just made it single player with ai bandits and streamlined a few things. most players act in the same way ai bandits would anyway and at least you're guaranteed to meet the bandits
The best part of DayZ is the random encounters you have with real players. If they made it just single player the majority of the player base would quit.

Everyone knows the tired out concept of humans being way more dangerous than the zombies in a zombie apocalypse.
But this game breaks that tradition by allowing the zombies to take 15 headshots, phase through six walls, slap you once and kill you, and *then* die.
I have over 1500 hours on dayz, and I can sum the game up with this:
It's bad
but comfy in a stockholm syndrome type of way

Bought this game for PC as soon as it was available because I enjoyed the mod so much. Zombies clipped through all objects including the terrain, there were no vehicles, servers had terrible lag. And it felt like this went on for months but I don't know because I quit and never played it again.
Exact same boat here. I recently saw it now has a good player population and was curious why so I tried it again. It's in a good state now. Found a server that plays very similar to OG Epoch and I'm back to spending countless hours on this damn game. Also deerisle is really freaking good.

bohemia cared so little about the game since the very beginning some of the developers call it their weekend project
The weirdest thing is in my 3k hours on this game i had more fun in pre release dayz than current one after 5 years of absence. This game is literally the definition of making a game so realistic its boring. The one point i do agree on is the ppl you meet and the gunfights i had on this game is some of the most memorable and enjoyable memories i had on this game despite its problems over the years. I have experienced both arma 2 dayz mod and I dayz standalone and even tho i can see the dedication to fixing and finishing the game somehow the mod felt more fleshed out than standalone is as of right now.
Man i'm so glad you made this video, most people say this game sucks but i'm glad you touched on it's better aspects, Raid Shadow Legends is such an underrated gem!

I’ve been playing FPS for 20+ years, and started playing DayZ in 2023 & have sunk 700+ hours into it. It’s by far the best multiplayer game I’ve ever played.
With that said, you have to know where to play. 95%~ of the servers are terrible, and the core player base really plays on those remaining 5% of servers that are actually great. If you’re a new player and don’t know this, you’re not going to have a great time.

As an avid Project Zomboid player I have to agree that this game’s carpentry is insanely over complicated.
In the short time I've played DayZ I've had a whole lotta adventures as a solo nomad
the past 340 days had shown that equating all Slavs to russians is an EXTREME insult to the Slavs.

I feel like interesting player encounters were much more frequent in the mod.
Like encountering clans, squads, psychos and of course friendlies. (Possibly because more people played it.)
I was hunted down out of revenge for killing a squad member, forced to be a servant, had a longstanding friendship until I was betrayed, some of these examples happend multiple times and the list goes on.

If they made a smaller map, added some semblance of NPCs with questing and streamlined the survival mechanics, the game would be so much more fun.
Some TH-camr made an apt comparison for development: DayZ is the unwanted stepchild that got left in the woods and keeps finding its way back home
It would be interesting to have AI zones. Bandits that attack on sight. Or rob you of gear.
Friendly zones with AI guards in full gears and kill on sight if weapons are fired in the vicinity.
Traders. And fetch quests. With a reputation system. It would be great having to get a certain weapon for a merchsnt or merc for ammo, or food, or such. Reputation with groups so you choose your alliances.
With either
PvE servers with PvP zones
And
Full PvP servers.
It would be great to kill time. But the game mainly in my experiance is

Loot
Survive
Die to some pansy with a sniper 2000 meters away
Repeat

My best experience with DAYZ was definitely the player interactions: shootouts, Friendly interactions, infighting after 2 hrs of playing with them, surviving with and befriending with friendly players. Idk this game has so much Potential but jesus christ its way to complicated and made me switch to Rust.

I have about 600 hours, and I have had one single good week-long life as a solo. And it made me love the game despite all of its flaws. I got to find, repair, and drive a car for the first time, using it as my mobile base. I got to 1v3 a group. I got to raid a base for the first time (found out after using all my ammo on the gate that you could just roll through one of the windows). And I got to betray a group…for like the 50th time…because I’m that guy lol
My friends and I were playing on a really popular server, had built up a base, had gotten pretty well stocked, discovered another small settlement and then almost immediately got into a back and forth war of raiding each other’s bases and stealing from each other. It was really fun
That “zomboid carpenter community” bit was too accurate, DayZs base building is odd as fuck

I got a gaming pc because of the dayz mod, over the summer of 2012 I poured easily 1k+ hrs in absolute eager excitement of the coming standalone
But something inside me was telling me, this game is and never be what it was chalked up to be
Almost 10 years later, I thank myself daily for the incredible amount of hours I saved by not playing what is essentially the true original early access perpetually unfinished survival game scam

its still buggy mess with missing features.
but i think devs got stuck with too old engine and too ambitious game.
saying that i still think that dayz is one of most unique survival adventures you can get in a game.
despite and in spite all the bugs and glitches, i can still have blast with it.
anyway, i think that they should abandon dayz and start on dayz 2 from scratch.

hardcore server , we where in a shoot out everybody on the server dies at the same time, only to be respawned naked in the same place by an hacker who was standing in the air with is arms up and spamming hand granades in to the crowd . Feel free to belive me or not but this was the first thing i remember in 633 hours on this piece of art . Also the swimming in the ground glicth which from my quick search is still replicable to this day .

Standalone is such a dissapointment. I've only had one memorable encounter and that was when my friend and some people he knew on the server all dressed up in UN gear and forced fresh spawns into a truck that we drove down the coastline (feeding them the meat of those who tried to escape). It eventually stopped when some of those people he knew staged an ambush on us. Meanwhile in the mod you have npc traders, proper base building, plethora of vehicles (like tank v tank pvp), npc missions, etc.
The Game is actually set in the czech Republic.
