hypo literally means low and tonic refers to solute so hypotonic means low conc. of solute or indirectly we can say that high conc. of water. we r referring to outside of cell because hypotonic environment. likewise hypertonic means high conc. of solute and low conc. if water outside the cell not inside. both terms refer to the outside of the cell.
