The winner took many off course short cuts to ensure the win. The course was designed with many twist and turns to make shortcuts easier for the local favorite. Olympic
Committee refused to give the gold medal to the true winner. A similar event occurred in the st.louis olympic marathon. However the gold medal was stripped from the cheater.

Actually that was more common than you might think. Greek runner Spyridon Louis, the winner of the 1896 marathon, also drank a glass of wine (according to others, it was cognac) during his winning effort.
